Windows 10 PCs do not stop working when support ends. Windows 10 version 22H2 and the covered Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Enterprise 2015 LTSB, and IoT Enterprise LTSB 2015 editions reached the end of standard support on October 14, 2025. The computer can still boot and run compatible software, but Microsoft no longer routinely supplies operating-system security fixes, feature updates, or technical assistance for those releases. The practical choice is to upgrade to Windows 11 if the hardware qualifies, use any remaining regional Extended Security Updates (ESU) coverage as a short bridge, or replace an incompatible PC.

What changes after Windows 10 support ends?

End of support is a servicing change, not a shutdown switch. Microsoft states that “Windows 10 PCs will continue to function.” Your files, installed programs, printers, and existing workflows can keep working after the lifecycle date, provided the hardware and applications remain compatible.

What stops is the normal maintenance channel for the affected release:

  • Security updates: New operating-system vulnerabilities are no longer routinely fixed for the covered release.
  • Feature updates: Windows does not receive the normal new capabilities and quality improvements delivered during standard servicing.
  • Technical support: Microsoft no longer provides ordinary lifecycle support for that release.

The risk is cumulative. New flaws and attack techniques can appear after the final supported update, while the unmaintained operating system remains in place. Official guidance does not provide a universal probability that a particular user will be compromised, so treat the situation as increased exposure rather than a guaranteed attack.

Which Windows 10 versions are covered?

The general October 14, 2025 date applies to Windows 10 version 22H2 and the editions identified in Microsoft’s lifecycle announcement: Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Enterprise 2015 LTSB, and IoT Enterprise LTSB 2015. Windows 10 LTSC and LTSB releases can have release-specific servicing schedules. If a device is used in a business, factory, medical environment, or other managed setting, do not assume the consumer date applies.

Check the installed edition and version

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then About.
  3. Read Windows specifications for the edition and version.
  4. Record whether the device is organization-managed before choosing a consumer ESU option.

A machine running an LTSC/LTSB release needs the lifecycle date for that exact release, not a date copied from the standard Windows 10 22H2 schedule.

Can you keep using a Windows 10 PC?

Yes. It can continue to start, connect to networks, open documents, and run compatible applications. End of support does not erase Windows, disable the license, or force an immediate replacement.

Continued operation is not the same as continued protection. Browsing, opening email attachments, installing software, using removable drives, and connecting to shared networks all create opportunities for a future Windows vulnerability to matter. A computer that is offline or used for a tightly controlled task has a different exposure profile from a daily internet-connected workstation, but neither situation restores Microsoft security servicing.

Why antivirus alone is not enough

Microsoft says Defender or a third-party antivirus product can help, but antivirus by itself cannot compensate for an operating system that no longer receives regular security updates. Antivirus generally focuses on detecting malicious files and behavior; an unpatched operating system can contain exploitable weaknesses before an antivirus product can identify an attack.

Keep antivirus enabled, install browser and application updates, use separate accounts where practical, enable multifactor authentication on important services, maintain offline or otherwise protected backups, and avoid running an unsupported PC with unnecessary administrator privileges. These layers reduce risk; they do not turn Windows 10 back into a supported operating system.

Your three practical paths

Path Who it fits Support horizon Cost and constraints
Upgrade to Windows 11 A Windows 10 PC that meets Windows 11 requirements and is offered the upgrade through Windows Update Supported migration path, subject to the Windows 11 lifecycle Microsoft describes the upgrade as free for an eligible device; confirm compatibility on the PC
Consumer ESU Personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 devices in markets where the offer is available Short extension only; the US guidance listed critical and important updates through October 13, 2026 US choices listed no additional cost with PC-settings sync, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time US$30 plus applicable tax; regional terms differ
Replace the PC Hardware that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, or users who need a longer supported life Depends on the replacement’s Windows 11 support lifecycle Hardware purchase and migration effort; compare workload, accessibility, ports, peripherals, and support needs

Do not choose by age alone. First establish eligibility, then compare the remaining useful life of the current machine with the cost and disruption of replacement.

How to check whether your PC can upgrade to Windows 11

Microsoft directs users to the Windows PC Health Check app or the published Windows 11 system requirements. A processor generation, firmware setting, security capability, memory, storage, or graphics requirement can make a computer ineligible even when it still runs Windows 10 well.

  1. Install or open PC Health Check from Microsoft’s official Windows guidance.
  2. Run the compatibility check and read the specific reason if the device fails.
  3. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates. If Windows 11 is offered, review the compatibility and restart requirements, then follow the upgrade prompts.
  5. Back up important files and confirm that essential printers, specialist applications, accessibility tools, and peripherals work with Windows 11 before starting.

Eligibility and upgrade availability are device-specific. A computer that technically meets requirements may not receive the offer at the same moment as another machine, and a device that fails one requirement should not be forced through an unsupported installation without understanding the support and reliability consequences.

How consumer ESU works—and where it stops

Consumer ESU is an extension, not a new Windows 10 feature program. Microsoft’s consumer description covers personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 devices in most markets and excludes organization-managed and enterprise-licensed devices from that consumer offer.

US enrollment terms listed by Microsoft

The US page listed three ways to enroll:

  • No additional cost when syncing PC settings.
  • Redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
  • A one-time US$30 payment, or local-currency equivalent, plus applicable tax.

The same US guidance set the security-update endpoint at October 13, 2026, regardless of when enrollment occurred. Because the current date is October 16, 2026, that US endpoint has passed. A reader in another country must check the local Microsoft page and the ESU prompt in Windows Settings; the United States terms and dates cannot be generalized internationally. A UK result, for example, displayed a different endpoint.

What ESU does not provide

  • It does not add feature updates to Windows 10.
  • It does not make an incompatible PC eligible for Windows 11.
  • It does not provide a long-term replacement for a supported operating system.
  • It does not apply automatically to an organization-managed or enterprise-licensed device through the consumer program.

If Settings no longer offers enrollment, or the local deadline has passed, do not pay a third party claiming to restore Windows servicing. Move to an eligible Windows 11 upgrade, a supported replacement, or an organization-specific lifecycle program administered by the relevant IT team.

What happens to Microsoft 365, Office, and OneDrive?

Application servicing can outlast operating-system servicing, but it does not extend Windows 10 security support.

Software Windows 10 status described by Microsoft Important limitation
Microsoft 365 Apps Can continue functioning on Windows 10; security updates are provided through October 10, 2028 Unsupported Windows may still cause performance or reliability problems; these updates do not patch Windows itself
Microsoft 365 Apps feature servicing Feature updates and eligible Copilot support continue until Version 2608 is released; afterward the apps remain on Version 2608 with security updates through October 10, 2028 The exact behavior depends on the subscription app channel and eligibility
OneDrive desktop app Updates continue on Windows 10 version 22H2 through October 10, 2028 Older Windows 10 versions do not receive OneDrive desktop app updates under the cited guidance
Perpetual Office editions Do not assume the Microsoft 365 Apps policy applies Microsoft’s Windows 10 overview says Office 2016 and Office 2019 support has ended; verify the exact edition

Continued access to Word, Excel, Outlook, or OneDrive can make a Windows 10 computer feel normal while its underlying operating system remains unpatched. Treat the app dates and the Windows date as separate timelines.

Risks to evaluate before delaying the decision

Security exposure

Future Windows vulnerabilities will not receive the routine fixes that supported releases receive. The sources do not quantify the chance of a successful attack, so the responsible conclusion is that exposure increases over time rather than that every PC will be breached.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Application and hardware compatibility

Browsers, drivers, security tools, peripherals, and specialist software can eventually drop Windows 10 even when Microsoft 365 Apps remain available. Check the vendor requirements for software you cannot replace, such as accounting, accessibility, scientific, industrial, or creative tools.

Support and recovery

When a problem occurs, Microsoft technical assistance for the covered Windows release is no longer part of the standard lifecycle. Keep installation media, license information, recovery keys, tested backups, and a written list of critical applications before making a migration decision.

Operational and privacy impact

An unsupported PC may fail an employer, school, insurer, or customer security policy even if it still works technically. If the computer handles regulated information or connects to a business network, ask the responsible administrator for the organization’s supported-device requirement rather than enrolling in consumer ESU.

When replacement is the sensible choice

Replacement is appropriate when PC Health Check identifies hardware that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, when key applications require a newer platform, or when repair and migration risk outweigh the value of the old machine. Shop for a Windows 11-compatible PC or laptop based on the work it must perform—not simply the cheapest specification.

  • Workload: office work, development, photography, video, gaming, or specialist software may need different processor, memory, and graphics capacity.
  • Accessibility: verify screen size, keyboard layout, ports, touch support, audio, and compatibility with assistive devices.
  • Peripherals: check scanners, printers, docks, storage devices, and older interfaces before discarding the old computer.
  • Migration: plan account sign-in, browser profiles, application licenses, files, backups, and two-factor authentication recovery codes.
  • Lifecycle: confirm that the proposed model supports Windows 11 and has a published support path suitable for your expected ownership period.

Do not infer that every Windows 10 owner needs a new computer. An eligible upgrade may be free, and a short ESU period may be sufficient for someone arranging a purchase or waiting for a specialized application to be certified.

A decision checklist for October 2026

  1. Identify the installation: record edition, version, whether it is LTSC/LTSB, region, and management status.
  2. Run compatibility checks: use PC Health Check and Windows Update rather than guessing from the PC’s age.
  3. Protect data: make and verify a backup before upgrading, enrolling, or replacing hardware.
  4. Choose the horizon: use Windows 11 for supported continuity, ESU only where a current local offer genuinely exists, or replacement for incompatible hardware.
  5. Audit applications: distinguish Microsoft 365 Apps, OneDrive, perpetual Office, browsers, and specialist programs; each can have a different support date.
  6. Plan the exit: set a purchase, migration, or upgrade date instead of treating an extension as permanent.

Common misconceptions

“The PC will stop booting on the deadline.”

No. The machine remains usable; the unsupported servicing channel is what ends.

“Installing antivirus restores protection.”

No. Antivirus is a useful layer, but Microsoft says it cannot replace operating-system security updates.

“Microsoft 365 support through 2028 means Windows 10 is supported through 2028.”

No. The October 10, 2028 date applies to Microsoft 365 Apps security updates and, for Windows 10 version 22H2, OneDrive desktop app updates. It does not extend Windows 10 OS servicing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Every Windows 10 PC must be replaced immediately.”

No. Check Windows 11 eligibility first, and consider a valid local ESU bridge if you need short-term time. Replacement is the path for incompatible hardware or a longer supported future.

Bottom line

Windows 10 remains usable after its October 14, 2025 end-of-support date, but the operating system no longer receives routine security fixes, feature updates, or standard technical support for the covered releases. Check compatibility and upgrade to Windows 11 when possible. If the device is ineligible, use only a verified, locally available ESU offer as a temporary bridge—US coverage listed by Microsoft ended October 13, 2026—or replace the PC. Keep antivirus, backups, and updated applications, but do not mistake those measures or continued Microsoft 365 operation for restored Windows 10 support.
