Apple’s documented deletion is specific: the model files used for on-device Apple Intelligence are removed. Apple does not say that this switch erases every summary, generated item, piece of app data, or third-party account record created while the feature was enabled.
The privacy behavior of a separate service also matters. Apple says Private Cloud Compute processes only data relevant to a request, does not store or expose that data to Apple, and removes it after processing. That describes the lifetime of a cloud request; it is not a promise that switching off Apple Intelligence retroactively deletes content saved elsewhere.

What the Apple Intelligence switch actually removes
On a supported iPhone, iPad, or Mac, the main Apple Intelligence control governs the feature as a whole. Apple’s support documentation states that when you turn it off, “the on-device models will be removed from your device.” Those downloaded models are the local software components that allow many Apple Intelligence tasks to run without sending a request away from the device.

What is not confirmed to be deleted
Turning off the feature should not be treated as a device-wide “erase my Apple Intelligence data” command. The cited Apple documentation does not state that the switch automatically removes:
- Summaries or rewrites already saved in Mail, Messages, Notes, or another app.
- Images, Genmoji, or other outputs that you chose to keep in Photos, Files, or an app.
- Original content that Apple Intelligence read as context while helping you complete a task.
- Normal app databases, iCloud data, backups, or device logs that are managed by those products rather than by the Apple Intelligence switch.
- Records held by an optional third-party service used through an Apple Intelligence experience.
If your objective is to remove a particular result, delete it in the app where it is stored. For example, removing a generated image from Photos is an ordinary Photos deletion task; disabling Apple Intelligence is a separate settings action. Whether an item is synchronized or retained in a backup depends on that app’s and account’s own controls.

iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Tap the control next to Apple Intelligence to switch it off.
- Read the confirmation prompt, if one appears, and confirm.
After the setting changes, Apple Intelligence features that require the master service are unavailable on that iPhone, and the downloaded on-device models are removed. The exact confirmation wording can differ by iOS version.

iPad
- Open the Settings app.
- Select Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Use the Apple Intelligence control to turn the feature off and confirm.
Apple documents the corresponding control for iPadOS, but labels and placement can vary between releases. If you do not see the menu, check that the iPad is running a supported release and language and that the model meets Apple’s requirements.
Mac
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
- Select Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Turn off the Apple Intelligence setting and accept the confirmation.
System Settings may present the control in a slightly different location after a major macOS update. Use the System Settings search field for “Apple Intelligence” if the section is not immediately visible.
How much storage comes back?
Apple lists a 7 GB device-storage requirement for Apple Intelligence on supported devices other than Apple Watch. That figure is a requirement for having the feature installed; it is not a guaranteed amount of space reclaimed when you disable it. Apple’s cited instructions do not quantify the exact size of the model files removed from a particular device, operating-system build, language configuration, or region.

To check the result on an iPhone or iPad, open Settings → General → iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage) and allow the storage categories to recalculate. On a Mac, open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Storage. A change may not appear immediately, and the displayed free-space difference can be affected by caches, indexing, temporary files, and other system activity. Do not use the 7 GB requirement as a promise that exactly 7 GB will be returned.

Apple’s current availability and storage information is on How to get Apple Intelligence. The page lists supported device families, but eligibility and feature availability can change by release, language, and country.
What happens to requests processed by Private Cloud Compute?
Many Apple Intelligence tasks are processed on-device. For more complex requests, Apple may use Private Cloud Compute, which runs the relevant processing on Apple silicon servers. Apple’s privacy guide says that only data relevant to fulfilling the request is sent for processing, that Apple cannot access or store it, and that the data is removed after the request is completed.
Those statements describe Private Cloud Compute’s designed request lifecycle. They do not mean that every piece of information on your device is uploaded, nor do they establish that a setting change can erase material that an app or account saved before the request. They also do not turn the Apple Intelligence switch into a deletion control for iCloud, Mail, Messages, Photos, or other services.

Apple Intelligence Report: useful evidence, not an eraser
iPhone users can inspect recent Private Cloud Compute activity with Apple Intelligence Report. To open it, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Apple Intelligence Report. Choose either Last 15 Minutes or Last 7 Days, then export the report if you need a copy.
The report records requests for the selected period. Apple notes that it can be empty when no Private Cloud Compute requests occurred during that interval. An empty report therefore means “no requests shown for this period,” not “all Apple Intelligence information has been deleted.”
The report has its own enable/disable preference. Turning off reporting does not remove the downloaded models, disable Apple Intelligence, or confirm deletion of request data. Conversely, leaving the report enabled does not keep the on-device models installed after you turn off the main feature.

Individual feature controls are different from the master switch
Apple provides controls for selected functions without requiring you to disable the entire Apple Intelligence system. Depending on platform and operating-system version, you may find settings for:
- Messages summaries.
- Mail summaries.
- Notification summaries.
- Priority notifications and related prioritization features.
These controls let you reduce a particular behavior while leaving other Apple Intelligence capabilities available. They are preference controls, not cleanup tools: turning off Mail summaries, for example, does not necessarily remove a summary that has already been displayed or saved by Mail. The available list and exact labels can change by release.

What about ChatGPT requests and history?
Apple identifies ChatGPT as an optional integration available in Apple Intelligence experiences such as Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground. A request can therefore involve a service outside Apple’s on-device models and Private Cloud Compute, depending on how you use the integration and which permissions you grant.
The Apple support material cited here does not specify what happens to previous requests stored under a ChatGPT account when Apple Intelligence is disabled. It does not establish that switching off Apple Intelligence deletes that account history, nor does it establish a particular retention period. If you need those records removed, review the controls and retention terms in the relevant ChatGPT account separately; do not assume the Apple setting performs that deletion.
Disabling the Apple feature prevents future Apple Intelligence access through the disabled device, but it is not evidence that a third-party account has been closed, cleared, or disconnected everywhere. The integration details are described in Apple’s Apple Intelligence support guide.
A practical before-and-after checklist
Before switching it off
- Save any draft, rewritten text, image, or summary you still need in the appropriate app.
- Identify items you want removed from Mail, Messages, Notes, Photos, Files, or another app and delete them there.
- If you need an audit trail, open Apple Intelligence Report and export the relevant 15-minute or seven-day period before changing settings.
- Decide whether you only want to suppress a feature such as notification or Mail summaries; an individual control may meet that goal without removing local models.
- If you used ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence, check that account’s own history and privacy controls.
After switching it off
- Confirm that the Apple Intelligence control is off in Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri (or the corresponding iPad or Mac menu).
- Expect Apple Intelligence functions that depend on the master switch to stop being available on that device.
- Check device storage only if reclaiming space is important, and allow the system time to recalculate.
- Delete retained outputs from the apps or accounts that contain them; the master switch does not document that work for you.
- Keep the Apple Intelligence Report’s role separate from deletion: it shows request activity for a selected window and is not a deletion receipt.

The clear answer
If you turn off Apple Intelligence, Apple documents removal of the downloaded on-device models from that device. That is the precise, supported deletion claim. Everything else requires a separate check: delete saved results in their apps, manage backups and synchronized data through their own controls, review the Apple Intelligence Report independently, and handle any ChatGPT account history through that service’s settings. Private Cloud Compute has a separate Apple-described lifecycle in which request-relevant data is removed after processing, but that privacy statement should not be expanded into a promise of device-wide or retroactive erasure.
