What Happens When You Delete, Disenchant, or Vendor Gear in World of Warcraft? Recovery Rules for 2026

If you deleted, disenchanted, or sold a World of Warcraft item by mistake, recovery may still be possible. A sale made during your current play session should be handled at the vendor’s Buyback tab. Earlier eligible sales, deleted items, and some disenchanted items are handled by Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Item Restoration service. Restored items are mailed to the character, while a disenchanted item requires you to have the materials it produced so Blizzard can reclaim them.

Recovery is not guaranteed. Blizzard limits the number of restorations, excludes several item categories, and permanently loses the ability to restore an item after its record has been purged. The exact handling can vary by World of Warcraft version or region, so treat Blizzard’s current support pages as the controlling rules.

Choose the recovery route first

The action you took and when you took it determine what to do next. Use this table before trying random support options.

What happened First action What you need Where the item returns
You sold it during the current login session Visit a vendor and open Buyback The item must still be in the vendor’s recent-sale list Your character’s bags, subject to the vendor interface
You deleted or destroyed it earlier Use the online Item Restoration page The item must be eligible and still retained in Blizzard’s records Your character’s in-game mailbox
You disenchanted it Use Item Restoration if the item appears The character must still have all materials gained from disenchanting Your mailbox; Blizzard removes the returned materials
The character carrying it was deleted Undelete the character first, then check restoration The character must qualify for Blizzard’s undelete service The restored character’s mailbox

Do not wait for Customer Support if the item is missing from the restoration list. Blizzard states that Customer Support will not restore World of Warcraft items that the service cannot recover, including records already purged from its database.

What happens when you vendor gear?

Current-session sales go to Buyback

When you sell gear to a non-player vendor, the item is normally placed in that vendor’s Buyback list rather than immediately becoming unrecoverable. Blizzard’s current support guidance says Buyback contains the last 12 items sold since login. Find any vendor, open the Buyback tab, select the item, and confirm the repurchase price.

Check Buyback before logging out or changing characters. The support article specifically directs players to Buyback for items sold or destroyed during the current play session instead of the web restoration page. If the item is no longer in the list, the restoration service may be the next option only if the item qualifies and has been retained.

Why a sale may not appear

  • You sold more than 12 items after the one you want, pushing it out of the list.
  • You logged out or otherwise ended the session in which the sale occurred.
  • The item is an excluded category, such as a consumable, quest item, or stackable material.
  • The interface is being checked at a different vendor or on a different character than the one that sold the item.

Buyback is a short-term safety net, not a permanent inventory history. If the item is important, repurchase it immediately and move it to a secure bag or bank slot before continuing to sell other gear.

What happens when you delete or destroy gear?

Deleting an item removes it from your character, but eligible gear can later appear in the Item Restoration service. Open Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Item Restoration page, choose the relevant character, and review the items offered for recovery.

An item that does not appear is not automatically waiting for a manual support intervention. It may be excluded by the rules, its record may have expired, or Blizzard may already have purged it. Blizzard says purged items cannot be restored by any means. The service also does not turn every deleted object into a recoverable entry; temporary objects, collectibles already registered to the account, and several other categories are deliberately omitted.

What happens when you disenchant gear?

Disenchanting converts an eligible item into crafting materials. Blizzard can sometimes reverse that action, but only if the character still has the materials received from the disenchant. During restoration, Blizzard takes those materials back and returns the original item to the character’s mailbox.

Material check before submitting

Keep the exact materials on the character that disenchanted the item. Do not mail, sell, craft with, deposit, or otherwise consume them while deciding whether to restore the gear. If the materials are gone or insufficient, the item may not be restorable even when it otherwise meets the service rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restoration is an exchange, not a free duplication: you get the item back, and the materials created by disenchanting are removed. If you already used those materials in a recipe, the service cannot leave both the crafted result and the restored gear in your possession.

How to use World of Warcraft Item Restoration

  1. Open Blizzard’s official Item Restoration service and sign in to the account that owns the character.
  2. Select the World of Warcraft game and the character that originally owned the item. A deleted character must be undeleted first, as Blizzard instructs in its Item Restoration rules.
  3. Review the recovery list carefully. Compare item names, quality, level, and approximate deletion or disenchant timing before selecting anything.
  4. Choose the eligible item and submit the restoration. Blizzard sends the returned item to that character’s in-game mailbox rather than placing it directly in your bags.
  5. Open the mailbox in game and verify the item. For a disenchanted item, confirm that the expected crafting materials have been removed.

The service is self-service: the page shows only records Blizzard currently permits you to restore. Repeatedly opening a ticket will not expose entries that the system has excluded or purged.

Current limits and account requirements

Blizzard’s current support article says each character can restore up to five items once every 24 hours. This is a per-character allowance, not a promise that five items will always be listed. The available entries still depend on item eligibility and record retention.

Item Restoration is unavailable when the account has no game time or active subscription, or when the account is suspended or banned. Resolve the account-status issue before interpreting an unavailable service as proof that the item itself is gone.

Rule What it means in practice
Five items per character per 24 hours You may need to wait for the cooldown before another restoration on that character; the allowance does not override exclusions.
Active game time or subscription required An inactive account cannot use the service until account eligibility is restored.
Suspended or banned accounts are blocked Restoration is unavailable while the account restriction remains in effect.
Mailbox delivery Leave room to receive mail and check the correct character after submitting.

Items Blizzard says the service cannot restore

The following categories are excluded under Blizzard’s current rules. A particular game version may apply additional restrictions, so check the live support article if your version differs from the standard service described there.

Excluded item type Reason or required alternative
Items destroyed in the current play session Use the vendor’s Buyback tab first.
Stackable crafting materials and quest items These are not listed as normal gear restorations.
Consumables, including reagents, potions, and food The service does not recover these used or deleted consumable objects.
Pets, mounts, and heirlooms already added to Collections The collection entry remains the relevant record; the individual item is not restored.
Temporary or holiday items Seasonal and time-limited objects are excluded.
Items traded or mailed to another character Once transferred, they are outside the original character’s restoration record.
Items sold on the Auction House Auction transactions are not reversed through Item Restoration.
Items destroyed before a Character Transfer or Faction Change Blizzard excludes these pre-transfer records from the service.

Deleting a collectible that is already registered does not normally remove the collection unlock. Conversely, deleting a physical item that was never added to a collection does not guarantee that a replacement can be recovered.

How long does Blizzard keep deleted gear?

Restoration records are time-limited, and the period depends on item quality and item level. Blizzard gives examples rather than universal deadlines: a Common (white) item may be recoverable for only about one day, while an Epic item may be recoverable for 30 days. These are illustrations of the retention system, not guarantees for every item with that color or level.

Once Blizzard purges an item from its database, the item is permanently unavailable. Blizzard makes the same point in its Quest Reward Restoration guidance: a listing is not permanent, and Customer Support cannot recover a purged record. Treat the quality examples as a reason to act quickly, not as a safe waiting period.

What affects the practical deadline?

  • Item quality and level: higher-value or higher-level gear may remain listed longer, but Blizzard does not publish a fixed deadline for every combination.
  • Other actions: transfers, faction changes, mailing, trading, and Auction House activity can make an item ineligible even before ordinary retention expires.
  • Character status: if the item belonged to a deleted character, undelete that character before checking the restoration list.
  • Account status: subscription, game-time, suspension, and ban state can prevent access to the service itself.

Why an item is missing from the restoration page

Use this troubleshooting order instead of assuming the item is permanently lost:

  1. Confirm that you selected the character that originally owned the item.
  2. If you sold it during the current session, visit a vendor and inspect Buyback; the restoration page is not the first route for that case.
  3. For a disenchant, verify that the original character still holds every material produced by the action.
  4. Check whether the object is a stackable material, quest item, consumable, collection unlock, temporary item, auctioned item, or transferred item.
  5. Check whether a Character Transfer or Faction Change occurred after the item was destroyed.
  6. Consider the retention window. A low-quality item may disappear from the list quickly, while an Epic example may remain for up to 30 days.
  7. Confirm that the account has active game time or a subscription and is not suspended or banned.
  8. If none of these checks explains the absence, the record may have been purged. Blizzard says Customer Support cannot restore purged items.

Do not confuse a missing item with a delayed mailbox. A successful submission sends the item to the selected character’s in-game mailbox; check that mailbox before submitting another request.

Do not rely on the old 30-day cooldown claim

Blizzard’s May 1, 2012 announcement for self-service restoration described a 30-day service cooldown. That historical announcement is not the current operating rule. The current Blizzard Support article states a limit of up to five items once every 24 hours on each character. For present-day decisions, use the live Item Restoration rules rather than the older announcement at Blizzard’s 2012 page.

A safe habit for avoiding permanent loss

Before deleting or disenchanting valuable gear, inspect its item level, quality, transmog or collection status, and whether it is needed for a set or quest. If you make a mistake, stop selling or crafting, keep any disenchant materials untouched, and start with the route that matches the timing: Buyback for a current-session vendor sale, then Item Restoration for eligible earlier sales, deletions, or disenchantments. Acting quickly matters because restoration records expire, and no support escalation can recover an item after Blizzard has purged it.

The service is therefore best understood as a limited safety net, not an inventory backup. It can reverse many ordinary mistakes, but only while the item remains eligible, the account qualifies, the character is correct, and any disenchant materials are available for Blizzard to reclaim.
