PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen you click a link, your browser navigates to its destination, obtains the page’s document and other resources, and turns their contents into pixels you can see and controls you can use. The work involves the browser, network services and servers—and it can overlap: a page may begin appearing before every resource has arrived.
This is a simplified mental model, not a fixed sequence that every browser follows on every visit. Cached DNS results or an existing connection can change what happens, and the service answering a request may rely on multiple servers or intermediaries rather than one computer.

What happens when you click a link?
The link identifies a destination. The browser begins navigating there and prepares a request for the resource, commonly the page’s HTML document. The browser and the destination then need a way to communicate.

DNS resolves the site name
People usually enter or click a human-readable site name, while network communication needs an IP address. DNS looks up the address associated with that name. DNS does not download the website; it helps the browser find where to send its request. A cached result can mean the browser does not need to perform a fresh lookup for every navigation.

A connection carries the request
For a new connection, the browser and server establish transport communication before exchanging the page request. One instructional example uses DNS resolution followed by a TCP three-way handshake and then an HTTP GET. That is a useful illustration, not a guarantee that every page load follows those exact steps: a connection may already exist, and the route can vary.
How does the browser ask for the page?
HTTP is the request-and-response conversation between the browser and the service handling the request. The browser commonly asks for the HTML document first. The response includes headers and content; on the ordinary successful path, that content supplies the requested page. Other responses can indicate different outcomes, but the key idea is that the browser requests resources and receives responses.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
A website load is usually not one request. The document can refer to stylesheets, scripts, images and other media, which the browser may request too. JavaScript can also initiate requests for additional resources later.

It parses structure and presentation
The browser parses HTML into a Document Object Model (DOM), a structured representation of the document. It processes CSS to determine how content should look, then works out the size and position of visible elements. JavaScript can add behavior or change the DOM, either before or after the first display.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
It lays out and paints pixels
Using the document and style information, the browser constructs a representation of what needs to be displayed, lays out visible elements, and paints the result on screen. As additional data arrives, it may update or repaint parts of the page. The complete page does not have to arrive before rendering can begin.
Why can a page appear before it is ready?
Loading is not a single instant. The browser can render progressively as it receives and processes content, so some text or images may appear while other resources are still loading. A visible page is not necessarily ready for interaction: JavaScript work can occupy the browser’s main thread and delay how quickly controls respond. Later resources or script-driven changes can also alter what is displayed.

| Stage | What happens | Possible clue |
|---|---|---|
| Name lookup | DNS resolves the site name to an IP address. | A name-resolution problem may prevent the browser from finding the destination. |
| Connection and request | The browser establishes or reuses communication and requests a resource over HTTP. | A connection or response problem may occur before the page content is available. |
| Resource discovery | The browser finds linked stylesheets, scripts, images and other media, then requests them. | A page that loads but lacks some content or presentation may involve resources that were not obtained or processed as expected. |
| Browser processing | The browser parses, lays out and paints content, while scripts may change the document. | A page that responds but looks incomplete or wrong may involve rendering or script-driven changes. |
The journey in one view
- You click a link, and the browser starts navigating to its destination.
- DNS can resolve the site name to an IP address; the browser establishes or reuses a connection.
- The browser requests the document, commonly HTML, and receives an HTTP response.
- As it parses the document, the browser discovers and requests other resources.
- The browser processes structure, styles and scripts, lays out visible content and paints pixels—often updating the page as more work completes.
