Valve says retired games remain in players’ libraries, where owners can still download, install, and launch them. The store page may remain reachable by direct link, but the game is removed from normal store listings. Delisting stops new sales; it does not, by itself, erase an existing purchase.
That rule has important limits. A game can lose online features when its servers shut down, and Steam can remove access when a key or gift is revoked. Refunds are also handled under Steam’s normal refund policy unless Valve grants a case-specific extension.

What “delisted” means on Steam
Steam’s retirement process is designed for a product that a publisher no longer wants to sell. In its guidance for developers, Valve states: “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries.” The same guidance says owners can continue to download, install, and launch the title. - The game no longer appears in ordinary Steam store listings or search results as a product available for purchase.
- A direct link to the store page may still work, even though the purchase option has been removed.
- People who already own the game generally retain its library entry and the ability to install it.
This describes ordinary retirement from sale. It does not cover an entitlement that Valve has revoked, nor does it guarantee that third-party servers, authentication systems, matchmaking, or other online dependencies will continue to operate.
Can you still play a delisted Steam game?
Usually, yes, if you bought it or received it before the delisting and the entitlement is still attached to your account. Open Steam, select Library, choose the game, and use the normal Install or Play button. Delisting alone is not a license cancellation.
What happens after you click Play depends on how the game was built. A single-player title with no external dependency may continue to work much like before. A game that requires a publisher login, activation service, downloadable content server, or multiplayer backend may function only partially or may fail once that service is retired.

How to download or reinstall a delisted game
If the game is still listed in your account, reinstalling it uses the standard Steam workflow. No special archive or third-party key is required merely because the store listing disappeared.
- Sign in to the Steam account that originally bought, activated, or received the game.
- Open Library and search for the title.
- Select the game and click Install. Choose a Steam library location with enough free space.
- Let Steam download the available build. A delisted title can still receive updates if its publisher continues to publish them, but retirement itself does not promise future patches.
- After installation, launch it from the library. If it needs a separate account, launcher, or server, that dependency can determine whether all features work.
Steam does not promise that every historical build, downloadable item, or online feature will remain available forever. The retirement policy establishes library access for the game, while the technical operation of the product remains game-specific.
What to do if the game disappeared from your library
Do not assume delisting deleted your purchase. Steam lists account selection, filters, and hidden games as common reasons a title may not appear. Work through these checks in order:
- Verify the account. Sign out and back in with the Steam account that made the purchase or accepted the gift. If you use multiple accounts, check each one’s purchase history and library.
- Clear library filters. In the Library view, remove collection, category, operating-system, and installed-only filters that could hide the title.
- Check Hidden Games. Steam lets users hide titles; open the hidden-games view and restore the game to the normal library if it is there. Steam’s instructions are in Games Are Missing from my Library.
- Look for a revocation notice. A revoked key or gift is an access change, not a listing change. Steam may show a notification explaining that the entitlement was removed.
- Contact Steam Support if ownership still cannot be located. Include the account details and purchase or gift information Steam requests; do not buy a second copy before the account issue is resolved.
If Steam says an installed game is uninstalled
The files may still be on your drive even when Steam no longer recognizes the installation. Open Steam’s Settings, go to Storage, and confirm that the library containing the game folder is listed. Steam Support says that adding an alternate library folder through Storage Manager, then starting the installation process again, can let Steam discover existing files instead of downloading everything from scratch. Follow the detailed troubleshooting page for installed games appearing as uninstalled.

Do not delete the existing folder before Steam has checked it. If the files are incomplete or corrupted, Steam may download replacements; if the game’s external services have ended, successful installation still will not restore those services.
Why launching may fail even when installation works
Valve’s retirement workflow asks publishers whether a game depends on servers or other functions that will become unavailable and instructs them to explain what players should expect. That means “launch” in the library policy is not a promise of permanent multiplayer or account-service access.
Check the publisher’s final announcement, the game’s Steam news posts, and any in-game error message for the exact dependency. Common outcomes include:

- Single-player content continues to work, while matchmaking and leaderboards do not.
- The game opens but cannot authenticate because a required login endpoint has been retired.
- Only an offline mode remains, sometimes after a patch or configuration change.
- The client cannot start because an external activation service is mandatory.
There is no universal Steam switch that can restore a server that the publisher has shut down. A game-specific announcement is the authoritative source for whether an offline workaround exists.

Does Steam refund a game because it was delisted?
No automatic refund follows from delisting. Steamworks says normal Steam refund rules apply, although Valve may extend the option in particular circumstances, such as cancellation of a new game or promised content or features not being delivered. For free-to-play games, Valve may offer refunds where players did not receive the opportunity to obtain value from in-game purchases. Those are discretionary or case-specific situations, not a blanket delisting guarantee.
The ordinary eligibility test
Steam’s refund FAQ states that the usual request must be made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Playtime includes online, offline, and shared-library use. The current policy is described at Steam Support’s Common Refund Questions.

To request one, sign in at help.steampowered.com, open the purchase or product, choose the refund option, and explain the relevant circumstances accurately. A delisting can be part of that explanation, but it does not replace the eligibility review.

Steam says an approved refund can take up to seven days to appear. Refunds issued as Steam Wallet credit may arrive within 24–48 hours; international payment methods can take longer. The time begins after approval, not when you first submit the request. Details can vary by payment method and financial institution; Steam’s refund FAQ is the controlling reference.
What happens to downloadable content and purchases?
Delisting concerns the game’s store availability, while the continued operation of add-ons depends on the entitlement and the game’s technical design. Existing owners should check the game’s library properties and downloadable-content list. If an add-on requires a server, account validation, or an online item-delivery system that has been retired, owning the base game will not recreate that service.
Do not confuse a missing add-on with a revoked base-game entitlement. First verify the account, filters, and hidden-games list; then check whether the publisher has announced a service change.
A practical decision checklist
- Store page gone, library entry present: treat it as an ordinary retirement; install from Library.
- Library entry present, multiplayer broken: investigate a server or authentication shutdown, not a delisting-only problem.
- Library entry missing: verify the account, clear filters, inspect Hidden Games, and look for a revocation notice.
- Files on disk, Steam says uninstalled: confirm the library folder in Settings > Storage and restart installation so Steam can detect the files.
- Seeking money back: submit the request through Steam Support; apply the 14-day/two-hour rule and describe any undelivered promised feature.
- Key or gift revoked: follow the separate support path; ordinary delisting rules do not restore a revoked entitlement.
Bottom line for owners
A Steam delisting normally closes the door to new sales, not to people who already own the game. Your first checks should be the correct account, library filters, Hidden Games, and the game’s local files. After that, separate store access from server access and separate both from a revoked key or gift. Refunds remain a policy decision governed by Steam’s normal conditions, with possible case-specific extensions.
