The provider may keep a backend copy for a stated period, retain a de-identified or legally required record, or store related memory, files, feedback, or connected-app data somewhere else. Deletion also does not normally “untrain” a model that has already learned from data.
The exact result depends on the service, account type, region, and settings. The practical rule is to treat chat deletion, memory removal, training controls, and file management as separate jobs.

What “delete” means in an AI chat service
Four different events are often described with the same word:

- History removal: the conversation disappears from the sidebar or activity page you use.
- Backend deletion: the provider removes stored copies from production systems according to its published schedule.
- Separate-data deletion: saved memories, uploaded files, feedback records, project data, or connected-app copies are handled through their own controls.
- Model-use status: whether the content can be used for future training or personalization. This is not the same as erasing data already processed.
A disappearing conversation is therefore evidence of an interface change, not proof that every copy has already been destroyed. Providers also describe exceptions for security investigations, legal obligations, human review, or data that has been de-identified and disconnected from your account.

Provider retention policies at a glance
The figures below are the consumer-product policies documented by each provider. They are policy windows, not independent audits of deletion performance.

Work, school, and enterprise accounts can follow administrator-controlled policies instead of the personal-account defaults. A user may not be able to view or change those settings.
ChatGPT: deleting a chat does not necessarily delete memory
What happens to the conversation
OpenAI’s ChatGPT retention documentation says a deleted chat is removed from the account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days. The same statement identifies exceptions: the data may already have been de-identified and disassociated from the user, or OpenAI may need to retain it longer for security or legal reasons. A deleted conversation cannot be restored through ChatGPT or Support.
Saved memories are a separate record
ChatGPT can save a fact or preference as a memory. Deleting the conversation that prompted that memory does not necessarily remove the saved memory. To clear information comprehensively, inspect the memory controls and remove the relevant entry, then delete the source chat. OpenAI says a log of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.
Turning off “Reference chat history” is also different from deleting conversations. OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion from its systems within 30 days, but the original chats remain in history until you delete them separately.

Files can outlive the chat
Files saved in ChatGPT’s Library are managed separately. Deleting a conversation does not automatically delete a file that was saved there. Check Library items, project or custom-GPT files, and any connected application that may have received the upload.
Gemini: activity settings, reviewed data, and the 72-hour window
Automatic and manual deletion
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Gemini Apps Activity is set to auto-delete after 18 months by default. The available choices described there are 3 months, 18 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. You can also delete individual chats or activity records manually.

Human-reviewed chats have a different lifecycle
Google states that chats reviewed by human reviewers, along with related information such as language, device type, location information, or feedback, are not deleted when you delete your activity. Those records are disconnected from your account and retained for up to three years. This is why an activity page disappearing should not be interpreted as universal erasure.
What Keep Activity off actually changes
When Keep Activity is off, future chats do not appear in Gemini Activity and are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Google nevertheless retains those chats with the account for 72 hours so it can respond, process feedback, and protect the service and users. If a chat was already reviewed by a service provider, deleting activity does not remove that reviewed copy.
Google also notes that work and school administrators may control retention. A managed account may not offer the same choices shown for a personal account.

Claude: immediate history removal and a 30-day backend schedule
Anthropic’s Privacy Center says consumer Claude users can delete conversations; they are removed from conversation history immediately and automatically deleted from Anthropic’s backend within 30 days. That statement concerns the deletion schedule, not every possible record created by safety, feedback, or other systems.

Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, but safety-flagged conversations may be handled under different rules. Do not treat an improvement setting as a promise that a deleted conversation or every associated record is gone on the same timetable.
Memory, personalization, files, and feedback are separate surfaces
Before deleting sensitive information, identify every place it may have been copied:
- Saved memory or personalization: a preference extracted from a chat can remain after the chat is deleted.
- Library and project files: an uploaded document may have its own record and deletion control.
- Connected applications: integrations can retain data in the destination service under that service’s policy.
- Feedback: thumbs-up, thumbs-down, written comments, or submitted examples can be linked to a separate review workflow.
- Exports and screenshots: downloaded transcripts, browser caches, device backups, and shared links are outside the provider’s chat-delete button.
Deleting the conversation addresses the conversation record. It does not automatically revoke a copy you exported or sent elsewhere.
History controls are not training controls
Turning off a history or model-improvement setting usually affects future collection or use; it rarely erases existing chats. OpenAI explicitly says turning off “Improve the model for everyone” does not delete or hide saved chats. Gemini’s Keep Activity off setting still allows the 72-hour service-retention period described above. Anthropic’s Incognito mode limits model-improvement use, while its deletion page supplies the separate 30-day backend schedule.

Temporary or incognito modes can reduce what is saved to your visible history and whether a memory is created, but they may still be retained for safety. In ChatGPT, Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models; OpenAI says they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety.

These policies describe account deletion and future-use controls, not model unlearning. If information was used in a training or improvement process before you changed a setting, deleting the source chat does not establish that the resulting model has been reversed. Providers may use filtering, de-identification, evaluation, or other processes, but the cited retention policies do not promise retroactive removal from model weights.
A practical deletion checklist
- Identify the service and account type. Confirm whether you are using a personal, work, school, enterprise, or managed account, and note the relevant region and product.
- Delete the conversation. Use the chat’s Delete command or the provider’s delete-all control. Archive is not deletion where archived content remains stored.
- Clear saved memories. Open the service’s memory or personalization page and remove facts that came from the conversation.
- Remove independent files. Check Library, projects, custom assistants, uploads, and any file-management area.
- Review connected apps and exports. Delete copies in integrations, downloaded files, shared links, notes, and backups.
- Set future-use controls. Turn off model-improvement, activity saving, or chat-history options if you do not want future conversations used in those ways. Treat this as prospective, not retroactive.
- Check temporary-mode limits. Read the provider’s safety-retention period before assuming a temporary or incognito chat vanishes immediately.
- Account for feedback and review. If you submitted feedback or the conversation was flagged or reviewed, expect a different retention path.
- Ask an administrator about managed accounts. A workplace or school policy may override the controls visible to you.
Common scenarios and what to do
The chat disappeared, but the assistant still remembers the detail
Look for a saved-memory entry and delete it separately. Then remove the original conversation and any related file or connected-app copy.
You turned off training but old chats are still visible
That is expected under the documented controls. A model-improvement switch changes future use; it does not delete saved history. Delete existing chats directly.
You deleted a Gemini chat but are concerned about a reviewer’s copy
Google says reviewed chats and related data can be disconnected from your account and retained for up to three years. Account deletion cannot be assumed to erase that reviewed record.
You need proof that a chat is gone immediately
No policy in the cited documentation promises instantaneous erasure from every system. Record the deletion date, read the provider’s stated window and exceptions, and avoid entering information that requires guaranteed immediate destruction.
You are using a company or school account
Contact the administrator or consult the organization’s retention notice. The administrator may set a longer period or disable user deletion controls.
What the published timelines do—and do not—prove
A 30-day or 72-hour period is a provider’s stated operational or policy window. It is not an independent measurement of whether every replica, backup, log, or downstream copy was deleted at the deadline. Likewise, “not used to train” does not mean “not retained for safety,” and “de-identified” does not mean the original account record remains recoverable.
