In return, the game awards Candy and frees one storage space, but Niantic says the Pokémon cannot be recovered. Review every selection before confirming; sending a Pokémon to Pokémon HOME or to a Nintendo Switch is a different process with different consequences.
What a normal transfer does
The in-game Transfer command sends the selected Pokémon to Professor Willow. Once confirmed, that Pokémon leaves your collection permanently. There is no undo command, restore folder, or way to retrieve it later. Niantic’s Help Center puts the trade-off plainly: “You’ll receive Candy in exchange for transferring a Pokémon, but be careful: you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.”

The immediate benefits are therefore limited to two things:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Candy: the game awards Candy for the transferred Pokémon. The official guidance does not state a universal amount, so the amount should not be assumed to be constant for every transfer.
- Storage space: removing the Pokémon creates room in your Pokémon storage.
Transfer is not trading. A trade sends a Pokémon to another Trainer who is physically with you, and Niantic says the traded Pokémon’s CP, HP, and other statistics can change. A transfer to Professor Willow does not place the Pokémon in another player’s account.

How to transfer one Pokémon to Professor Willow
Niantic’s current Help Center path starts from the map. Labels can change as the app is updated, so use the confirmation text shown by your version of Pokémon GO.
- From Map View, open the Main Menu.
- Tap Pokémon to open your storage.
- Select the Pokémon you want to remove.
- Open that Pokémon’s menu and choose Transfer.
- Read the warning and confirm only if you are certain that you no longer need the Pokémon.
The confirmation is the point of no return. If the Pokémon is rare, has a useful move set, has sentimental value, or is being saved for a future task, cancel the dialog and keep it instead.
How a batch transfer works
For ordinary eligible Pokémon, you can select several at once rather than opening each individual profile.
Recommended Free Tools
- In the Pokémon list, press and hold one Pokémon until selection mode begins.
- Tap each additional eligible Pokémon you want to include.
- Tap Transfer and inspect the batch confirmation.
- Confirm only after checking the complete selection.
Batch transfer has stricter safeguards than transferring a single Pokémon. Multiple Shiny Pokémon, Lucky Pokémon, or Pokémon whose Buddy status is Good Buddy or higher cannot be included in one batch. To select multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, first enable the relevant option in the app’s settings. Some Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, including Mew and Celebi, cannot be selected for this kind of transfer.
These limits apply to the batch operation, not to a promise that every individual Pokémon can always be removed. If a selection behaves differently from the ordinary list, open the Pokémon’s profile and check its status before assuming the app is malfunctioning. The game may allow an individual action while still preventing a multi-select action for safety.
Why the Transfer button may be unavailable
Several statuses deliberately block a transfer. Check the Pokémon’s current state if the command is missing or selection mode will not include it:
- It is your active Buddy.
- You marked it as a favorite.
- It is currently defending a Gym.
These protections are designed to prevent common accidental deletions. Make the Pokémon eligible in the app first, then reopen the list and verify that the intended Pokémon—not a similarly named or nearby entry—is selected. A blocked status is different from a Pokémon that is simply excluded from a bulk selection because it is Shiny, Lucky, a high-level Buddy, Legendary, or Mythical.

Does transferring give you Candy?
Yes. Niantic describes Candy as the exchange for sending a Pokémon to Professor Willow. That statement confirms the reward but does not promise a fixed number for every species, appraisal, or transfer method. Do not rely on an assumed “one transfer equals a set amount” rule unless the game itself displays the amount in your current version.
The other guaranteed result is a freed storage slot. Transfer is consequently useful when storage is full, but the space comes at the cost of losing that exact Pokémon forever. Candy and storage are benefits of the Willow action; they are not evidence that a transferred Pokémon can be restored.
The Candy belongs to the relevant Pokémon’s Candy family, as shown by the game’s reward screen. Because Niantic’s published guidance does not state a universal quantity, the confirmation and reward screens in your current app are the authoritative place to check what was awarded. A transfer is not a way to preserve appraisal data, moves, a costume, or a special form elsewhere in GO.
Three different ways a Pokémon can leave Pokémon GO
Players often use “transfer” to describe several unrelated actions. The destination determines what happens next.
| Action | Where the Pokémon goes | Can it return to Pokémon GO? | What you receive or need to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer to Professor Willow | It is removed from Pokémon GO. | No. The removal is permanent. | Storage space and Candy; no universal Candy amount is stated by Niantic’s guidance. |
| Send to Pokémon HOME | The linked Pokémon HOME account, after the transfer is accepted there. | No. | Requires linked accounts and GO Transporter Energy. Eligibility, status, and form rules apply. |
| Send through the Pokémon: Let’s Go connection | The GO Park complex in the connected Nintendo Switch game. | No. | The supported workflow awards Candy and XP; the first send grants a Mystery Box. |
Only the first row is the everyday storage-management command inside Pokémon GO. The other two are destination transfers and should not be used as a way to back up a Pokémon before deleting it in GO.
The rewards also differ. Professor Willow’s action is documented as Candy plus storage space. The Switch workflow specifically adds XP and a first-send Mystery Box, while HOME uses Transporter Energy rather than functioning as a Candy exchange inside GO. Treat the destination screen and its warning as the source of truth before you approve any move.
What happens when you send a Pokémon to Pokémon HOME?
Pokémon HOME is a separate destination, not a recovery service for Pokémon GO. Niantic requires a linked Pokémon GO and Pokémon HOME account, and the send consumes GO Transporter Energy. After sending, the Pokémon cannot return to Pokémon GO. You must receive it in Pokémon HOME before it appears in the HOME Boxes.

Not every Pokémon is eligible. Niantic also warns that some information does not survive the move: Lucky and Purified statuses are lost, and a Pokémon’s form may change. Check the eligibility and confirmation screens before spending Transporter Energy, particularly when the Pokémon has a special form or status that matters to you.
Niantic’s official Help Center states the direction clearly: “you cannot send Pokémon from Pokémon HOME to Pokémon GO.” HOME therefore provides a one-way path out of GO, not two-way storage between the services. Sending a Pokémon to HOME should never be confused with transferring it to Willow for Candy; it is an account-linked move whose result must be accepted in the HOME app.
What happens when you send a Pokémon to Pokémon: Let’s Go?
The supported Nintendo Switch workflow moves eligible Pokémon from GO into the GO Park area of a connected Pokémon: Let’s Go game. This is separate from both Professor Willow’s transfer command and the Pokémon HOME connection.
The Switch route awards Candy and XP. The first time you send a Pokémon through this workflow, it also triggers a Mystery Box. Once sent, the Pokémon cannot be transferred back to Pokémon GO, so confirm that the destination game and the selected Pokémon are correct before proceeding.
This route therefore makes sense only when your goal is to use the Pokémon in the connected Let’s Go game. It does not create a duplicate in GO, and it does not protect the Pokémon from the one-way nature of the move. Verify the connected game, the GO Park destination, and the selected Pokémon before accepting the send.
A safe decision process before you confirm
Use this short check whenever you are clearing storage or selecting a batch:
- Identify the destination. Decide whether you mean Professor Willow, Pokémon HOME, or the Pokémon: Let’s Go GO Park. The buttons and consequences are not interchangeable.
- Check the individual. Open its details and verify the name, species, form, appraisal, moves, and any personal reason you may want to keep it.
- Look for protected statuses. Confirm that it is not your active Buddy, a favorite, or a Gym defender. For a batch, check for Shiny, Lucky, Good Buddy-or-higher, Legendary, and Mythical restrictions.
- Review the final selection. In selection mode, scroll through the highlighted entries. Similar names, costumes, and forms are easy to confuse.
- Read the warning. Cancel if the confirmation does not describe the destination or result you intended.
This process is especially important for bulk actions because one confirmation can remove every selected Pokémon at once.

When storage pressure is the reason for the cleanup, sort and inspect before selecting. Remove only entries you can identify confidently, and handle unusual forms or statuses individually rather than assuming a batch rule. If the app blocks an entry, respect the safeguard and resolve the Buddy, favorite, or Gym status instead of trying to work around it.

“I expected the Pokémon to remain somewhere in GO.”
A Professor Willow transfer is deletion from your GO collection, not an archive. There is no recovery route after confirmation. HOME and Switch sends also move the Pokémon away from GO and do not provide a return path.

That behavior is a safeguard, not necessarily an error. Multiple Shiny, Lucky, or Good Buddy-and-above Pokémon are blocked from one batch. Multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon require the setting that permits such selection, and certain species such as Mew and Celebi remain unavailable for selection.
“The Pokémon is missing from my selection list.”
Check whether it is currently your Buddy, marked as a favorite, or defending a Gym. Those states prevent transfer until the Pokémon is no longer in the protected state.
“My HOME Pokémon is not visible in the Boxes.”
For a HOME send, the Pokémon must first be received in Pokémon HOME. Sending from GO alone does not make it appear in the HOME Boxes.
“Can I send it to HOME first and bring it back if I change my mind?”
No. HOME is one-way from GO for this workflow, and Niantic also states that Pokémon cannot be sent from HOME to GO. Check the linked account, eligibility, Transporter Energy, status loss, and form warning before sending.

“Does a Switch send work like a Willow transfer?”
No. A Switch send places an eligible Pokémon in the Let’s Go GO Park, awards Candy and XP, and grants a Mystery Box the first time. It is a separate destination workflow, and the Pokémon cannot return to GO.

Frequently asked questions
Can I undo a Pokémon GO transfer?
No. Once a Pokémon is transferred to Professor Willow, Niantic says it cannot be recovered.
How much Candy do I get?
You receive Candy, but Niantic’s Help Center does not state one universal amount for every transfer. Check the reward shown by your current game version.
Why can’t I transfer my active Buddy?
Active Buddy Pokémon are protected from transfer. Change the Buddy status first, then check the Pokémon list again.
Can I bulk-transfer Shiny or Lucky Pokémon?
Multiple Shiny or Lucky Pokémon cannot be transferred in one batch. Review and handle any eligible individual action separately if the game permits it.
Can I bulk-transfer Legendary or Mythical Pokémon?
You must enable the relevant setting to select multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon. Some species, including Mew and Celebi, cannot be selected for this kind of transfer.
The practical answer
If you choose Transfer in Pokémon GO, the Pokémon is gone from your storage permanently, and you receive Candy plus the storage space it occupied. Use that command only for Pokémon you are prepared to lose. If your intention is to move a Pokémon to another game, use the dedicated HOME or Pokémon: Let’s Go workflow instead, and check its one-way restrictions, eligibility rules, and possible status or form changes before confirming.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens when you transfer a Pokémon to Professor Willow?
It is permanently removed from Pokémon GO. You receive Candy and free one Pokémon storage space, but the Pokémon cannot be recovered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan a transferred Pokémon come back from Pokémon HOME?
No. Pokémon sent from GO to HOME cannot return to Pokémon GO, and they must be received in HOME before appearing in the HOME Boxes.
What should I check before a bulk transfer?
Review the entire highlighted selection, then check for active Buddy, favorite, Gym-defender, Shiny, Lucky, Good Buddy-or-higher, Legendary, and Mythical restrictions.
The Bottom Line
Professor Willow transfers are permanent deletions that reward Candy and storage space. Pokémon HOME and Pokémon: Let’s Go sends are separate one-way moves with their own eligibility rules, so confirm the destination and every selected Pokémon before tapping the final button.
