What Happens When You Sacrifice a Card in Inscryption?

In Inscryption Act I, sacrificing a creature to pay a Blood cost normally kills it and removes it from the battle board. Its Blood value is applied to the card you are playing, and a creature that perishes this way gives you 1 Bone. Most eligible creatures are worth 1 Blood; a creature with Worthy Sacrifice is worth 3. A creature with Many Lives is the major survival exception: it supplies its Blood but does not die.

“Sacrifice” also describes two different events outside a Blood payment. At the Bone Altar, the selected card is permanently removed from your deck and may produce a boon. At a Campfire, the word refers to the risk that survivors eventually eat an upgraded card, not to the normal Blood-and-Bones battle action.

The three sacrifice contexts at a glance

Where it happens What you select What happens to the card Result
Act I battle board Eligible creatures on your side of the board A normal creature is killed and leaves the board; Many Lives survives Blood pays the new card’s cost; a creature that perishes gives 1 Bone
Bone Altar A card offered at the altar Permanently removed from the deck Black Goat produces the Boon of the Bone Lord; another creature produces a Minor Boon; a Pelt produces nothing
Campfire The card receiving a Power or Health upgrade After the initial safe opportunity, survivors may eat and remove it Power +1 or Health +2 at the event; certain creatures can poison the survivors when eaten

These are separate systems. A Blood sacrifice is a combat cost; the altar is deck removal; the Campfire outcome is an event risk.

How a Blood sacrifice works in Act I

1. Start a card play with a Blood cost

When you attempt to play a Leshy-style card that costs one or more Blood, the game begins a selection step. You must choose creatures already on your side of the battle board. Cards that are not eligible for the sacrifice cannot be used to meet that cost.

2. Select enough Blood value

The game totals the sacrifice values of the creatures you select. An ordinary eligible creature contributes 1 Blood. A creature carrying Worthy Sacrifice contributes 3 instead. You can therefore reach a larger cost with fewer bodies when one of your creatures has that sigil.

If the creatures you can select do not provide enough Blood, the game prevents the play. The card is not placed by simply choosing an insufficient group; you must meet the full requirement before the play can resolve.

3. Resolve the selected creatures

For a normal creature, selecting it as payment is lethal. It is removed from the active board rather than remaining as a blocker or attacker. The Blood it supplied is applied to the card you were trying to play.

4. Apply the Bone rule

A card that perishes through the sacrifice grants 1 Bone. This follows the general perishing rule: when a card dies for any reason, the game awards one Bone. The award is tied to perishing, not merely to being clicked during the selection step.

Do sacrificed cards die or return to the deck?

In the ordinary Act I Blood interaction, a sacrificed creature dies and leaves the battle board. Sacrifice does not send it back into your deck or preserve it as an active card. The immediate gameplay effect is the creature’s removal, the Blood payment, and—if it actually perishes—the one-Bone gain.

That answer applies to a normal creature in the battle-payment context. It does not describe the Bone Altar, whose explicit effect is permanent removal from the deck, or the Campfire, where an upgraded card can later be eaten by the survivors. Checking the location of the interaction matters more than the word “sacrifice” by itself.

How much Blood and how many Bones do you receive?

Sacrificed creature Blood supplied Does it perish? Bone from the sacrifice
Normal eligible creature 1 Yes 1
Creature with Worthy Sacrifice 3 Normally yes, unless another survival effect applies 1 if it perishes
Creature with Many Lives Its normal sacrifice value No Not from perishing, because it survives

Blood is additive. If you select several ordinary creatures, each contributes 1 toward the cost; a Worthy Sacrifice creature contributes 3 for that selection. Bones are counted separately: each selected creature that actually perishes supplies one Bone, so survival effects can change the Bone result even when the Blood requirement is met.

The sigils that change a sacrifice

Many Lives: Blood without death

Many Lives changes the normal lethal result. The creature can be selected for a Blood payment, still supplies its Blood value, and remains alive instead of being removed. Because it does not perish, it does not trigger the one-Bone reward that applies when a card dies.

This makes Many Lives valuable when you need to spend a creature to unlock an expensive play but do not want to lose that creature permanently from the board. It also means you should not count on the sacrifice to generate a Bone when Many Lives is involved.

Worthy Sacrifice: three Blood instead of one

Worthy Sacrifice changes the amount of Blood supplied. For the purpose of paying a Blood cost, the creature counts as 3 Blood rather than the normal 1. The sigil does not, by itself, say that the creature survives; absent a separate survival effect, the ordinary sacrifice result still applies and the creature perishes, awarding 1 Bone.

Use the sigil to reduce the number of creatures you must select for a large cost. It is especially important when the board has too few eligible bodies to reach the requirement using only one-Blood sacrifices.

What happens at the Bone Altar?

The Bone Altar is not a second way to pay a card’s Blood cost. It is a deck-management interaction. The card you select is permanently removed from the deck, so this sacrifice has a lasting effect on future draws rather than merely clearing a creature from the current battle board.

Altar outcomes by card type

Card sacrificed at the altar Outcome
Black Goat Grants the Boon of the Bone Lord
Another creature Grants a Minor Boon
Pelt Grants nothing

The permanent deck removal is the defining cost. Do not assume that an altar sacrifice also provides the battle-board Blood payment or the ordinary one-Bone reward; those resources belong to the separate combat-perishing rule. At the altar, the relevant benefit is the boon listed for the card type.

What “sacrifice” means at a Campfire

The Campfire presents an upgrade choice: increase Power by 1 or increase Health by 2. The first opportunity is safe, but repeated buffs can eventually create a different danger: the survivors may eat and remove the card being upgraded.

The survivor-eating risk

This is not the normal Act I Blood-payment sequence. You are not selecting a creature to generate Blood for another card, and the event is not described as a Bone-producing death. The risk is that continuing to seek buffs can cause the campfire survivors to consume the upgraded card, removing it from the run.

Poisoned survivors

Some creatures can turn that risk into a strategic advantage. If a Ring Worm, Adder, or Long Elk is eaten by the survivors, it can poison them. Poisoned survivors do not attack at later Campfires during that run, preventing the later survivor attacks that would otherwise threaten another upgraded card.

Thus, the Campfire decision has two distinct questions: which stat upgrade you want now, and whether you are willing to expose the card to the later survivor-eating outcome. The poison interaction concerns future Campfire attacks, not Blood, Bones, or the Bone Altar.

Which act are you playing?

The Blood explanation above is primarily an Act I rule associated with Leshy’s cards. Inscryption changes its card-cost systems in later acts, so an explanation that treats Blood sacrifices as universal can mislead you.

Act III, in particular, primarily uses Energy rather than the Act I Blood system. When a later-act card asks for a different resource, use that act’s cost rules instead of assuming that selecting a creature will produce Blood or follow the same death-and-Bone sequence.

A practical way to read any sacrifice prompt

  1. Identify the location. Decide whether the prompt is on the battle board, at the Bone Altar, or at a Campfire. The location determines whether you are paying Blood, deleting a deck card, or risking a survivor-eating event.
  2. Check the act and cost system. The Blood procedure is the Act I, Leshy-style interaction. Later acts can use different resources.
  3. Read the selected card’s sigils. Worthy Sacrifice changes the Blood value to 3. Many Lives changes the survival result while preserving the Blood contribution.
  4. Count the actual requirement. Add each selected creature’s Blood value and stop if the total is below the card’s cost; the game will not allow an underfunded play.
  5. Predict the consequence that matters. For a normal battle sacrifice, expect the creature to perish and award 1 Bone. At the altar, expect permanent deck removal and check the boon category. At a Campfire, weigh the immediate +1 Power or +2 Health against the possibility of later survivor attacks.

Key takeaways

  • A normal Act I Blood sacrifice kills the selected creature and removes it from the board.
  • The selected creature’s Blood pays the new card’s cost: normally 1 Blood, or 3 with Worthy Sacrifice.
  • A creature that perishes through sacrifice gives 1 Bone.
  • Many Lives supplies Blood but survives, so it does not produce a Bone through perishing.
  • Bone Altar sacrifice permanently removes the selected card from the deck and may grant a boon; a Pelt grants nothing.
  • Campfire sacrifice language concerns survivors eating an upgraded card after repeated buffs, with Ring Worm, Adder, and Long Elk able to poison those survivors.
