Uninstalling a built-in Windows app does not have one universal result. If Windows shows an Uninstall command for that app, the app package is removed through the normal Windows route. If no such command appears, the component may be protected or otherwise unavailable for ordinary removal. A Microsoft Store app can generally be installed again from Store > Library, while organization-managed PCs may require an administrator to change policy and redeploy the app. Whether local files, preferences, or permissions remain is app-specific; Microsoft does not promise one result for every app.
“Built-in” does not mean “uninstallable”
Windows includes apps in several ways. Some arrive as Microsoft Store packages, some are traditional desktop programs, and some are components integrated into Windows itself. The word built-in describes how an app is supplied with the operating system, not whether you are allowed to remove it.

Microsoft Support explicitly warns that some apps and programs are built into Windows and cannot be uninstalled. The practical test is therefore the app’s current interface: open Start, find the app, right-click it, and look for Uninstall. You can also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s three-dot menu, and look for Uninstall. If Windows does not offer that command, the normal consumer removal path is unavailable for that installation.

What Windows actually does during an uninstall
When you select Uninstall, Windows removes the app package or program registered for that installation. For a Store app, this normally means removing the app’s installed package from your user environment and deleting the files that belong to that package. For a desktop program, the registered uninstaller controls what is removed.
That process is not the same as deleting Windows itself. An ordinary app uninstall does not reinstall Windows, roll back the operating system, or repair unrelated system files. It also does not guarantee that every trace of the app disappears. Microsoft notes that some unvirtualized resources are not cleaned up on uninstall. That statement applies to those particular resources; it is not a promise that all app data remains, nor proof that all app data is erased.
Because cleanup rules vary, check the app’s own documentation before removal if the app contains locally stored projects, downloaded media, offline databases, profiles, or other information that is not synchronized to an account. Cloud-synced content may return after a reinstall, but the reviewed Windows guidance does not establish a universal rule for any named app’s local files or settings.

Start menu method
- Open Start and choose All apps.
- Find the app you want to remove.
- Right-click the app and select Uninstall, if that command appears.
- Confirm the prompt and allow Windows to complete the removal.
If the command is absent, do not treat that as a failed click. It is Windows indicating that this app cannot be removed through the Start-menu route.
Settings method
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the app or scroll through the list.
- Select the app’s three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Accept any confirmation and wait for the app to disappear from the installed-app list.
Some apps do not expose an uninstall command in Settings even when other installed programs do. That is an availability limitation, not evidence that the app is merely hidden.

Control Panel for traditional programs
For a desktop program that does not provide a usable Settings entry, open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select the program, and choose Uninstall. This route applies to many conventional installers; it is not a general override for protected Windows components.
What you can do when Uninstall is missing
Do not substitute a different operation without understanding its purpose. Windows offers several controls that look similar but produce different results.
| Action | Where it appears | What it does | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall | Start, Settings, or Control Panel, depending on the app | Removes the app package or desktop program using its supported removal process | You no longer need the app and Windows exposes this command |
| Repair | Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Advanced options for some apps | Attempts to fix the installation without the full reset associated with removal | The app is installed but will not start or behaves incorrectly |
| Reset | Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Advanced options for some apps | Returns the app to a clean state according to that app’s reset behavior | Repair does not solve corruption and you accept possible loss of app-specific state |
| Store reinstall | Microsoft Store > Library | Downloads and installs a Store app again | The app was removed and remains available in the Store for your account and device |
| Windows Update recovery | Windows recovery settings | Reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings according to Microsoft’s recovery description | Windows itself needs repair; this is not a normal one-app reinstall |
Repair and Reset are not available for every app. If neither option appears, Windows has not exposed those controls for that installation.
How to reinstall a removed Microsoft Store app
For an app distributed through Microsoft Store, Microsoft’s documented recovery path is:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Find the app in the library list. Use the account that originally obtained the app if it is not visible.
- Select Install and wait for the download and installation to finish.
This route applies to Store apps that are still offered for your Windows version and account. It is not a guarantee that every Windows component removed from a particular build has a separate Store listing. A protected operating-system component may need Windows servicing or recovery rather than a Store download.

If installation fails, Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for Windows updates and Store updates. Where the app exposes them, try Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Advanced options > Repair or Reset. These are troubleshooting actions; they do not change an app that Windows has classified as non-removable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat happens to data, settings, and permissions?
There is no single Windows-wide answer. The official guidance reviewed for this topic does not specify what happens to every app’s local files, preferences, account data, or cloud content after uninstalling.
Microsoft’s permissions documentation says that some apps can use unvirtualized resources that are not cleaned up on uninstall. This is a narrow statement about certain resources. It should not be expanded into either of these unsupported promises:
- “Uninstalling always deletes all local data.”
- “Uninstalling always preserves settings and files.”
Before removal, identify what the particular app stores locally and what it synchronizes. Export projects, copy locally stored files, note important preferences, and verify that account-based data has synchronized if losing it would matter. After reinstalling, you may need to sign in again, re-enable permissions, or recreate settings even when the app’s cloud content is available.
Permissions are also app-specific. A reinstall can require fresh approval for location, camera, microphone, notifications, or file access. Existing permission records should not be treated as guaranteed to survive an uninstall/reinstall cycle.

Why a managed work or school PC may behave differently
Organization-managed Windows devices can receive app-removal rules from an administrator. Microsoft documents policy-based removal of selected preinstalled Microsoft Store apps for managed Windows 11 Enterprise and Education devices. The documented scenario uses Group Policy or mobile-device management, so it is not the consumer method for every PC and does not apply automatically to every Windows edition.
On a managed device, an administrator may remove an app even when an ordinary user cannot, or may prevent a user from removing or reinstalling it. The available behavior depends on the policy, management service, Windows edition, and applicable build. Microsoft’s policy page includes specific configuration and preview/build context; administrators should verify that the current documentation matches their deployment before changing a rule.
How an administrator restores a policy-removed app
- Clear the app from the policy’s removal selection in the organization’s Group Policy or MDM configuration.
- Synchronize the affected device so the updated policy reaches Windows.
- Reinstall the app from Microsoft Store, or redeploy it through the organization’s management tooling.
Those steps describe the policy-managed case. They do not override an app that is unavailable for the device’s edition or a component that Windows does not distribute separately.
When Windows recovery is appropriate
If the problem is broader than one missing app—for example, damaged Windows components or repeated servicing failures—Windows Update recovery can reinstall the current Windows version. Microsoft describes that process as repairing system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. It is a system-repair operation, not the standard way to put one uninstalled app back.
Use recovery only after confirming that the problem is Windows-wide and after making an independent backup of important data. A recovery reinstall has a much larger scope than Store Library installation or app-level Repair, so it should not be the first response to an app that simply needs to be downloaded again.

Common situations and the right next step
The app has an Uninstall command
Use Start or Settings, complete the confirmation, and then check whether the app’s data needs separate handling. If it was a Store app, look in Store Library if you later need it.
The app is listed but has no Uninstall command
Windows is not offering normal removal for that installation. Check whether Repair or Reset is available under Advanced options. If the app is required by work or school policy, contact the administrator rather than attempting unsupported removal.
The app vanished after an administrator policy change
The administrator must remove the app from the policy selection, synchronize the device, and reinstall or redeploy it. A consumer Store reinstall may be blocked until the policy is changed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The app is gone, but its files or settings remain
That outcome is possible because Microsoft does not define one cleanup rule for every app and notes that some unvirtualized resources are not cleaned up. Treat remaining data as app-specific; preserve or delete it only after identifying what it contains.
You are using Windows 10
The same Start, Settings, Store, and Control Panel distinctions generally apply, but Microsoft’s troubleshooting material states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Do not assume that an older Windows 10 procedure receives the same current servicing or Store support as Windows 11.
A safe decision checklist
- Confirm the exact app name and whether it is a Store app, desktop program, or Windows component.
- Check Start > All apps and Settings > Apps > Installed apps for a real Uninstall command.
- If it is a desktop program, check Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Back up locally stored work and verify synchronization before removal.
- Use Repair or Reset for app faults when those controls are available.
- Use Microsoft Store > Library > Install for a removed Store app that remains available.
- On a work or school device, ask the administrator whether Group Policy or MDM controls the app.
- Reserve Windows Update recovery for Windows-level repair, not routine app restoration.
The practical outcome
Uninstalling a built-in Windows app removes only what Windows permits that particular app installation to remove. Some preinstalled apps can be uninstalled from Start or Settings; some desktop programs use Control Panel; and some Windows components cannot be removed through normal user interfaces at all. Store apps are commonly recoverable through Store Library, while managed-device apps may require policy changes and redeployment. Because cleanup of data, settings, and permissions is not universal, check the app’s storage and synchronization behavior before you confirm removal.
