Uninstalling a sideloaded Android app removes the app package and the app-specific data stored on your phone. Android does not use a different uninstall rule just because the APK came from outside Google Play. Photos, downloads, documents, and other files saved in shared storage may remain, and uninstalling does not delete an account or information already uploaded to the app’s online service.
What “sideloaded” means
Sideloading means installing an Android app from somewhere other than the Google Play Store, such as an APK obtained from a website, a developer’s download page, an alternative app store, or another device. Google’s Android Ecosystem Security FAQs use “sideloaded” for an app loaded from an unknown source rather than through the Play Store app.

The installation source affects how the app arrived on the device, not the normal result of removing it. Once installed, Android manages the package, permissions, and local storage through the same operating-system mechanisms used for an app installed from Google Play. You normally uninstall it through the device’s app settings or app launcher.
Google warns that apps from unknown sources can put a device and personal information at risk. That warning concerns the trustworthiness of the software and its source; it does not mean Android keeps a sideloaded app after you select Uninstall.

What Android removes during an uninstall
Android separates storage that belongs to an app from storage intended to remain visible to the user or usable by other apps. When you uninstall, the first category is removed with the app.
| Item | Normal result of uninstalling | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Installed app package and executable code | Removed | The app is no longer installed or launchable. |
| App-specific files | Removed | Android deletes files kept in the app’s private or app-specific storage when that app is uninstalled. |
| App databases and internal settings | Removed with app-specific storage | These are normally part of the app’s private local data. |
| Private cache and temporary files | Removed | They are tied to the installed app rather than intended as independent user content. |
| Permissions granted to the app | No longer active for that installation | There is no installed package left to use those permissions. |
Android Developers specifically advises that app-specific storage should not hold anything a user expects to keep independently of the app, because those files are deleted on uninstall. This can include downloaded data that the app kept in its private directory, offline content, locally stored preferences, saved sessions, and an app database. The exact contents depend on how the developer designed the app.
Google’s Clear storage command is a related but different device-side action: it permanently deletes an app’s local data while leaving the app installed. Clearing storage can be useful for resetting an app, but it does not provide a way to preserve private app data through a later uninstall.

What may remain after the app is gone
Files placed in shared storage are treated differently. Shared storage is intended for user-visible content that can remain available to the person and, where permitted, to other apps. An app may write such files to common Pictures, Movies, Music, Documents, or Download locations, or to another user-accessible folder.

| Example | May remain? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Photos or videos exported to a gallery-visible folder | Yes | Open your gallery or file manager and back up or delete them as appropriate. |
| Documents or downloads saved in shared folders | Yes | Check Documents and Download locations before removal. |
| Files kept only in the app’s private directory | No, normally | Use the app’s export or backup function before uninstalling if the data matters. |
| Cloud copies or an online account | Not affected by local uninstall | Use the service’s own export, privacy, or account-deletion controls. |
“May remain” is deliberate: Android’s storage outcome depends on where the app wrote each file. A photo visible in your gallery is not proof that every file created by the app is in shared storage, and a file with an unfamiliar name is not necessarily disposable. If you need a record, copy important files to another device or a trusted backup location before uninstalling.
Uninstalling also cannot promise removal of files the app wrote outside its private storage. For example, an app could have created a user-visible export, a log, or a downloaded archive in shared storage. Review those locations yourself if complete local cleanup is important.
Before you uninstall: a short safety checklist
- Identify anything you need to keep. Look in the app for Export, Backup, Save, or Download controls. Do not assume an app supports a particular backup format unless its own documentation says so.
- Check user-visible folders. Inspect your gallery, Files app, Download folder, and any folder named for the app. Copy important items before removal.
- Record account details. If the app uses an online account, note the sign-in method and any information you may need to access the service later.
- Consider remote data separately. Uninstalling only changes this device. If you want an account or cloud records deleted, find the provider’s account and privacy controls while you can still sign in.
- Think about a potentially harmful app. If you installed an APK from an untrusted source, avoid opening it again just to inspect data. Preserve only files you recognize, then remove the app and review your device.
How to uninstall a sideloaded APK
Labels differ by Android version and phone manufacturer, but the process is usually the same.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, Apps & notifications, or the device’s equivalent app-management screen.
- Select See all apps if necessary, then choose the sideloaded app from the list. If you cannot find it, use the Settings search field and search for the app’s name.
- Tap Uninstall and confirm. Android may show a confirmation dialog explaining that the app and its data will be removed.
- Wait for the uninstall to finish, then return to the app list and verify that the package is no longer listed.
Many phones also offer an uninstall command from the app drawer: press and hold the app icon, choose App info or Uninstall, and confirm. The wording and location are manufacturer-specific. Google advises consulting the device maker when instructions for a customized Android version do not match what you see.

If Android offers only Disable, the app may be a preinstalled system component rather than an ordinary user-installed package, or your device may be managed by an organization. A normally sideloaded user app should generally expose an uninstall control unless a device-management policy prevents it.
What uninstalling does not do to accounts and cloud data
Local uninstall behavior covers the app software and storage on the phone. It does not prove that an account at the app provider has been closed, that a subscription has ended, or that data synchronized to a server has been erased.
Some apps keep notes, messages, profile information, backups, or device history online. Removing the app may stop this installation from accessing that information, but the provider can retain it under its own terms. To remove remote data, use the service’s in-app deletion command, account portal, privacy request process, or support channel. If you cannot sign in after uninstalling, reinstalling the app may be necessary to reach those controls; do so only if you trust the source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSimilarly, uninstalling cannot undo information that was already sent elsewhere while the app was installed. It stops the local package from running, but it is not a recall mechanism for data previously uploaded, copied, shared, or exported.

Play Protect and a suspicious sideloaded app
Google Play Protect scans apps installed from outside Google Play as well as Play Store apps. Depending on what it detects, Play Protect may warn you, disable an app, or remove an app it considers harmful. Those automated actions are separate from you choosing Uninstall; a warning or automatic removal does not tell you what files the app may have already saved in shared storage or what information it may have transmitted.
If you suspect an APK is malicious:
- Disconnect from networks temporarily if you are trying to limit further communication and can do so without creating another safety problem.
- Uninstall the app through Settings → Apps as soon as practical.
- Run the device’s available Play Protect scan and install Android and security updates offered by the phone.
- Review shared-storage folders for unfamiliar files, but do not open unknown executables or archives merely to inspect them.
- Change passwords for accounts the app could access, using a different trusted device when possible, and review account security activity.
- Check sensitive accounts for unexpected sessions, messages, purchases, or changes.
These steps reduce ongoing exposure, but no uninstall procedure can establish that every past action by a malicious app has been reversed. Account review and password changes address possible remote consequences that deleting the local package cannot.
Uninstall, clear storage, disable, and archive are different
| Action | App software | Local app data | Icon and permissions | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall | Removed | App-specific data removed | Installation and its permissions end | Remove the app from the device. |
| Clear storage | Kept | Permanently deleted | App remains installed and can request setup again | Reset a malfunctioning app without reinstalling it. |
| Disable | Usually kept but prevented from running | Not necessarily deleted | Depends on device and app type | Turn off a system or managed app when uninstall is unavailable. |
| Archive | Software, permissions, and temporary files removed | App data retained | Icon retained so the app can be restored | Free space while keeping local data for a later restore. |
Archive is therefore not a substitute for uninstall when your goal is to delete the app’s local data. Google’s archive guidance says that archive support and controls vary; some archive features require Android 15 or later and supported hardware. An archived app remains represented on the device, whereas an uninstalled app and its app-specific files do not.
If the app will not uninstall
The Uninstall button is missing
Open the app’s App info screen and check whether the package is marked as a device administrator, work-profile app, or managed application. An organization’s policy can restrict removal. Remove the management assignment only if you are authorized to do so; otherwise contact the administrator.
Best Value
Android says the app is active
Stop the app from its App info screen, close any foreground activity, and try uninstalling again. A restart can clear a temporary management or launcher glitch. Do not grant additional permissions simply to make removal possible.
You cannot find the app by its visible name
The label shown on the home screen may differ from the package name. Search Settings for recently installed apps, sort the app list by install date if that option exists, and inspect unfamiliar entries. If you are unsure which package belongs to the APK, avoid deleting unrelated system components and verify the developer or package details first.
The icon disappeared but storage is still used
Check Settings’ storage and app list rather than relying on the launcher. The app may have been archived, disabled, or removed while shared-storage files remain. Review user-visible folders separately; uninstalling does not automatically sweep them.

For a sideloaded app, complete local removal means the installed package and its app-specific storage are gone. It does not automatically include user-visible files, cloud backups, provider-held account records, or information that left the phone before uninstall. Treat those as separate cleanup decisions, and back up anything valuable before confirming removal.
