What Happens When an HTTPS Certificate Expires? Common Questions Answered

When a website presents an expired HTTPS/TLS certificate, browsers treat that certificate as invalid. A visitor may see a certificate warning, be blocked from continuing, or encounter a failure in an app or other client that connects to the site. If the hostname uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS), the browser must treat the certificate problem as a hard failure and will not offer a click-through exception. The website operator must renew or replace the certificate and deploy the replacement correctly.

What certificate expiry actually means

An HTTPS certificate has a validity period. During a TLS connection, the browser checks whether the certificate presented by the server is currently valid for the connection time, among other checks. Once the end of that period has passed, the certificate is expired even if the website, server, domain registration and hosting account are otherwise operating normally.

Expiry does not mean that every part of the website has stopped running. It means the server is presenting credentials that the client can no longer accept as valid for a secure connection. The browser therefore cannot establish the normal level of trust required for HTTPS navigation.

MDN summarizes the security consequence directly: “Web browsers prevent and block traffic to domains with broken certificates since the communication with the server would be compromised.” MDN’s insecure certificate documentation uses that wording in its explanation of certificate failures.

What visitors see after expiry

Browser warning pages

The visible result depends on the browser, operating system and the exact certificate failure. A visitor may be shown a full-page security interstitial, a warning in the address area, or an error message identifying the certificate as expired. The wording and buttons are not identical across browsers, so no single screen text applies universally.

The warning appears before the browser treats the connection as a normal, trusted HTTPS session. The visitor may be unable to load the page, submit a form or use a login flow until the certificate problem is corrected.

Client and application errors

Expiry affects more than people clicking links. Software that connects to the service—such as an API client, desktop application, mobile app, monitoring probe or background integration—may reject the TLS handshake and report a certificate or trust error. Microsoft’s SharePoint guidance explicitly warns that users can receive browser and client-application errors when accessing sites with expired SSL certificates: SSL certificates are about to expire.

An application can fail even when a human tester does not see the same page, because applications often have their own certificate-validation behavior and do not present a browser-style bypass screen. The practical symptom may be a failed request, unavailable integration or repeated connection error rather than a visible warning page.

Does an expired certificate expose the website’s data?

Expiry makes the presented certificate invalid; it does not, by itself, prove that an attacker has intercepted the site or that every request is readable in transit. The immediate, established effect is loss of certificate validity and the resulting warning or block. Treat the condition as urgent because users and software can no longer verify the service through a valid certificate, but do not describe expiry alone as automatic data exposure.

The safest response is to stop treating the warning as routine, avoid entering credentials on a page that the browser identifies as insecure, and have the service owner correct the certificate. Certificate validation exists to prevent clients from silently accepting an identity they cannot verify.

Can a visitor bypass the warning?

Without an enforced HSTS policy

Some browsers may provide an advanced option to continue for certain certificate failures. Whether that option appears depends on the browser’s policy, the error type and the host’s configuration. An option shown in one browser is not evidence that every browser will allow the same action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With HSTS enabled

HSTS tells a browser to use HTTPS for a host and to enforce certificate errors rather than offering a casual exception. MDN describes the Strict-Transport-Security header as a mechanism that makes these failures hard to bypass. Its TLS guidance also explains the security role of strict certificate handling: TLS configuration recommendations.

Host configuration Likely visitor experience Correct response
No active HSTS enforcement Some browser and error combinations may show a warning with an advanced continuation option; other combinations still block. Do not ignore the warning for routine browsing. Report the problem and wait for the certificate to be fixed.
Active HSTS enforcement The browser treats the certificate failure as a hard error and does not permit a normal click-through. The operator must renew or replace and correctly deploy the certificate.

Do not disable certificate checks, install a workaround certificate or train users to click through errors. Those actions remove the protection that certificate validation is intended to provide. Fixing the server-side certificate is the durable solution.

What the website owner must do

Microsoft’s operational guidance is straightforward: renew or replace the certificate to preserve uninterrupted access. The details vary by certificate authority, web server, reverse proxy, load balancer, content-delivery layer and hosting product, so there is no single installation command that applies to every deployment.

  1. Identify the affected public hostname. Check the exact name visitors use, including whether the problem affects the main domain, a subdomain, an API endpoint or an administrative hostname. A certificate valid for one name does not automatically cover every other name.
  2. Confirm that the server is actually presenting an expired certificate. Inspect the certificate served on the failing HTTPS endpoint, not merely the file stored in an account or certificate manager. Record its validity dates and the names it covers.
  3. Renew or replace the certificate. Use the certificate authority or automated issuance method selected for that service. If renewal is unavailable, obtain a replacement certificate that covers the hostname visitors and clients use.
  4. Install the replacement in the TLS termination point. The certificate may need to be installed on a web server, proxy, gateway, load balancer or another device that terminates HTTPS. Follow that product’s documentation for the correct certificate, private key and chain configuration.
  5. Reload or restart the relevant service when required. Some systems read certificate files only at startup or reload time. A successful renewal does not help visitors if the running endpoint continues serving the old certificate.
  6. Verify from the outside. Reconnect to the public hostname and check that the served certificate is the renewed one, is within its validity period and includes the requested hostname. Test the browser path and the important client or API paths separately.
  7. Check every endpoint that used the old certificate. A site can appear fixed while an API, alternate subdomain, regional load balancer or secondary environment still serves the expired certificate.

The crucial distinction is between obtaining a renewed certificate and deploying it. A certificate authority can show a successful issuance while users continue to fail because the old certificate remains active on one of the service’s HTTPS entry points.

Why the problem can remain after renewal

The renewed certificate is not the one being served

Certificate stores, deployment pipelines and production endpoints are separate things. If the endpoint still presents the old validity dates, the renewal has not reached the TLS termination point that visitors are contacting.

The hostname does not match

A certificate can be current yet invalid for the requested hostname. Verify the exact public name, including subdomains, rather than checking only whether the certificate is unexpired.

Only one server was updated

Services behind a load balancer or multiple regional nodes can return different certificates. Test through the normal public route and investigate any node or environment that still presents the old certificate.

Applications have a different failure path

A browser test may succeed while a client application still fails if that application reaches another hostname, uses a different endpoint or has a separate trust configuration. Reproduce the failing client request after deployment instead of relying on one browser check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service needs a documented reload

Some hosting products require an explicit reload, restart or binding update before the new certificate is active. Use the host or server vendor’s current procedure; the general remedy is renewal or replacement followed by correct deployment, not a universal command.

What visitors should do right now

  • Confirm that the address is the intended site and not a look-alike hostname.
  • Do not enter passwords, payment details or other sensitive information while the browser reports an invalid certificate.
  • Do not disable certificate validation or install an untrusted certificate to make the page load.
  • Contact the site owner through a separate, trusted channel and report the hostname and the exact time of the failure.
  • If the site belongs to your organization, give the operations team the browser or application error, hostname and whether the failure affects multiple networks or clients.

When HSTS is active, there is no safe browser-side bypass to recommend. The owner must correct the certificate, and clients should reconnect only after the endpoint serves the valid replacement.

How to prevent the next expiry

Automate renewal, then monitor it

Automation removes a calendar reminder from the critical path, but an automated job can still fail because of DNS changes, authorization errors, deployment mistakes or an unavailable service. Monitor both the issuance step and the final certificate served to users.

Use the timing guidance that matches the certificate type

Let’s Encrypt’s Integration Guide recommends checking ACME Renewal Information at least twice daily. As a backstop, it recommends renewing when one-third of a certificate’s total lifetime remains. For its current 90-day certificates, that works out to renewing 30 days before expiration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Guidance What it means Scope
Check ACME Renewal Information at least twice daily Run regular checks so a failed or pending renewal is noticed well before expiry. Let’s Encrypt integration guidance.
Renew when one-third of total lifetime remains Use the certificate lifetime to calculate a renewal window rather than assuming one fixed number of days. Let’s Encrypt’s stated backstop recommendation.
Renew 30 days before expiry For a 90-day certificate, one-third of its lifetime is 30 days. Specific to Let’s Encrypt’s current 90-day certificates; not a universal rule for every certificate authority or certificate lifetime.

Set alerts for the dates your organization actually uses, and include a test that checks the certificate presented by the public hostname. A renewal notification that never verifies production deployment is incomplete protection.

How expiry affects different users and systems

Ordinary browser visitors

They encounter a warning page or a navigation block. The exact wording, available buttons and visual severity vary by browser and policy.

Employees and customers using managed devices

Enterprise browser policies can be stricter than a personal browser. HSTS enforcement, endpoint security software or organizational settings may remove any continuation option, so an affected site can be completely inaccessible to the user.

APIs and service-to-service integrations

Automated clients commonly fail the connection rather than displaying an interactive warning. A certificate incident can therefore appear as an outage in an integration, job or monitoring check even while the web server process itself is running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mobile and desktop applications

Apps may cache endpoints, use a dedicated API hostname or apply their own validation rules. After renewing the certificate, test the application’s real endpoint and not just the marketing website.

Common questions, answered precisely

Is an expired certificate the same as an HTTP website?

No. The site may still be configured for HTTPS, but the certificate presented during the HTTPS connection is no longer valid. Clients can reject that connection even though the server continues listening on an HTTPS port.

Will every browser block the page in the same way?

No. Browser products and policies differ in their messages and in whether a particular error can be bypassed. HSTS makes the failure stricter for the affected host, but the exact screen still depends on the client.

Can clearing browser data fix an expired certificate?

Clearing cache or cookies does not renew a certificate. It can remove unrelated local state, but it cannot change the certificate the server presents. The owner must renew or replace and deploy the certificate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does renewing the certificate automatically update every server?

No. Issuance and deployment are separate operations. Each HTTPS termination point that serves the hostname must use the replacement, and the public endpoint must be checked afterward.

Is renewing exactly 30 days before expiry always correct?

No. The 30-day figure is the Let’s Encrypt backstop example for its current 90-day certificates. Other authorities and certificate lifetimes require a schedule based on their own validity period and operational guidance.

What is the one reliable fix?

Renew or replace the expired certificate, deploy it to the component that terminates HTTPS, and verify the certificate served for every affected hostname and client path. That is the remedy supported by Microsoft’s SharePoint guidance and the behavior documented by MDN.

A practical incident checklist

  • Write down the exact hostname, URL and time of the first failure.
  • Capture whether the symptom is a browser interstitial, an application error or both.
  • Inspect the certificate currently served on the public endpoint.
  • Check its expiration date and hostname coverage.
  • Renew or replace it through the responsible certificate authority.
  • Deploy it to every HTTPS termination point and perform any required reload.
  • Retest from a browser and from each critical application or API client.
  • Confirm that monitoring sees the replacement certificate, not merely a successful renewal job.
  • Review the automation schedule and alerting so a future failure is detected before the next expiry.

An expired HTTPS certificate is therefore a client-trust failure with a clear operational remedy: browsers and applications reject or warn about the invalid certificate, HSTS can remove any bypass, and the service owner must renew, deploy and verify a replacement.
