When a platform confirms artificial plays, it can remove those plays from public totals, withhold related royalties, take songs or playlists down, and notify your distributor or label. Depending on the service and the severity or repetition, the intermediary may warn or charge you, remove releases, or suspend your account. YouTube applies a separate fake-engagement system that can exclude traffic, issue strikes, remove content, or terminate a channel. A detection is not automatically a ban or fine: the outcome depends on the evidence, conduct, platform and history.
What platforms mean by “fake plays”
A fake play is a stream that does not represent genuine listener intent. Spotify describes artificial streaming as activity generated to manipulate its service, including the use of bots or scripts. Playing your own track repeatedly with the purpose of inflating its numbers can fall into the same category as buying automated traffic.

Common methods identified by the U.S. Copyright Office include bot farms, click farms, playlist stuffing and hijacked accounts. These terms describe ways fraud can occur; they do not prove that a particular artist participated intentionally. The Copyright Office’s October 7, 2026 notice of inquiry asks for information about prevalence and countermeasures. It is not a universal detection rule or a finding that any individual account is guilty.
Paid services that promise guaranteed streams or guaranteed playlist placement are especially risky. Spotify says those services violate its terms, and SoundCloud warns that paid promotion promising guaranteed plays or placement can breach its rules. Legitimate advertising can bring real listeners, but no legitimate campaign can guarantee a particular number of streams.

What happens first after a confirmed detection
Public counts are cleaned
Confirmed artificial streams can be removed from the numbers listeners see. Spotify states that public metrics in its app, including an artist’s monthly listener count and a track’s all-time stream count, are adjusted to remove confirmed artificial activity. Spotify also corrects popularity signals used for charts. As a result, a release can show fewer plays than it did previously, lose a chart position, or stop benefiting from recommendation signals.
Royalties connected to the activity may be withheld
Platforms can withhold royalties associated with confirmed artificial streams rather than paying them out. The adjustment may affect only the suspect activity, not every legitimate stream in your catalog, but the exact accounting depends on the platform’s investigation and the distributor’s report.
Artist dashboards may not match the cleaned public total immediately
Spotify says an artist can see a spike in Spotify for Artists data even while confirmed plays are excluded from public numbers or royalties are withheld. A message may appear in the release or audience page when there is a significant discrepancy. For royalty questions, Spotify identifies the royalty report supplied by your label or distributor as the most accurate record of what Spotify streams generated. Do not treat a temporary dashboard spike as money you are entitled to receive.

Spotify: possible consequences and review route
Content and distribution consequences
Spotify sends labels and distributors monthly reports about confirmed artificial activity. Your intermediary may respond with a warning or a fee. Spotify says its per-track charge to labels and distributors applies only when a track has very high rates of artificial streaming; the policy does not state a universal amount that every flagged artist must pay.
Depending on severity, tracks can be removed from playlists. Repeated or egregious manipulation can lead Spotify to remove content. A distributor or label may go further in flagrant or repeated cases by removing releases from streaming services or suspending the artist account. Those are possible escalation steps, not an automatic result of every anomaly.
How Spotify treats activity you did not authorize
Spotify acknowledges that bots can drive streams against an artist’s wishes or without the artist’s knowledge. If you believe the activity was legitimate or unauthorized, provide your distributor or label with details of the promotion you actually ran. The distributor or label can work with Spotify to request a review. This is an escalation path, not a promise that Spotify will reverse a finding.

You can also report a suspicious playlist through Spotify’s official reporting route. A playlist that suddenly sends unusual traffic may have been manipulated without your involvement; reporting it creates a record and allows the platform to investigate.
SoundCloud: catalog and payout risks
SoundCloud’s warning is broad: if SoundCloud or another platform finds that you, or a service you used, generated fake streams, your entire catalog could be taken down. Artificial activity can also result in individual track removal and fees that reduce payouts. SoundCloud specifically says, “Playlist placement can’t be bought.” A service that sells guaranteed placement therefore creates risk even if you did not personally operate a bot.
SoundCloud’s public guidance does not establish a standard appeal timetable or a universal fee amount. If you receive a notice, preserve it and contact the distributor, label or platform support channel identified in the notice. Explain which promotion was authorized, which provider was involved and when the traffic appeared.

YouTube is a separate enforcement system
YouTube’s fake-engagement policy covers artificial views, likes, comments and other page traffic, not just music streams. YouTube states that artificial page traffic will not count and can lead to strikes on an account. Policy-violating content may be removed.
Warning and strike sequence
- A first Community Guidelines violation will likely result in a warning.
- Three strikes within a 90-day period may lead to channel termination.
- YouTube may terminate a channel or account after repeated violations, one severe abuse case, or when a channel is dedicated to a policy violation.
Hiring a promoter does not protect a channel if the promoter uses prohibited methods. YouTube can evaluate the traffic and the channel’s conduct rather than accepting the fact that an outside contractor was paid. This process should not be conflated with Spotify’s distributor reports or SoundCloud’s catalog rules.

What to do if you believe the activity was legitimate or unauthorized
- Stop the risky service. Cancel any provider promising guaranteed streams, guaranteed playlist placement or automated engagement. Do not buy another campaign to compensate for the missing plays.
- Preserve the evidence. Save the platform notice, dates of the spike, campaign invoices, ad settings, playlist URLs, contracts, emails and messages with promoters. Keep copies of dashboard screenshots and royalty statements before data changes.
- Build a concise timeline. Record when a legitimate campaign started, which territories or audiences it targeted, when unusual activity appeared and when you stopped the provider. Separate actions you authorized from traffic you cannot explain.
- Contact your distributor or label. Send the timeline and supporting records through the official account contact. Ask it to submit the information to the platform for review. A distributor can explain its own warning, fee or takedown policy, which may be stricter than the platform’s public wording.
- Report suspicious playlists or accounts. Use the platform’s official reporting form rather than contacting the playlist owner or attempting to retaliate with more traffic. State that the activity appears unauthorized and include the relevant release and dates.
- Check the correct accounting record. For Spotify royalty questions, use the royalty report from your label or distributor. Compare it with cleaned public metrics only after the affected reporting period has closed.
- Follow the notice’s deadline. If a platform or intermediary gives a response window, submit the evidence within it and keep a copy of everything sent. Do not assume that silence means the flag has been removed.
These steps request a review; they cannot guarantee reinstatement, restored plays or payment. Platforms generally do not disclose every signal in their fraud systems, so an artist cannot reliably self-diagnose a flag from a single geographic spike, listener graph or dashboard change.
What not to do after a flag
- Do not keep using the same provider while an investigation is open.
- Do not create replacement accounts or re-upload the same release to evade a takedown.
- Do not ask fans to stream continuously, use scripts, rotate accounts or otherwise manufacture activity.
- Do not delete records that could show a campaign was legitimate.
- Do not assume an outside promoter’s contract transfers platform responsibility away from your account.
Attempts to conceal or repeat the conduct can turn an isolated investigation into a pattern, increasing the chance of escalation under platform or distributor rules.
How common is fake streaming?
A Centre national de la musique release published January 16, 2023 reported detected fraud equal to roughly 1% to 3% of streams on participating platforms in France in 2021. It also described that range as approximately 1 to 3 billion detected fraudulent streams in relation to market figures. The estimate came from data supplied by participating platforms and distributors; it is historical, limited to France and those participants, and is not a current worldwide rate.
No reliable current global percentage or user-level probability of being flagged has been established. A platform’s detection of your account therefore cannot be interpreted using a universal “safe” threshold. Policies, reporting arrangements and distributor practices can change, so rely on the current notice and the applicable platform guidance when handling a live case.

Automated systems evaluate traffic patterns at scale. A real campaign can coincide with unusual listener geography, a sudden playlist referral or a large burst from a single source. That coincidence does not prove fraud, but it can make contemporaneous records valuable. Keep the ad receipt, targeting settings, dates, creative, playlist outreach and promoter correspondence for each campaign.
Evidence should explain how listeners were reached, not merely assert that they were real. For example, identify an ad campaign’s audience and run dates, or show that a curator contacted you without promising a number of plays. Avoid claiming that every stream was legitimate unless you can support that statement.
The practical bottom line for artists
A confirmed fake-play finding can erase the visible benefit of the activity and the money associated with it, then create distributor, catalog or account consequences. Spotify focuses on cleaning metrics, withholding related royalties and escalating through labels and distributors; SoundCloud warns that tracks or an entire catalog can be removed; YouTube uses strikes and channel enforcement for a broader set of artificial engagement signals. If the activity was unauthorized, stop the source, preserve records, contact the distributor or label and report suspicious playlists. Treat the process as a request for review, not as an automatic reversal.
