AMD now calls the feature FSR Upscaling within the FSR Redstone suite. Its current graphics-card documentation lists Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series cards for ML-based upscaling, while AMD’s Adrenalin release notes explicitly say the software does not support handheld gaming devices and directs owners to their device manufacturer for drivers. A handheld can therefore use FSR 4 only when its OEM documents the required GPU, driver, operating system, API and game path.
What “FSR 4” means in current AMD documentation
FSR 4 is the familiar name for AMD’s machine-learning upscaler. In current documentation it appears as FSR Upscaling, one component of the FSR Redstone suite. AMD says the rename separates upscaling from other Redstone technologies, including FSR Frame Generation, FSR Ray Regeneration and FSR Radiance Caching. Those features have different requirements, so a game or device supporting one does not automatically support the others.

The upscaler reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. On a handheld, that can reduce GPU workload and help a game target a higher output resolution, but the feature still depends on a supported graphics implementation, a compatible driver and an integration path in the game. It is not a universal switch that appears simply because a device uses an AMD processor.

Is FSR 4 officially supported on any handheld?
AMD’s current public material does not name a handheld as confirmed compatible. The key limitation is in the Adrenalin 25.6.1 release notes: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition does not include support for handheld gaming devices. Users should check with the OEM for device specific drivers.
That statement means the standard desktop Adrenalin package cannot be treated as a supported installation method for a handheld, even when the handheld’s processor contains a GPU from a series listed on AMD’s graphics page.

Consequently, “RX 7000 supported” and “this RX 7000-based handheld supports FSR 4” are not equivalent claims. A handheld manufacturer may ship a customized driver, expose a feature through its own software, or omit the necessary path altogether. Until the OEM documents it, compatibility is unconfirmed.
Hardware requirements AMD actually lists
AMD’s current FSR page identifies these desktop graphics families for ML-based FSR Upscaling:

The version numbers above are catalog conditions for AMD’s supported graphics software, not a guarantee that a handheld can install those packages. A handheld owner must verify the driver supplied for the exact model, because the OEM may package a different branch and expose different controls.

Most gaming handhelds combine CPU and GPU cores in one APU and use a vendor-specific driver package. Product names such as a Ryzen model, a “7000-series” label or a stated RDNA generation do not by themselves prove that the ML components, firmware, memory configuration and driver interface required by FSR Upscaling are available.

Check all of the following for the exact handheld model and operating-system image:
- GPU identification: the precise integrated GPU or APU model, not just the CPU family name.
- OEM driver support: a manufacturer statement that its handheld driver exposes FSR Upscaling or the relevant Redstone feature.
- Driver version: the version required by the OEM and, where applicable, the AMD catalog condition.
- Operating system: whether the documented path is available on the handheld’s installed Windows edition or another supported environment.
- API: whether the game runs through DirectX 12 when the driver-upgrade route requires it.
- Power and thermal limits: these affect whether a feature is practical, but AMD’s desktop performance claims cannot be used as handheld results.
Do not infer support from a dock, external display or eGPU. None of those changes the requirement for a documented driver and a game integration path for the device actually running the game.
Game requirements: native integration versus driver upgrade
The game is the second half of the compatibility check. AMD’s live Gaming Technologies Supported Games catalog lists titles that support one or more Redstone technologies and identifies the route used. A title appearing in the catalog is not automatically an FSR Upscaling title: it may support Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration, Radiance Caching or another combination.
Native FSR Upscaling integration
With native integration, the game developer has included the relevant FSR technology in the game. AMD says this option is enabled from the game’s graphics menu; some menus may still label it “FSR 4.” Look specifically for an upscaling option, not merely a general “FSR” label, and check the game’s feature notes for the supported mode.

AMD’s driver-upgrade route
AMD also documents a driver-upgrade route for ML-based upscaling. The game must have FSR 3.1 or newer using the standard integration described in the FSR SDK, and it must run through DirectX 12. In the catalog, titles marked with an asterisk have FSR 3.1 integration and require the driver-upgrade feature. This route is separate from a native FSR Upscaling implementation and cannot be assumed to work with a handheld’s OEM driver.
Frame Generation is a separate requirement
If you want driver-upgraded ML-based Frame Generation as well as upscaling, AMD specifies FSR Frame Generation 3.1.4 or newer, Windows 11 and DirectX 12. Those conditions apply to Frame Generation, not automatically to FSR Upscaling. A game can satisfy the upscaling path without satisfying the frame-generation path, or support one Redstone technology natively while lacking another.
How to check whether a particular game qualifies
- Open AMD’s current Gaming Technologies Supported Games catalog. Treat it as a live reference because entries and feature labels can change.
- Read the feature column. Confirm that the row names FSR Redstone Upscaling or the applicable ML-based upscaling feature, rather than only another Redstone technology.
- Identify the route. Determine whether the game has native integration or is marked for the driver-upgrade path.
- Check the game version and API. The driver-upgrade route requires FSR 3.1 or newer, standard integration and DirectX 12. Frame Generation adds the FSR Frame Generation 3.1.4, Windows 11 and DirectX 12 conditions.
- Match the game’s requirements to the handheld’s OEM driver. A desktop catalog entry is evidence about the game and AMD’s supported graphics software, not proof of handheld compatibility.
- Test the exact build after installing the OEM driver. Record whether the relevant menu option appears and whether the game remains stable at the handheld’s chosen power profile.
AMD announced more than 30 FSR 4 games at the feature’s 2025 launch. That was a launch-era count, not a current total and not a count of handheld-compatible games. Use the live catalog rather than that historical figure.

- Install the OEM driver. Download the graphics package supplied for the exact handheld model and operating system. Do not replace it with the desktop Adrenalin package if the OEM warns against doing so.
- Install or update the game. Confirm that its version includes the documented FSR 3.1-or-newer integration when using the driver-upgrade route.
- Close the game. AMD’s driver-upgrade instructions require changing the setting while the game is not running.
- Open the graphics control panel. In Adrenalin-supported environments, use Gaming > Graphics. On a handheld, the OEM may provide a different control panel or may not expose this switch.
- Enable AMD FSR Upscaling. If the device and driver support the feature, enable the upscaling toggle. Enable Frame Generation only when the game, OS, API and driver meet its separate requirements.
- Launch the game and open its graphics settings. Select the relevant FSR option in the game’s own menu. Native integrations are normally controlled here without a driver toggle.
- Verify the result. Confirm that the selected upscaler is active, then check image stability, latency, frame pacing and power draw at the handheld’s normal operating profile.
If the driver control is missing, do not force-install an unrelated desktop package. The missing control may indicate that the OEM has not implemented the feature, that the game does not meet the integration requirement, or that the handheld is outside AMD’s supported software path.

Does FSR 4 work on Steam Deck?
AMD’s cited documentation does not confirm FSR Upscaling support for Steam Deck. The device’s game-level upscaling options and any Linux compatibility layers are separate questions from AMD’s ML-based FSR Upscaling support. Without an OEM or platform statement identifying the required GPU and driver path, treat FSR 4 as unconfirmed.
Does it work on an ROG Ally or Legion Go?
The same rule applies: AMD does not name either product as a confirmed FSR 4 handheld in the material covered here. A processor marketed in an RX 7000-related class is not sufficient evidence. Check the manufacturer’s driver notes and the exact game route before claiming compatibility.

The Ryzen Z1 Extreme name alone cannot answer that question. You need the handheld model’s GPU identification, OEM driver support, operating system and the game’s native or driver-upgrade integration. AMD’s desktop RX-series list should not be converted into a guarantee for an APU-based handheld.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing any FSR option with FSR Upscaling. A menu entry for an older FSR version or another Redstone technology is not proof of ML-based FSR Upscaling.
- Using a desktop driver on a handheld. AMD explicitly directs handheld owners to the OEM because the standard Adrenalin package does not support handheld gaming devices.
- Reading the catalog as a universal game list. Check the feature column and route; a title may support only one Redstone technology.
- Ignoring DirectX 12. The driver-upgrade path requires DX12, and Frame Generation also requires Windows 11.
- Applying desktop benchmarks to handhelds. AMD’s published RX 9070 XT figures describe desktop hardware and are not handheld measurements.
- Assuming a future roadmap is current support. RX 6000 support is described as planned for 2027, not available now.
A practical compatibility checklist
Before spending money on a handheld, ask the manufacturer for a written answer to each item:
- Is the exact GPU or APU model in AMD’s current FSR Upscaling eligibility list?
- Does the OEM driver expose ML-based FSR Upscaling on this handheld?
- Which driver version and operating-system build are required?
- Does the target game have native FSR Upscaling, or does it use the driver-upgrade route?
- If using the driver route, does the game provide FSR 3.1-or-newer standard integration and DirectX 12?
- If using Frame Generation, does it meet FSR Frame Generation 3.1.4, Windows 11 and DirectX 12 requirements?
- Does the manufacturer document the feature for the exact model rather than for a related desktop GPU?
If any answer is unavailable, classify the device as not confirmed, not compatible. That distinction prevents a game-list entry or a processor name from being mistaken for an OEM-supported handheld feature.
Bottom line for buyers and players
To use FSR 4 on a handheld, you need three verified layers: an eligible GPU implementation, an OEM driver that actually supports the feature, and a game with the correct native or driver-upgrade integration. AMD currently lists RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards for FSR Upscaling, but its Adrenalin notes exclude handheld devices and defer to manufacturers. Until a handheld maker documents all three layers for a specific model, no handheld should be advertised or assumed to have confirmed FSR 4 support.
