In the United States, a sale for dollars generally also creates a capital gain or loss to calculate and report. A sale inside an exchange account is not the same thing as sending Bitcoin over the blockchain: an on-chain transfer is a separate step, with its own possible fee and confirmation wait.
What happens to your Bitcoin when you sell?
In a custodial exchange account, the platform executes your sell order and updates your account balance. Depending on the platform and the order, it may match buyers and sellers or use another execution method. The Bitcoin sale can credit a fiat balance without you broadcasting an on-chain Bitcoin transaction.

Afterward, you can leave the proceeds in the account or request a payout using an available method. A payout to a bank or other destination is a separate step from the trade, and its availability, charges, and timing depend on the platform, payment method, and location.

Exchange sale versus an on-chain transfer
| Action | What happens | Possible cost or delay |
|---|---|---|
| Sell Bitcoin held in an exchange account | The platform executes the trade and credits a fiat balance or starts a payout. A blockchain transaction is not necessarily part of this sale. | Trading charges or spread may apply; a later cash-out may have separate charges and timing. |
| Send Bitcoin to an external wallet | Bitcoin is transferred on-chain to another address. This is separate from selling; if you sell afterward, the sale is another action. | A network fee may apply, and the transaction may wait for confirmation. |
Moving Bitcoin between wallets or accounts you control should not be confused with selling it. Whether a particular transfer has tax consequences depends on the facts and applicable rules, but a transfer by itself is not the same event as a sale for dollars.
How long does it take to receive the money?
There are two different timing questions: how quickly the trade executes and how quickly the proceeds become available through a payout. A platform may execute a trade and credit an account balance before any bank transfer occurs. Payout timing depends on the chosen method and platform; there is no universal deadline that applies to every sale.

Blockchain confirmation applies if Bitcoin is transferred on-chain, not to a fiat payout from an exchange. Bitcoin.org says blocks are added about every ten minutes on average, but that is not a promise that a particular transaction will confirm within ten minutes. Transactions compete for limited block space; a transaction with a lower fee may wait in the mempool. Bitcoin.org explains that network fees depend on transaction size rather than the amount of Bitcoin sent, and can affect confirmation priority. Bitcoin.org transaction fees Bitcoin.org FAQ

What fees can come out of a Bitcoin sale?
Check the order preview and, separately, the cash-out screen. A platform may include an explicit trading charge, a spread between the quoted price and a market reference, or both. Payout methods can also carry their own charges. The amount and available methods vary by platform, location, account, and transaction, so a fee quoted for one sale should not be treated as a universal rate.
If you send Bitcoin off-platform, the network charge is a separate possible cost. Coinbase says it estimates off-platform network charges using prevailing fees and shows the amount at transaction time; batching and network congestion can cause the estimate to differ from the final network cost. Do you owe tax when you sell Bitcoin?
For U.S. federal tax purposes, generally yes: selling digital assets for U.S. dollars results in a capital gain or loss, subject to the rules and limitations that apply to your situation. The IRS treats digital assets as property. Its FAQ 49 says: “If you sell digital assets for U.S. dollars or similar currency, you must recognize any capital gain or loss on the sale subject to any limitations on the deductibility of capital losses.” IRS FAQs on digital asset transactions
The basic calculation compares your adjusted basis with the amount realized from the sale. The IRS describes amount realized as cash received plus the fair market value of services received to effect the sale, reduced by digital-asset transaction costs allocable to the disposition. Transaction or “gas” fees, transfer taxes, and commissions can qualify as transaction costs. Costs to move assets between your own wallets or accounts are not automatically costs of a sale or disposition.

A simple calculation example
Suppose, purely for illustration, you paid $20,000 for Bitcoin and later sold it for $27,000, with $100 in qualifying costs allocable to that sale. If your adjusted basis is $20,000, the amount realized after those costs is $26,900, making the gain $6,900 before considering any other facts or applicable tax rules. This example does not determine your tax bill.
Short-term and long-term holding periods
The IRS says a sale after holding digital assets for one year or less generally produces short-term capital gain or loss; a holding period longer than one year generally produces long-term treatment. The holding period begins the day after acquisition and ends on the sale or exchange date. The applicable tax treatment and any resulting liability depend on your full circumstances, so this distinction alone does not establish a tax rate.
What records should you keep?
Keep records that let you identify each acquisition and disposition, calculate basis and proceeds, and support the costs you allocate to a sale. The IRS’s digital-asset FAQs describe specific-unit identification and recordkeeping. Its virtual-currency FAQ says the basis for a cash purchase includes the amount spent plus fees, commissions, and other acquisition costs. Check the current IRS instructions for the relevant tax year and your facts. IRS FAQs on virtual currency transactions

- Fair market value and adjusted basis at acquisition, including eligible acquisition costs.
- Sale or disposition date and time, the units sold, and their fair market value.
- Cash or other property received, plus transaction costs allocable to the disposition.
- Records supporting which specific units you sold if you identify units individually.
For individuals, capital transactions are generally calculated on Form 8949 and summarized on Schedule D, subject to IRS instructions and stated exceptions. IRS guidance describes an exception where a broker provides Form 1099-DA with gross proceeds and basis information. Broker reporting is information reporting; it does not create the underlying tax obligation. Reconcile any broker form with your own acquisition and disposition records rather than assuming it contains every detail needed for your calculation. Do the same tax rules apply outside the United States?
No single country’s treatment should be assumed to apply everywhere. The tax discussion above concerns U.S. federal rules. In the United Kingdom, HMRC says a person may need to pay Capital Gains Tax when they make a gain by selling, exchanging, or giving away cryptoasset tokens. That is an example of jurisdictional variation, not a complete comparison of UK and U.S. tax law. Consult the tax authority or a qualified adviser for the jurisdiction and tax year that apply to you.
