What Happens When a Windows Version Reaches End of Support?

When a Windows version reaches end of support, the PC normally keeps running. The change is that Microsoft stops providing routine security fixes, software and feature updates, and technical assistance for that release. The computer becomes progressively harder to protect and may develop software or hardware compatibility problems.

For Windows 10 version 22H2, support for the covered Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Enterprise 2015 LTSB and IoT Enterprise LTSB 2015 editions ended on October 14, 2025. As of October 16, 2026, the consumer Windows 10 Extended Security Update (ESU) period described by Microsoft also has a stated end date of October 13, 2026. Your next step is to identify the exact edition and release, check whether the hardware can run a supported Windows 11 release, and plan an upgrade, replacement or other supported transition.

What end of support actually changes

End of support is a servicing deadline, not a remote shutdown command. Microsoft’s own guidance says that PCs running Windows 10 continue to function, but no longer receive software and feature updates, security updates and fixes, or technical support after the applicable date.

That means an unsupported installation can still start, run desktop programs, connect to the internet and open existing files. It also means Microsoft is no longer committed to correcting newly discovered Windows vulnerabilities, fixing defects in that release or helping troubleshoot it through normal support channels.

  • No routine security fixes: vulnerabilities discovered after the deadline generally do not receive ordinary Windows patches for that release.
  • No feature or quality updates: new capabilities, reliability fixes and non-security improvements stop.
  • No standard technical support: Microsoft support may direct you to move to a supported version instead of troubleshooting the obsolete release.
  • Increasing compatibility risk: newer applications, drivers, peripherals and online services may eventually require a supported Windows build.

The risk does not jump to a measurable percentage on the end date. The official guidance does not provide an individual probability of compromise. The practical change is that the operating system no longer receives the normal stream of fixes that reduces exposure over time.

Windows 10’s dates depend on edition and release

Windows product names are not precise enough to determine support by themselves. Lifecycle dates depend on the feature release and edition installed.

Windows 10 version 22H2

Microsoft identified Windows 10 version 22H2, released in September 2022, as the final Windows 10 feature update for the applicable mainstream editions. For Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Enterprise 2015 LTSB and IoT Enterprise LTSB 2015, the listed support end date was October 14, 2025. Those systems no longer receive ordinary Windows 10 software, feature or security updates.

Older Windows 10 feature releases

Earlier Windows 10 releases had their own servicing deadlines. Before the overall Windows 10 date, installing a newer supported feature release was the normal way to continue receiving monthly quality updates. A PC that still reports an older release should not be assumed to have the same status as 22H2; check the exact release and edition.

LTSC and embedded editions

Specialized Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC), embedded and IoT products can follow different lifecycles. Do not apply the consumer October 14, 2025 date to every installation that displays “Windows 10.” Record the edition shown in Windows and verify its lifecycle separately, particularly on industrial, point-of-sale or dedicated embedded hardware.

How to identify the version that is installed

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then About.
  3. Under Windows specifications, note the edition, version and OS build.
  4. Alternatively, press Windows key + R, enter winver, and select OK to display the release information.

Write down whether the machine is Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, LTSC or another edition, along with the feature version (such as 22H2). That information determines which lifecycle date and transition choices apply.

What happens to security after support ends

The central problem is the missing operating-system fixes. Windows is a large collection of components, including the kernel, networking, authentication, printing, storage and media subsystems. New vulnerabilities can be found in any of them after a release stops receiving updates. An unsupported release may remain exposed because Microsoft is no longer issuing the normal patches for it.

Antivirus and endpoint-security software can still detect some malicious files or behavior, but it cannot replace a Windows security update that repairs a vulnerable system component. Microsoft’s consumer ESU guidance specifically warns that antivirus by itself is not enough to compensate for missing operating-system updates.

Continuing to use an unsupported PC is therefore a risk-management decision, not an immediate failure. Avoid sensitive activity on a machine that cannot be brought back into support, keep important data backed up, and treat any temporary use as a bridge to migration rather than a permanent plan.

Will applications and accessories stop working?

There is no single shutdown date for every application. Existing programs often continue to launch, but their vendors may eventually require a newer Windows build. Browser, security, accounting, creative and business applications can independently end support for an old operating system. New printers, scanners, graphics hardware and other peripherals may also ship only with drivers for supported Windows releases.

Application support is separate from Windows support. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps continue to run on Windows 10 and receive security updates there through October 10, 2028. That commitment does not restore Windows 10 security fixes or Microsoft technical support; it only describes the application update policy. Microsoft also states that Office 2016 and Office 2019 support has ended, while Office 2021 and Office 2024 continue to run on Windows 10 but are unsupported on that operating system. Check the exact Office product and licence before planning a move.

Compatibility can therefore erode gradually. A program that works today may continue to work for years, but a future version, plug-in or driver may refuse installation. Keeping a supported operating system avoids making every application decision around an obsolete platform.

What choices do you have?

There are three practical paths. The right one depends on hardware eligibility, how long you need the device, the sensitivity of the work and the cost of disruption.

Path Eligibility Security coverage Cost and disruption Time horizon
Upgrade the existing PC to a supported Windows 11 release Windows 10 version 22H2 device must meet Windows 11 requirements and receive the Windows Update offer Routine quality and security updates while the installed Windows 11 release and edition remain supported Microsoft describes the upgrade as free for eligible Windows 10 PCs; plan a backup and possible application or driver checks Depends on the Windows 11 release and edition lifecycle
Replace the computer with a Windows 11 PC Useful when existing hardware is ineligible, unreliable or no longer adequate Supported Windows 11 servicing on the new device, provided it is maintained and kept on a supported release Purchase price plus time to transfer files, settings, applications and licences Depends on each Windows 11 release and the device’s usable life
Windows 10 consumer ESU Microsoft’s offer covered personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 devices in most markets; organization-managed and enterprise-licensed devices were excluded Specified critical and important security updates only; no feature updates or return to ordinary support Enrollment methods and availability varied by region. The cited offer included settings sync, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or a one-time US$30 payment plus applicable tax Microsoft’s guidance stated October 13, 2026 as the final consumer update date
Remain on unsupported Windows 10 without ESU Any device, but it is outside normal support No routine Windows 10 security fixes No upgrade cost, but rising security, compatibility and support risk Indefinite only in the sense that the PC may keep running; it has no supported lifecycle

Because the current date is October 16, 2026, the consumer ESU end date stated by Microsoft has passed. If you enrolled earlier, check the status shown on the device and Microsoft’s current terms; do not assume that a past enrollment or payment creates continuing coverage.

How to check Windows 11 eligibility

  1. Confirm that the PC is running Windows 10 version 22H2 and record the edition and build.
  2. Install or open Microsoft’s official PC Health Check utility.
  3. Run the compatibility check and review the specific reason if the result is negative. Requirements can include supported processor, memory, storage, firmware, security and graphics capabilities.
  4. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and look for the Windows 11 upgrade offer. Eligibility does not guarantee that the offer appears immediately on every machine.
  5. If the device passes, review application, driver, storage and backup requirements before selecting the upgrade.

Microsoft points eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs to a free Windows 11 upgrade. Do not treat bypassing hardware requirements as the default solution: an installation outside the stated requirements can have uncertain support and driver behavior.

Prepare before upgrading or replacing the PC

A supported transition is safer when it is treated as a data-migration project rather than a single button press.

  • Back up irreplaceable files: Use Windows Backup or another verified backup method, and confirm that important documents, photographs, project files and browser data can be restored.
  • Inventory applications: List programs you need, their installers, licence keys and account credentials. Check each vendor’s supported Windows versions.
  • Check peripherals: Confirm that printers, scanners, specialist interfaces and older accessories have Windows 11 drivers or a documented replacement path.
  • Plan sign-ins: Make sure you can access Microsoft, work, school and software-licensing accounts after the change.
  • Leave recovery time: Do not begin immediately before a deadline, trip or critical project. Keep the old machine available until files and workflows are verified.

How Windows 11 support works after you move

Upgrading once does not eliminate lifecycle maintenance. Microsoft starts a new support lifecycle with each annual Windows 11 feature update. Home and Pro releases receive 24 months of servicing; Enterprise and Education releases receive 36 months. The exact end date depends on the installed release and edition.

During that window, monthly quality updates include security and non-security fixes. Microsoft normally publishes Windows updates on the second Tuesday of each month. Keep Windows Update enabled, install updates promptly and check the lifecycle for the particular release rather than assuming every Windows 11 installation has the same deadline.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming the PC will stop on the deadline

End of support does not normally disable the computer. The mistake is the opposite: interpreting continued operation as continued protection. Use the functioning period to migrate while the machine and its files are still accessible.

Relying on antivirus alone

Antivirus can provide an additional defense, but it cannot patch Windows components. It should be part of a broader security setup, never the reason to postpone a supported upgrade indefinitely.

Confusing Office support with Windows support

Microsoft 365 Apps’ separate Windows 10 security-update commitment through October 10, 2028 does not extend Windows 10 itself. Treat the application and operating-system dates as two different decisions.

Using the wrong lifecycle date

Check edition, feature release and whether the installation is LTSC or embedded. A date for consumer Home and Pro cannot automatically be applied to a specialized deployment.

Skipping the backup

An upgrade can preserve files, but it is not a substitute for an independent, restorable backup. Verify the backup before changing the operating system or replacing the device.

When is replacement the sensible option?

A new Windows 11 computer is practical when PC Health Check identifies hardware that cannot meet requirements, when the existing machine is unreliable, or when migration effort costs more than the device is worth. Replacement also gives you a supported firmware and driver baseline instead of carrying old components into a new operating-system lifecycle.

It is not mandatory solely because Windows 10 ended support. If the current PC passes compatibility checks and still meets your performance needs, an in-place upgrade may avoid the purchase and reduce migration work. Compare the remaining life of the hardware, storage health, memory capacity, application requirements and the value of downtime before deciding.

What the decision means for a business or managed device

Consumer ESU terms do not automatically apply to company-managed or enterprise-licensed PCs. Organizations should use the lifecycle and licensing terms for their specific Windows edition, deployment method and support agreement. Inventory every endpoint, identify exceptions such as LTSC devices, test critical applications and schedule staged upgrades. A machine that is technically usable but outside organizational support can still create audit, incident-response and vendor-compatibility problems.

Bottom line

End of support leaves Windows running but removes the normal security and servicing safety net. For Windows 10 version 22H2 covered by Microsoft’s announcement, that happened on October 14, 2025; the stated consumer ESU endpoint was October 13, 2026. Identify your exact release and edition, back up your data, check Windows 11 compatibility and choose a supported upgrade or replacement. Treat any ESU coverage as limited security maintenance, not as a restoration of full Windows support.
