When an Office version reaches end of support, Microsoft stops providing technical support, bug fixes, and security fixes for that version. The installed programs may continue to open and edit files, but they become unsupported software, and Microsoft no longer promises that they will remain secure, compatible, or reliable.
The date that Office support ends is not always the date that online-service connectivity loses support. Office 2016 and Office 2019, for example, lost supported connections to Microsoft 365 services on October 10, 2023, then reached Office end of support on October 14, 2025.

What Microsoft stops providing
Microsoft defines end of support as the end of its servicing and assistance commitments for that Office release. Its lifecycle guidance states: “After Office reaches its end of support, Microsoft no longer provides the following services:”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Technical support for problems with the product.
- Bug fixes for newly discovered defects.
- Security fixes for newly discovered vulnerabilities.
This is a support-policy change, not a guaranteed remote shutdown. Microsoft does not say that every installation will stop launching at midnight on the listed date. Instead, the release remains installed without Microsoft’s normal safety net. A failure that appears later may have no supported fix, and a vulnerability discovered after the deadline will not receive a security update for that release.

Does Office stop working immediately?
Usually, you should not expect an automatic shutdown solely because the lifecycle date has arrived. An unsupported copy may still launch, open local documents, print, and perform other tasks that do not depend on a changing online service.
Continued operation is not the same as continued support. Windows updates, cloud-service changes, authentication requirements, file formats, add-ins, and device policies can expose problems over time. Microsoft also warns that older Office versions may continue connecting to cloud services even though those connections are unsupported and may suffer functionality, performance, or reliability problems.
For that reason, “it still opens” is not a sound long-term plan for a business or anyone handling sensitive information. It only describes what may happen on the first day after support ends.
Important Office support dates
| Office product or family | Relevant date | What the date means |
|---|---|---|
| Office 2016 | October 14, 2025 | Office support ended. Supported connections to Microsoft 365 services had already ended on October 10, 2023. |
| Office 2019 | October 14, 2025 | Office support ended. Supported connections to Microsoft 365 services had already ended on October 10, 2023. |
| Office LTSC 2021 | October 13, 2026 | Microsoft’s stated end-of-support date; as of October 17, 2026, it is past that date and no longer receives Microsoft technical support, bug fixes, or security updates. |
| Office 2021 family | October 13, 2026 | Microsoft’s 2026 lifecycle listing includes the Office 2021 applications among products retiring on this date. This family listing is distinct from the commercial LTSC terminology. |
| Office LTSC 2024 | Through October 2029 | Microsoft lists this as the current on-premises option for commercial customers that are not ready to move to cloud services. |
| Microsoft 365 Apps | Modern Lifecycle Policy | There is no single Office-style retirement date. Support depends on using a supported app version and configuration. |
Lifecycle dates can differ by product name, edition, and servicing model. Check the exact entry for the installed edition in Microsoft Lifecycle before scheduling a replacement. Do not assume that a consumer Office 2021 license, a commercial LTSC release, and Microsoft 365 Apps follow identical rules.

Office support and Microsoft 365 connectivity are separate
Cloud connectivity has its own support policy. Microsoft says support for connecting Office 2016 and Office 2019 to Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and other Microsoft 365 services ended on October 10, 2023. The Office applications themselves did not reach end of support until October 14, 2025.
An older client might still authenticate or synchronize after the connectivity-support date, but Microsoft does not support that connection. Cloud-service improvements are not tested against those old clients, so a change can produce sign-in failures, missing features, degraded performance, or intermittent reliability without a supported correction for the old Office build.
This distinction matters when an organization says, “Our Office deadline is next year.” If its users rely on Exchange Online mail, SharePoint files, OneDrive storage, or another Microsoft 365 service, the supported-connection deadline may have arrived earlier. A local document test cannot prove that cloud workflows remain supported.

Windows and Office have separate lifecycles. Microsoft lists October 14, 2025 as the end of support for Windows 10. That date does not determine when a particular Office edition retires, and an Office upgrade does not automatically make an unsupported operating system supported.

Microsoft has described a transition arrangement for Microsoft 365 Apps running on Windows 10. Under that policy, security updates for those subscription apps continue through October 10, 2028. Feature updates and eligible Copilot support continue through Version 2608; after that, the apps remain on Version 2608 and receive security updates only until October 10, 2028.
The arrangement applies to Microsoft 365 Apps, not to Office 2016 or Office 2019. It therefore does not restore support for a perpetual Office release that has already retired. Microsoft also warns that running Microsoft 365 Apps on an unsupported operating system can cause performance and reliability problems.
Support cases have an additional limitation: if a Microsoft 365 Apps problem occurs only on Windows 10 and not on Windows 11, Microsoft may ask the customer to move to Windows 11. If that move is not possible, assistance may be limited to troubleshooting, and a workaround may not be available.
Choose a replacement based on how you work
Microsoft’s current guidance points organizations toward two broad directions. The right choice depends on licensing, connectivity, operating systems, and application compatibility rather than on the end date alone.

| Option | Servicing model | Suitable when | Decisions to make first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Apps | Subscription-based, ongoing feature and security servicing under the Modern Lifecycle Policy | Users need supported Microsoft 365 cloud connectivity and a continuously serviced desktop client | Confirm the subscription plan, identities, licenses, supported operating systems, update channel, network access, and deployment method |
| Office LTSC 2024 | Fixed on-premises release; Microsoft lists support through October 2029 | Commercial customers need a current installed Office release and are not ready to move to cloud services | Validate hardware and operating-system requirements, licensing, macro and add-in behavior, file compatibility, and the organization’s update and distribution process |
Microsoft 365 Apps is not simply “the newest Office license,” and Office LTSC 2024 is not a subscription replacement. They differ in licensing, update behavior, cloud dependencies, and administration. A decision should document which users need online services, which devices must remain on-premises, and which compliance or retention controls the organization must preserve. End of support alone does not establish that a particular replacement satisfies a compliance requirement.
A practical upgrade process
- Identify the exact installation. Record the product name, edition, architecture, installed build, activation method, and operating system for every affected device. Distinguish Office 2021 from Office LTSC 2021 and perpetual editions from Microsoft 365 Apps.
- Confirm the lifecycle date. Check the edition in Microsoft Lifecycle and note both the Office support deadline and any separate Microsoft 365 connectivity deadline. Treat a date that has passed as an active support risk, not as a future project milestone.
- Map dependencies. List Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and other cloud workflows; shared templates; VBA macros; COM or other third-party add-ins; document-management integrations; scanners; printers; and line-of-business systems that open or generate Office files.
- Review readiness and requirements. Compare each device with the target product’s minimum system requirements. Include processor, memory, storage, operating-system version, identity, network access, language requirements, and software-distribution constraints.
- Verify licensing and plan capabilities. For Microsoft 365 Apps, confirm that the organization’s subscription includes the intended desktop apps and that users can sign in with the required accounts. For an on-premises deployment, confirm the Office LTSC 2024 license and activation method before removing the old release.
- Build a representative pilot. Test typical users as well as the most complicated spreadsheets, presentations, templates, macros, add-ins, and document workflows. Include offline work, shared files, printing, PDF creation, authentication, and access to the organization’s cloud services where applicable.
- Choose the deployment mechanism. Microsoft’s guidance mentions Configuration Manager readiness tools, Group Policy or Intune CSP settings, and Office Deployment Tool packages. Select one approach that can uninstall the retired release, install the target build, apply the required policies, and report failures.
- Roll out in stages. Start with the pilot group, monitor sign-in and file compatibility, then expand by department or location. Keep a rollback or recovery plan for devices that depend on an add-in or macro that has not yet been remediated.
- Retire the unsupported copy. Remove the old Office release where policy requires it, revoke or reassign obsolete licenses, and update software inventories and support documentation. Leaving a retired release on a rarely used device still leaves that device outside Microsoft’s security-fix commitment.
What to test before changing versions
- Macros: Run business-critical VBA procedures with real files and permissions, not just a test workbook.
- Add-ins: Check vendor support for the target Office version and test installation, activation, updates, and interaction with security controls.
- Complex files: Open large workbooks, linked spreadsheets, custom templates, presentations with embedded media, and documents that use specialized fonts or fields.
- Cloud workflows: Test sign-in, mailbox access, SharePoint or OneDrive synchronization, co-authoring, and file sharing using the target client.
- Operations: Verify printing, PDF output, scanning, accessibility tools, language packs, offline work, backup, and recovery procedures.
- Administration: Confirm update channels, Group Policy or Intune settings, software distribution, reporting, and the ability to remove a failed deployment.

The programs open local files, but online features fail
This pattern is consistent with the difference between local application operation and unsupported cloud connectivity. Keep local work available only as a short-term continuity measure while moving users to a supported client; do not interpret a successful sign-in today as a Microsoft guarantee for tomorrow.

A security issue is found in the retired release
Microsoft’s end-of-support policy means that release no longer receives security fixes. The practical response is to move users to a supported Office version and operating system, isolate devices that cannot be upgraded, and use organizational security controls to reduce exposure while remediation is completed. No universal breach probability can be inferred from the lifecycle date.

An upgrade breaks a macro or add-in
Return to the pilot and isolate the failing component. Confirm whether the macro or add-in supports the target release, test the file with the same policies and permissions used in production, and work with the component’s publisher or internal developer. Do not keep the entire organization on an unsupported Office release solely because one dependency has not been updated; use a controlled exception while a replacement or fix is developed.
The device still runs Windows 10
For Microsoft 365 Apps, the stated transition provides security updates through October 10, 2028, with the Version 2608 limitation described above. It does not extend Office 2016, Office 2019, or Office LTSC 2021 support. Plan the Windows move separately and expect support assistance to be more limited when a problem is unique to Windows 10.
How to verify your next step
- Write down the exact Office edition and build shown on the device.
- Check that edition against Microsoft Lifecycle, including the date for supported Microsoft 365 connectivity.
- Decide whether your users require subscription servicing and cloud services or a fixed on-premises release.
- Confirm operating-system compatibility, licensing, macros, add-ins, complex files, and deployment controls.
- Pilot the target release before removing the old one, then deploy in measured stages.
The key result is straightforward: end of support removes Microsoft’s fixes and assistance; it does not promise an immediate shutdown. Treat any continued functionality as temporary, separate Office, cloud-service, and Windows deadlines, and move to a supported configuration after testing the dependencies that make your work distinctive.
