Adding someone as a Pixel VIP makes that person a Favorite contact on your compatible Pixel. Their calls and messages can be allowed through Do Not Disturb, and a Pixel VIPs widget can gather recent calls, messages, shared location, dates and other details in one place. It does not send the person a notification, change their phone, reveal private conversations or turn on location sharing.
The feature is available on Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold. The person you add can use an Android phone or an iPhone; only the phone configuring Pixel VIPs needs to be a supported Pixel.

What Pixel VIP status actually changes
Pixel VIPs is a feature in Google Contacts. Its most immediate effect is changing how your phone treats the selected contact: Google automatically adds the person to Favorites (also called Starred Contacts in some interfaces). Favorites can be given notification priority, allowing their calls or messages to bypass Do Not Disturb while other alerts are silenced.

This is a setting on your Pixel, not a status sent to the other person. They are not told that you marked them as a VIP, and their device does not receive a new permission or configuration. Google says the Do Not Disturb bypass can be turned off in settings if you want the contact highlighted in the widget without giving their notifications priority.

The second part is the Pixel VIPs home-screen widget. After you add the widget and choose people, it provides a central view of information that your phone and connected apps already hold about those contacts. The information shown depends on the apps installed, permissions granted, and whether the contact has supplied or shared the relevant data.
What the Pixel VIPs widget can show
The widget is not a new messaging or tracking service. It organizes information from Google Contacts and supported apps such as Phone, Google Messages, WhatsApp, Google Maps and Pixel Weather. Available cards and shortcuts can differ from one contact to another.

Seeing an item in the widget does not mean Pixel VIPs has obtained new access to the person’s accounts. It is intended to highlight information already collected by the apps you use.

Check the requirements first
- Use a Pixel 6 or later, including Pixel Fold.
- Install current versions of Google Contacts and the relevant apps, especially Google Messages, WhatsApp and Pixel Weather if you want their information to appear.
- Make sure the person exists as a Google Contact with usable contact details.
- Decide which permissions you are comfortable granting when Pixel VIPs requests them.
Add the contact in Google Contacts
- Open Google Contacts on the Pixel.
- Open Organize.
- Select Pixel VIPs.
- Choose the contacts you want to add.
- Grant the requested permissions. These permissions let the feature assemble information from supported apps; they do not grant the other person access to your phone.
Adding the person through this screen automatically places them in Favorites. That Favorite status is what makes notification prioritization possible.

Put the VIPs widget on the home screen
- Open your Pixel’s home-screen widget picker, normally by touching and holding an empty area of the home screen and selecting Widgets.
- Find the Contacts widget category.
- Select the Pixel VIPs widget and place it on the home screen.
- When prompted, choose the VIP contacts you want the widget to display.
Google’s labels can change slightly with Pixel software and app updates. If Pixel VIPs does not appear in the Contacts widget list, update Google Contacts and the Pixel system software, then check again.
How Do Not Disturb interacts with a VIP
By default, the practical notification benefit is priority treatment. Because a VIP is a Favorite, calls or messages from that person may reach you while Do Not Disturb is active, instead of being silenced with ordinary contacts. This is useful for a partner, family member, caregiver or another person whose messages you do not want to miss during meetings, sleep or other quiet periods.
The bypass applies to your notification rules. It does not force the other person’s messages to be delivered, override their phone’s settings, or guarantee that every alert will make noise. Your ringtone, vibration, app settings, connection, blocked-contact settings and other Do Not Disturb options can still affect what you experience.

If you want the widget and Favorite organization without interruption from that contact, review the notification-priority controls on your Pixel and disable the bypass. The exact wording can vary by Android version and locale.
Location sharing: what a VIP cannot see automatically
Adding a contact, even with their email address, does not enable location sharing. Pixel VIPs can show a shared real-time location only after the other person has deliberately shared it with you through Google Maps using the relevant email address. Google’s help information also refers to Find Hub for sharing from another Android device.
This distinction matters when you add a family member or emergency contact. The contact may appear in your VIP widget immediately, but the location area can remain empty until they approve sharing. Removing or withholding that share prevents the widget from displaying a location; VIP status is not a substitute for consent.
The same privacy boundary applies to messages and calls. Pixel VIPs may surface recent activity from Google Messages or WhatsApp, but adding a VIP does not expose private conversations that your apps could not already show to you. It also does not let the contact read your messages or inspect your call history.

The phone running Pixel VIPs must be a Pixel 6 or newer, including Pixel Fold. The selected contact does not need a Pixel: Google’s help description says people you add can use either iOS or Android.

The maximum number of VIPs is version- and locale-sensitive. Google’s current English-UK support page says up to 16 VIPs, while another version of Google’s help material surfaced with a limit of eight. Because those official help versions conflict, do not assume one universal number. Open the Pixel VIPs screen on your own phone and follow the limit shown there; an app or regional update can change the available capacity.
Google introduced Pixel VIPs in the June 2025 Pixel Drop as a Pixel-only Contacts widget. The launch description emphasized recent calls and messages, important dates and shared location, while later help information describes the wider set of possible cards and suggestions.

For calls
The Phone app needs a recent call record associated with the contact. If the number is saved under a different contact entry, duplicated, or missing, the widget may not connect the activity to the VIP.

For Google Messages
Recent conversations must be in Google Messages, and the app must be current and available to Pixel VIPs. A contact who only uses another messaging service will not produce Google Messages activity.

For WhatsApp
WhatsApp activity depends on WhatsApp being installed and updated, with whatever access the integration requests. The widget can show recent calls and messages, not an unrestricted copy of every conversation.
For dates and contact details
Birthdays, anniversaries and other significant dates appear only when they are stored in the contact or supplied through an available service. A blank date card usually means there is no date recorded, not that the VIP feature is malfunctioning.
For weather and local time
These cards depend on the location and weather information available to the Pixel. They may be absent when the necessary location or weather access is unavailable.

The contact is a VIP but notifications remain silent
- Confirm the person was added through Google Contacts > Organize > Pixel VIPs, rather than merely saved as a normal contact.
- Check whether the Favorite notification bypass was disabled in settings.
- Review the contact entry for duplicate numbers or addresses.
- Remember that Do Not Disturb is only one part of notification delivery; app, ringtone, connection and blocked-contact settings can still prevent an alert.
The widget is missing recent messages or calls
- Update Google Contacts, Google Messages, WhatsApp and Pixel system software.
- Check that the activity is actually in the app Pixel VIPs is expected to read.
- Review the permissions requested during setup.
- Allow time for recent activity to synchronize after an app update or a newly added contact.
The location card is empty
- Ask the person to share their location with the email address used by your contact record through Google Maps.
- If they are sharing from another Android device, check whether Find Hub is the service they used.
- Do not add an email address expecting that alone to activate sharing; it does not.
Pixel VIPs is not available
Verify that the phone is a Pixel 6 or later, including Pixel Fold, and that Google Contacts is updated. The feature is not documented as available on older Pixel models or non-Pixel phones.
When Pixel VIPs is useful—and when it is not
Pixel VIPs is most useful when you need one person’s updates to stand out and want a compact home-screen view of information already spread across Contacts, Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, Maps and weather services. A caregiver can prioritize a family member’s calls; a traveler can keep a shared location and local time close at hand; and anyone can keep birthdays or private notes beside the contact.
It is less useful if your important interactions do not occur in the supported apps, if you do not want Favorites to affect Do Not Disturb, or if the people you add have not shared the information you expect to see. The widget cannot manufacture missing contact dates, retrieve unshared locations or unlock conversations from apps it does not support.
