Favoriting a Pokémon in Pokémon GO adds a star to its status and protects it from being transferred. While that star remains, the Pokémon cannot be transferred; you must remove it from favorites first. The feature does not raise CP, improve appraisal, change moves, or provide a battle bonus. It is an inventory-safety control for Pokémon you do not want to delete accidentally.
What the Favorite star does
Open a Pokémon’s summary and tap the star icon to mark it as a favorite. Niantic describes the result as adding the Pokémon to your favorites list. The important practical consequence is transfer protection: Niantic’s Pokémon GO Help Center says, “Favorited Pokémon can’t be transferred until they’re removed from the list.”

That protection remains active for as long as the star is present. If you select the Pokémon in a transfer flow, the game will not let you complete the transfer while it is favorited. You must deliberately un-favorite it, then start or resume the transfer process.

Favoriting does not change the Pokémon’s Combat Power, individual values, appraisal, level, type, moves, evolution options, or battle performance. The official help material documents the star as a favorites status and a transfer block; it does not document a gameplay boost or stat modification. A favorite Pokémon is otherwise the same Pokémon it was before you tapped the star.

The star also should not be treated as a universal lock. The official guidance specifically establishes prevention of transfers. It does not say that favoriting blocks evolving, powering up, teaching a move, trading, assigning the Pokémon to other game activities, or every other action. Use the favorite status for the risk it is documented to address: accidental transfer.
Why players use favorites
Transfers are permanent. Niantic’s transfer guidance explains that a transferred Pokémon cannot be recovered. That makes the favorite star useful whenever a Pokémon would be costly or impossible to replace.
- Rare catches: a Pokémon with unusual availability, a regional origin, or a special encounter history.
- Strong specimens: a Pokémon you intend to power up, evolve, use in a battle league team, or keep as a high-quality backup.
- Sentimental Pokémon: a first catch, a trade from a friend, a costume, or another personal keepsake.
- Important project Pokémon: candidates you are saving while deciding between evolutions, moves, or future events.
- Bulk-storage protection: Pokémon you want to retain while sorting a crowded collection, before making a large transfer selection.
Favoriting is especially helpful when transferring many Pokémon at once. A marked Pokémon remains protected until you explicitly remove the star, reducing the chance that a fast tap or a broad selection deletes the wrong individual.

- Open Pokémon GO and tap the Poké Ball menu.
- Select Pokémon to open your collection.
- Tap the Pokémon you want to protect. This opens its summary.
- Tap the star icon near the top of the summary. When the star is filled or otherwise shown as active, the Pokémon is favorited.
- Return to the collection or close the summary. The status is saved automatically; there is no separate save button.
Check the star visually before leaving the summary if the Pokémon is valuable. If the icon did not change, tap it again and confirm that the active state is visible. A favorite is applied to that specific Pokémon, not to every Pokémon of the same species.
Favoriting several Pokémon
The favorite status belongs to each individual entry. If you have multiple Pokémon of one species, mark each one you want protected. Favoriting one does not automatically favorite its duplicates, evolutions, previous forms, or future catches.
How to find your favorited Pokémon
Pokémon GO provides a search filter for favorites. In the Pokémon collection, tap the search field and enter favorite. The inventory then filters to Pokémon marked with the Favorite status. Niantic documents this exact search term in its search and filtering guide.

- Open the Pokémon collection.
- Tap the search box at the top.
- Type
favoriteexactly as the documented filter term. - Review the filtered list. Only Pokémon carrying the favorite status should remain visible.
- Clear the search field when you want to return to the full collection.
This search is useful for an inventory audit: you can see every Pokémon protected by the star without scrolling through species, dates, or Combat Power values. It is also a quick way to check whether you accidentally left a Pokémon favorited before attempting a transfer.

Can you transfer a favorited Pokémon?
Not while it is favorited. The transfer restriction lasts until you remove the star. If the game will not allow a transfer and the Pokémon shows a favorite star, that is the expected behavior rather than an error.
How to transfer one after removing the star
- Open the Pokémon’s summary from your collection.
- Tap the active star to remove the Favorite status.
- Confirm that the star is no longer active.
- Use the summary’s menu and choose Transfer, or select the Pokémon through the normal transfer workflow.
- Read the confirmation screen carefully, then confirm only if you are certain. The transfer cannot be undone.
Removing the star does not transfer the Pokémon by itself. It only removes the protection, leaving the Pokémon in your collection until you complete the separate transfer confirmation.
What to check before confirming
- Verify the Pokémon’s name, species, Combat Power, appraisal, and any costume or special marker.
- Make sure you selected the intended individual rather than another copy of the same species.
- Check whether the Pokémon is part of a planned evolution, trade, battle team, research task, or collection goal.
- Remember that the transfer is permanent; there is no restore or recycle bin.
Favorite versus tag: two different organization tools
Favorite and tag are separate collection features. A favorite is represented by a star and carries the documented transfer block. Tags are labels you create or apply to categorize Pokémon for your own organization. Niantic lists tags separately from the Favorite control in its summary and inventory guidance.

You can use both on the same Pokémon. For example, a battle candidate could be favorited to prevent transfer and tagged “Great League” to identify its intended use. A tag alone should not be treated as a replacement for the Favorite safeguard when accidental transfer is the concern.

Common situations and the right response
“I cannot transfer this Pokémon.”
Open its summary and look for the active star. If it is favorited, remove the star and then begin the transfer flow again. If no star is active, check the game’s current transfer requirements and confirmation prompts; the Favorite feature itself only explains the block while the status is active.
“I favorited it, but I cannot find it.”
Open the Pokémon collection and search for favorite. If it still does not appear, clear other search terms and filters, confirm that you are viewing the correct collection, and reopen the Pokémon’s summary to verify that the star is active. Search syntax and interface labels can change in future game updates, so consult Niantic’s current inventory search documentation if the filter behaves differently.
“Does the star protect it from every mistake?”
No blanket protection is established by the official documentation. The confirmed protection is against transfer. Continue to review prompts before evolving, powering up, trading, or making other changes, and do not assume that the star reverses an action that has already been completed.

“I removed the star by accident.”
Removing a favorite does not delete or transfer the Pokémon. Open its summary and tap the star again to restore the protection. If you already transferred it after removing the star, the transfer is irreversible according to Niantic’s transfer guidance.
A practical collection-safety routine
For a large or frequently sorted collection, use a consistent routine rather than relying on memory:
- Favorite rare, high-value, sentimental, and undecided Pokémon as soon as you catch or receive them.
- Use tags for extra categories such as battle projects, trade candidates, or evolution plans.
- Before a bulk transfer, search
favoriteand review the protected list so you know which entries should remain untouched. - When you intentionally transfer a favorite, remove the star only after deciding that the Pokémon is expendable.
- Read the final transfer confirmation every time, because a completed transfer cannot be reversed.
This separates two decisions that are easy to confuse: organization (tags) and deletion protection (Favorite). Keeping those roles distinct makes the collection easier to manage without implying that either feature changes the Pokémon’s underlying attributes.
What may change over time
The official help pages used for this explanation were checked on October 13, 2026. Pokémon GO’s interface, menu placement, and search behavior can change with app updates. The current documented principles are the star-based Favorite status, the transfer block while favorited, and the favorite inventory search.
