When galaxy clusters collide, their stars and galaxies usually pass through one another, but their enormous reservoirs of thin, hot plasma crash together. That gas is compressed, slowed by ram pressure, and heated to X-ray-emitting temperatures. Dark-matter halos, which interact mainly through gravity, continue onward with the galaxies. Astronomers can therefore see the hot gas in X-rays and infer the otherwise invisible mass from gravitational lensing. The resulting offsets—most famously in the Bullet Cluster—show how a merger separates the universe’s visible, gaseous, and dark components.
The short answer: a cluster merger is three different collisions at once
A galaxy cluster is not a dense ball of stars. It is a gravitationally bound system made mostly of dark matter, plus a smaller but observable amount of extremely diffuse intracluster gas and hundreds or thousands of galaxies. During a merger, each component responds differently:

| Component | What happens during the encounter | How astronomers detect it |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxies and stars | Most pass through because stars occupy a minute fraction of the space between galaxies. Their paths are deflected mainly by gravity. | Optical and near-infrared images |
| Intracluster gas | The diffuse plasma collides, experiences ram pressure, forms shock fronts, and heats up. | X-ray emission, temperature maps, and gas-motion measurements |
| Dark matter | Its halos pass through one another with little non-gravitational drag; gravity still changes the overall trajectories. | Weak and strong gravitational-lensing maps, calibrated with the galaxy distribution |
The visual result can be counterintuitive: the pink or red X-ray glow may sit behind the galaxies and the lensing mass rather than on top of them. That is not a photographic view of dark matter. It is an inference from the way the unseen mass bends light from more distant galaxies.
What happens from first approach to the aftermath?
1. Gravity draws two clusters together
Two clusters can begin millions of light-years apart and still be pulled together by their combined mass. Their dark-matter halos dominate the gravitational potential, while galaxies orbit within those halos and gas fills the space between them. The approach accelerates until the gas begins moving supersonically through the other cluster’s intracluster medium.

2. The gas makes first contact
The intracluster medium is extremely thin by terrestrial standards, but it extends across millions of light-years. When the two gas atmospheres interpenetrate, pressure and magnetic fields impede the flow. Ram pressure strips gas from the moving halos and can leave a bright, displaced trail. Unlike stars, plasma particles are numerous enough over such a huge volume to exchange energy collectively through electromagnetic fields.
3. Supersonic motion creates a bow shock
Gas moving faster than sound in the surrounding plasma drives a curved, bow-shaped shock. Cluster shocks are called collisionless: the plasma is so rarefied that ordinary particle-to-particle impacts are too infrequent to provide the necessary braking. Electric and magnetic fields, waves, and collective particle behavior mediate the abrupt change in density, pressure, and velocity.
4. The cores pass and the components separate
At closest approach, the gas loses momentum and is held back, while the galaxies and dark-matter concentrations continue farther ahead. Gravitational lensing can then show mass peaks that are offset from the X-ray-bright gas. A merger may have more than one passage; the cores can overshoot, slow under gravity, and fall back toward one another before settling into a single cluster.

5. The disturbed system relaxes
After the main passage, turbulence, sound waves, and additional shocks redistribute energy. Some gas cools gradually, while other regions remain hot for a long time. The final object may contain a single enlarged dark-matter halo, residual substructure, and a gas atmosphere whose temperature and density remember the violence of the merger.
Why do the galaxies usually avoid direct crashes?
A galaxy cluster can contain hundreds or thousands of galaxies, yet the stars inside those galaxies occupy an extraordinarily small fraction of the cluster’s total volume. A star would have to pass very close to another star for a direct impact, and the average separation is so large that the probability is tiny during a cluster crossing. Galaxies can collide or merge with one another inside a cluster, especially where their orbits bring them close, but a cluster-wide merger is not a wall of stellar systems smashing together.

Galaxies are nevertheless affected. The combined gravity of the two clusters changes their orbits, tidal forces can distort them, and a galaxy moving through dense intracluster gas can lose or compress some of its own gas. Those effects are important, but they are different from a star-on-star collision. In the large-scale images of systems such as the Bullet Cluster, the galaxies trace the collisionless component and remain more closely associated with the lensing mass than with the displaced X-ray plasma.
How collisionless shock waves heat the plasma
The shock is a moving boundary, not a solid wall
A shock front is a narrow transition where gas properties change rapidly. Ahead of it, the plasma is comparatively undisturbed; behind it, compression raises the density and pressure, and the bulk flow has slowed. In a cluster merger, the front often has a curved bow shape because one subcluster is plowing through the other’s atmosphere.
NASA reports that the shock associated with Abell 2146 stretches about 1.6 million light-years. That scale is possible because the intracluster medium fills an immense region even though its particle density is far lower than air. NASA also notes that cluster particles may travel 30,000 to 50,000 light-years before colliding. The shock therefore cannot rely on frequent direct impacts; electromagnetic fields and collective plasma processes do the work.
Compression raises the temperature
As the shock compresses the gas, kinetic energy from the bulk motion is converted into thermal energy. Electrons heat rapidly, while ions and electrons can take longer to reach the same temperature through slower energy exchange. The measured X-ray spectrum depends on density, temperature, chemical composition, and the instrument’s line of sight, so a single temperature should not be treated as universal for all mergers.
Why the shock can be difficult to see
X-ray brightness depends strongly on the square of gas density. A shock can be physically powerful yet faint if it occurs in a low-density region. Projection can also hide the edge when a curved front is viewed at an unfavorable angle. A clear surface-brightness jump, a matching temperature change, and evidence of gas motion together provide a stronger shock diagnosis than any one feature alone.

Why the gas glows in X-rays
Intracluster gas reaches temperatures of millions of degrees. At those temperatures, electrons move fast enough to emit high-energy radiation through thermal bremsstrahlung when they are deflected by ions. Highly ionized elements also produce spectral lines. The combined emission falls mainly in the X-ray band, allowing observatories such as Chandra to map where the gas is densest and hottest.

It emphasizes the baryonic plasma, and bright regions often indicate compressed gas rather than the location of the deepest gravitational potential. Temperature and surface-brightness maps can reveal a shock, a cool core, a stripped tail, or a bridge between approaching subclusters.
Where is the dark matter in a merger?
Dark matter does not emit, absorb, or reflect light in a way current telescopes can detect directly. Astronomers map it through gravity. A foreground cluster slightly distorts the shapes and apparent positions of background galaxies; measuring that weak-lensing pattern across thousands of sources reconstructs the projected mass distribution. Strong lensing, such as arcs and multiple images near a dense core, supplies a higher-resolution constraint in smaller regions.
In a merger, the lensing mass generally follows the galaxies and their dark-matter halos, while ram pressure leaves much of the gas behind. The separation is a dynamical test. If dark matter experienced a strong drag or frequent self-interactions, its mass peak should be displaced or broadened relative to the galaxies. Measurements of the Bullet Cluster and newer maps find no significant self-interaction signal at the sensitivity reported, although that result constrains particular models rather than proving that every possible dark-matter interaction is absent.
The Bullet Cluster: the clearest visual demonstration
The Bullet Cluster, also known as 1E 0657-556, consists of two clusters observed after a high-speed passage. Chandra’s X-ray image shows the hot gas as a pink component, including a distinctive shock and a dense region that has been slowed by ram pressure. Gravitational lensing places the dominant mass in blue-toned regions that are more closely aligned with the galaxies than with the gas.

This gas–mass separation matters because ordinary luminous matter is not merely hidden in another waveband: the X-ray-emitting plasma itself is visibly offset from the mass that bends background light. NASA’s Webb summary describes the separation as further evidence for dark matter and reports no significant self-interaction signal in its improved lensing map. Webb measured thousands of galaxies to refine the mass distribution; the dark matter remains an inferred map, not a direct photograph.
A 2006 NASA description called the Bullet Cluster collision “the most energetic event known in the universe since the Big Bang.” That wording is a historical description from that report, not a newly established universal ranking. The lasting scientific value is the spatial comparison of galaxies, gas, and lensing mass, not the superlative itself.
Other observed cluster collisions and what they show
| System | Merger stage or feature | Measured values | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| MACS J0025.4-1222 | Post-passage collision with a clear gas–mass offset | Each progenitor was almost a quadrillion solar masses; the clusters merged at speeds of millions of miles per hour | Independent evidence that hot gas can be slowed while dark matter and galaxies continue through the encounter |
| Abell 98 | Early-stage merger with a bridge between approaching clusters | About 1.4 billion light-years away; bridge gas near 20 million kelvins and cooler gas near 10 million kelvins; shock-heated warm-hot intergalactic matter estimated at 400 billion solar masses | Shows how shocks can expose otherwise hard-to-detect warm-hot intergalactic matter |
| Abell 2146 | Merger with two bright shock fronts | About 2.8 billion light-years away; a shock front about 1.6 million light-years long; random gas motions around 650,000 miles per hour | Provides a large, clear laboratory for studying collisionless shocks and turbulent gas motions |
These systems should not be collapsed into one “typical” merger. Abell 98 is an early-stage system, whereas the Bullet Cluster and MACS J0025 show especially clear post-passage separation. Distances, viewing angles, gas densities, and merger speeds differ, so their temperatures and shock signatures are not interchangeable.

Weak lensing: reconstructing invisible mass
Weak lensing averages tiny shape distortions in many background galaxies. The resulting mass map has lower spatial resolution than a photograph, but it covers the extended halo and does not depend on the gas being bright. Combining it with strong-lensing constraints near the cores improves the reconstruction where background-galaxy images are most distorted.
Comparing the maps
A merger interpretation becomes compelling when the galaxy positions, X-ray gas, temperature jumps, and lensing mass are modeled together. The offsets provide the test of non-gravitational dark-matter behavior. The same multiwavelength approach also prevents a common mistake: treating the brightest X-ray region as the location of all the cluster’s mass.
What cluster mergers teach us about dark matter
The basic inference is geometric and dynamical. Galaxies and dark matter pass through the encounter with relatively little drag, while gas is slowed. If the lensing mass tracks the galaxies rather than the gas, most of the gravitating matter is not behaving like the collisional plasma. This is why the Bullet Cluster became a prominent piece of evidence for dark matter.

The result is not a measurement of every dark-matter property. Lensing constrains the projected mass distribution, and the interpretation depends on the merger geometry, mass modeling, and uncertainties in the background-galaxy shapes. “No significant self-interaction signal” means that the data do not require a large non-gravitational interaction in the analyzed system; it does not establish that all dark-matter models with any interaction are excluded.
Why mergers matter for the missing warm-hot matter
Cosmological simulations predict that a substantial fraction of ordinary matter resides in a warm-hot intergalactic medium, or WHIM, spread through filaments and large-scale structures. The gas is too diffuse to shine brightly in many circumstances, making it difficult to inventory directly. A cluster merger supplies a natural energy source: its shocks compress and heat surrounding material, increasing the chance of detection.
In Abell 98, researchers reported a bridge with gas near 20 million kelvins alongside cooler gas near 10 million kelvins. The associated shock may have heated WHIM gas estimated at 400 billion solar masses. That estimate applies to the system and analysis described by NASA; it is not a universal amount of WHIM found in every merger.
Common misconceptions about colliding clusters
- “The galaxies crash like cars.” Most galaxies and stars avoid direct impacts because the cluster is mostly empty space. Their trajectories change through gravity.
- “Dark matter was photographed.” Lensing maps infer where mass must be; no telescope image directly records dark-matter particles.
- “The X-ray glow marks the whole cluster.” X-rays trace hot plasma, not the full mass budget. The dominant dark matter can lie elsewhere on the sky.
- “Every merger has the same speed or temperature.” Merger stage, geometry, density, and viewing angle vary. NASA provides system-specific values rather than one universal collision speed or temperature.
- “A shock requires ordinary collisions between particles.” Cluster shocks are collisionless. Electromagnetic fields and collective plasma processes mediate the transition because the mean free path is enormous.
- “Gas and dark matter always separate cleanly.” The Bullet Cluster and MACS J0025 are especially clear examples; other mergers can have overlapping or more complicated structures.
What a cluster merger looks like over time
The visible configuration is a snapshot of a process that unfolds over hundreds of millions to billions of years. Before core passage, two peaks in galaxy density and lensing mass may approach while a bridge of gas forms between them. During and after passage, the gas can lag behind, producing shock fronts and X-ray tails. Later, turbulence decays and the system may settle into a more regular, single cluster, although substructure can persist.

Quick Recap
What to remember
- A cluster merger is a gravitational encounter involving galaxies, hot plasma, and dark matter, and those components do not behave alike.
- The diffuse gas is the part that directly collides: ram pressure slows it, and supersonic motion drives collisionless shocks.
- Compression and heating make the plasma shine in X-rays, while optical and near-infrared images locate galaxies.
- Gravitational lensing reveals the projected mass dominated by dark matter, allowing astronomers to measure gas–mass offsets.
- The Bullet Cluster’s separation of X-ray gas from lensing mass is strong evidence for dark matter with weak self-interaction in the observed system.
- Early-stage systems such as Abell 98 show that merger shocks can illuminate warm-hot intergalactic matter that is otherwise difficult to detect.
