It is not a complete feature-for-feature replacement: Google lists gaps such as Interpreter mode and support for some media providers, and the ability to switch back depends on whether Assistant is still available on your device during Google’s 2026 rollout.
The change applies primarily to the mobile assistant. It can also affect certain watches, compatible earbuds or headphones and Android Auto projected from the phone, but it does not automatically move every Google Assistant speaker, display or car to Gemini.

What changes immediately on the phone
Gemini becomes the default mobile assistant once you select it on a supported device. The usual entry points remain, but their destination changes:

- Touch activation: A configured shortcut, such as pressing and holding the power button, can launch Gemini instead of Assistant. The exact shortcut depends on the phone maker and Android version.
- Questions and planning: Gemini can answer questions and help with tasks such as travel planning.
- Device controls: Google documents actions including changing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb and volume settings, taking a photo or screenshot and powering off the device. Individual actions can depend on your settings and notification permissions.
Google describes Assistant as part of the routing process even when Gemini is primary. Assistant can recognize the wake phrase, apply Voice Match and pass the request to Gemini. It may also complete familiar, quick voice actions that Gemini does not yet handle itself. Therefore, hearing an Assistant response does not necessarily mean your phone switched back to Assistant.

Gemini is not full Google Assistant parity
Replacing the default assistant does not carry over every service that worked with Assistant. Google specifically identifies several categories that may be unavailable in Gemini:
- Some media providers, including certain podcast, news and radio services.
- Some third-party music providers.
- Interpreter mode. Google says you must switch to Assistant to use it.
Support can change as Google updates Gemini, so check the current feature list before changing assistants if a particular media service, language tool or automation is essential. If Assistant remains available on your device, Google says you can switch to it for an unsupported feature.

How to decide if the gaps matter

Which devices actually change
The first boundary is important: this is a change to the mobile assistant on eligible Android phones and tablets, not a universal replacement across your Google account.

How to replace Google Assistant with Gemini
Availability is controlled by Google’s account and device requirements. Before changing anything, make sure the Google app is selected as the phone’s default assist app; Google requires this for Gemini to be selected as the mobile assistant.
- Install or open the Gemini app on the Android phone or tablet.
- Sign in with an eligible Google Account. Work or school accounts, supervised accounts and some languages or regions may not support every feature.
- In Gemini’s account or app controls, choose the option to make Gemini your mobile assistant and follow the confirmation prompts. The wording can vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Test both “Hey Google” and your phone’s touch shortcut. Ask a simple question, then try a supported control such as changing volume or turning on Do Not Disturb.
- If a familiar request fails, check whether it is one of the Assistant features Google lists as unsupported before changing other settings.
Google’s eligibility and setup requirements are in Get started with the Gemini mobile app – Android. Device manufacturers use different names for the default-assistant menu, so your Settings search may be more reliable than following a phone-specific path from another model.

If Assistant is still offered on your device, Google provides a switch-back control in the Gemini app. Open Gemini, open its account or app settings and select the control labeled Switch to Google Assistant (the exact wording and location can vary). Confirm the change, then test the wake phrase or touch shortcut.
Android also exposes a system-level choice for the default digital assistant. In Settings, search for Digital assistant app, Default digital assistant or Assist app, choose Google Assistant or None, and save. The menu name and path differ by manufacturer. Selecting None disables a default assistant rather than restoring Assistant.
Deleting Gemini alone is not a reliable switch-back method. Google’s management instructions state that removing the app does not automatically remove it as the default assistant. Change the default-assistant or activation setting directly if your goal is to stop a button or voice shortcut. See Manage or delete the Gemini app on your Android device.

The September 2026 removal rollout changes reversibility
Google Assistant’s availability is time-sensitive. In the August 6, 2026 announcement, Google Home & Nest Community Manager Nandini Thakur wrote: “Starting on September 3rd, Google Assistant on your mobile device is being discontinued, and Gemini will be the voice assistant experience on Android.” Google said the removal would begin September 3, 2026 and roll out over a few weeks.
That announcement does not mean every phone changed on the same day. More importantly, it says that once Assistant access has been removed for a user, that user can no longer use or switch back to Assistant on the affected phone, tablet or paired devices. Check the controls on your own device: a visible switch-back option indicates that Assistant is still available there, while its disappearance may reflect completion of the rollout rather than a broken installation.
Standalone devices have separate timelines and behavior. The announcement says Nest and Home speakers and displays are not affected by this mobile change, and cars with Google built-in continue using Assistant beyond September 3, 2026.
What happens to “Hey Google,” Voice Match and your activity
Gemini does not mean that every sound near the phone is sent to Google. Google distinguishes standby detection from activation. When the wake phrase is recognized, Assistant may use Voice Match and route the request to Gemini.
If Assistant helps Gemini complete a quick voice action, Google says that interaction is stored in Gemini Apps Activity according to your Keep Activity setting. You can review or delete that activity. If you switch to Assistant, Assistant interactions are saved to your Google Account when Web & App Activity is turned on. Existing Gemini Apps Activity is not automatically deleted when you switch assistants.

- Review Keep Activity in Gemini’s activity controls if you do not want eligible Gemini-assisted interactions retained under that setting.
- Review Web & App Activity if you use Assistant and want to control whether those interactions are saved to your Google Account.
- Deleting one activity history does not automatically erase the other, so check both controls when changing assistants.
These controls affect saved activity; they do not establish that every unactivated utterance is transmitted or retained.

Gemini’s mobile availability depends on four factors: the Android device, the Google Account, the selected language and the country or territory. Google also notes that some functions are unavailable on work or school accounts, supervised accounts or in particular languages and regions.
- Default assist app: The Google app must be the default assist app on Android for Gemini to be selected as the mobile assistant.
- Account type: A managed work or school account may not expose the same Gemini controls as a personal account.
- Supervision: Supervised accounts can have restrictions that prevent activation or individual features.
- Language and location: A feature documented for one language or country may not appear in another.
- Manufacturer menus: Settings labels, power-button behavior and available default-assistant choices vary by phone maker.
Common problems after the change
“Hey Google” still produces an Assistant response
That can be normal. Assistant may still detect the wake phrase, apply Voice Match and fulfill a quick action while Gemini remains the primary assistant. Check the default digital assistant setting only if the activation destination itself is wrong.
A podcast, radio station or music provider no longer works
First compare the request with Google’s unsupported-feature list. Some media providers are not supported in Gemini. If the switch-back control remains available, use Assistant for that request; otherwise the service may not be available through the mobile assistant on that device.

Interpreter mode is missing
Google currently requires Google Assistant for Interpreter mode. If Assistant is still available, use the Gemini app’s switch-back control or the Android default-assistant setting. If the rollout removed Assistant access, the control may no longer be offered.

Deleting Gemini did not stop the shortcut
Removing the app does not necessarily change the default assistant. Open Android’s default digital-assistant setting and select another assistant or None. Also check the phone maker’s gesture or power-button shortcut setting.
The switch-back option has disappeared
Google’s September 2026 rollout can remove Assistant access from the affected mobile device. Confirm that the phone is online, the Google app is current and the correct account is active, then check the default-assistant menu. If Assistant is no longer listed after the rollout reaches your device, Google’s announcement says switching back is no longer available on that affected device.
Practical choice: who should make the switch?
Gemini is the sensible default if your priority is conversational answers, planning and a growing set of Android controls, and you do not depend on the Assistant features Google has excluded. Keep Assistant where available if Interpreter mode or a particular podcast, radio, news or third-party music provider is central to your daily routine. If your household relies on Nest speakers, displays or a car with Google built-in, changing the phone does not by itself change those standalone devices.
Before confirming, test the exact three or four commands you use most, verify that your account and language are eligible, and review both Gemini Apps Activity and Web & App Activity settings. The result is a phone-centered change with device-specific exceptions, not a single switch that converts every Google Assistant product at once.
