No notification is sent when you screenshot a normal Instagram feed post. The same is generally true for Stories, Reels, profile pages, and ordinary direct messages. The important exception is temporary media in Direct Messages—such as view-once, disappearing, allow-replay, or vanish-mode content—which can reveal that you took a screenshot or screen recording.
The short answer
Instagram treats ordinary posts as non-alerting content. If you save a screenshot of a public or private feed post, the account that published it does not receive a screenshot notification. Instagram also generally keeps screenshots of Stories, Reels, profile pages, and standard chat messages silent.

Temporary media in a Direct Message works differently. A photo or video sent as view-once, disappearing, allow-replay, or vanish-mode content can trigger an alert or a screenshot indicator. Treat that material as screenshot-visible.

This distinction is more useful than thinking of Instagram as having one universal screenshot rule: ordinary, persistent content is usually silent; temporary private content is the exception.

Does Instagram notify someone when you screenshot a post?
Normal feed posts
No. A screenshot of a photo, carousel, caption, or video in the regular feed is not reported to the account that posted it. This applies whether the post is from a public account or an account you follow privately. Instagram may still record ordinary engagement such as a like, comment, share, or save, but a screenshot itself is not presented as an interaction to the poster.
Shared posts and embedded content
When a post appears in your feed because someone shared it, the screenshot rule follows the underlying post surface. Capturing that feed item does not create a screenshot alert. The person who originally published it and the person who shared it do not receive a screenshot notice.
What about Stories?
A Story screenshot is generally silent. The account owner can see that you opened the Story through Instagram’s normal viewer information, but current guides do not report a separate alert saying that you captured the screen.
Do not confuse a view with a screenshot. Opening a Story can place your account in the viewer list; taking a screenshot is a separate event. Someone may therefore know you viewed the Story without knowing that you saved an image of it.

Story behavior is software behavior, not a permanent promise. Instagram can change it in an app update, and features can be tested for limited groups. If a particular Story contains sensitive information, assume the owner could know you viewed it even though a screenshot alert is not currently expected.
Reels, profiles, and profile photos
Reels
Reels follow the ordinary-content rule in current guides: screenshotting a Reel does not notify the creator. Screen-recording a Reel is likewise generally silent. The creator can see normal metrics and interactions supplied by Instagram, not a named list of people who captured the video.
Profiles and profile pictures
Capturing a profile page or profile photo does not generate a screenshot notification in the cited current guidance. The account owner may still see a visit only where Instagram exposes that information through a separate feature; a screenshot does not add a special alert.
Instagram Direct Messages: where the rule changes
Ordinary conversations
Text messages and persistent photos or videos in a normal DM thread are generally not screenshot-alerting. A screenshot of the conversation does not ordinarily produce a banner, push notification, or status message for the other participant.

Instagram can detect screenshots and recordings of media sent with temporary viewing controls. Depending on the mode, the sender may see an alert or a screenshot status. This includes view-once media, disappearing media, and media that permits only a replay. If the sender used a temporary option, assume a capture can be visible.

Vanish mode
Vanish mode is designed for messages that disappear after they are viewed or when the chat is closed. Current documentation and a 2022 U.S. Department of Justice description of disappearing-message status both describe a status that can indicate a screenshot. In practical terms, do not treat vanish-mode messages like a normal chat: a capture can be disclosed inside the conversation.
Screen recording is not a reliable workaround
For temporary DM media, recording the display instead of pressing the screenshot buttons is not a safe way to remain unnoticed. Instagram can detect a screen recording in the same privacy-sensitive modes. Detection details can vary by operating system and app version, so the safest assumption is that temporary media may expose either kind of capture.
Why you may hear conflicting answers
- Old behavior: Instagram has experimented with screenshot alerts before. A guide written during an experiment can remain online after the feature is withdrawn.
- Different content modes: Advice about vanish mode is often repeated as if it applies to every post, while advice about feed posts ignores temporary DMs.
- App versions and tests: Instagram can roll out or remove behavior gradually. Two accounts on different versions may not see identical interface indicators.
- Screenshot versus view: Story viewer information is an ordinary viewing record, not proof that a screenshot alert was sent.
As of September 2026, current guides from Android Authority (February 3, 2026), ContentStudio (updated July 21, 2026), and StoryViewerFree (updated September 21, 2026) describe silent screenshots for ordinary posts, Stories, Reels, profiles, and regular DMs, with alerts possible for temporary DM content. Those descriptions are a snapshot of app behavior, not a guarantee for every future release.

If a notification would have serious consequences, verify the exact mode before capturing anything. Use a test conversation with permission rather than experimenting on someone else’s private media.

- Update Instagram from your device’s official app store and note the app version.
- In a test account, publish an ordinary feed post and send a normal, persistent DM.
- From a second account, capture each item and ask the owner or sender whether any alert or status appeared.
- Repeat with a view-once or disappearing DM only when the sender has agreed to the test.
- Record the device platform, Instagram version, message mode, and result. A result from one account does not prove that every account has the same rollout.
This test can identify a changed interface, but it cannot promise that Instagram will keep the same rule after a later update.
Privacy and etiquette when saving a post
- Not receiving an alert does not make redistribution acceptable. Copyright, confidentiality, and the creator’s stated terms can still apply.
- Do not capture private or temporary messages without considering the sender’s expectation of privacy.
- For a post you may need later, Instagram’s Save feature keeps it in your account without creating a copy on your phone, although the creator can see aggregate or account-level save information only where Instagram exposes it.
- Blur usernames, profile photos, faces, and private messages before sharing a screenshot outside the original context.

Can someone tell if I screenshot their Instagram post later?
Not through Instagram’s ordinary screenshot notification system. A normal feed post is not reported, although the person could learn about it through another route, such as seeing a copy you share.

Current guides report no separate screenshot alert for Stories, including close-friends Stories. The owner can still see that you viewed the Story.
Will deleting the screenshot remove a notification?
Deleting a local screenshot does not retract an alert or status that Instagram may already have generated for temporary DM media.
Can airplane mode prevent a temporary-DM screenshot alert?
There is no dependable, current guarantee that offline tricks prevent detection. App behavior can synchronize later, so do not rely on airplane mode.
