What Happens When a Smart Lock Loses Power or Its Internet Connection?

A smart lock’s battery and its internet connection are separate dependencies. If the lock’s own batteries die, its electronic unlocking may stop, but a mechanical key, interior control, or model-specific emergency-power feature may still let you in. If Wi-Fi or the internet fails while the lock remains powered, remote and cloud features may stop while local Bluetooth, a keypad, fingerprint reader, or key continues to work. The exact result depends on the lock, its firmware, the installed cylinder, and whether a hub or gateway is involved.

The two failures are not the same

People often call any failed smart-lock command a “power problem,” but there are three separate points of failure:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The lock’s battery: powers the motor, sensors, keypad, fingerprint reader, and wireless radios inside the lock.
  • Your networking equipment: a router, bridge, hub, or gateway may need household electricity even when the lock itself runs on batteries.
  • The internet or cloud service: carries remote commands and status updates when you are away from the door.

A battery-powered lock can keep working during a household blackout while its router and gateway are off. Conversely, the router can be online while a lock with empty batteries cannot move its motor. Treat these as different troubleshooting paths.

What happens when the lock battery dies?

Electronic entry may stop

When the internal batteries are fully depleted, the lock may not respond to an app command, keypad code, fingerprint, or interior motor. The app can also show the lock as offline because its radio has no power. A remote command cannot revive a device that cannot power its electronics.

A mechanical key may still work

SimpliSafe says its Smart Lock can still be opened with the existing deadbolt key after the smart unit dies. This applies to that product and to installations where the key cylinder remains usable from outside. Retrofit devices and some replacement cylinders differ, so test the installed key before relying on it.

Some locks accept temporary outside power

Emergency power is not standardized. Xiaomi says its Automatic Smart Door Lock has a USB Type-C emergency charging interface on the bottom of the exterior panel; a power bank and cable can provide enough power to unlock it, after which the battery should be replaced. Lockly describes holding a 9V battery against exterior contacts on applicable models. TP-Link’s Tapo support also describes temporary power from a power bank for supported locks. A USB-C port, 9V contacts, or any other interface must be documented for your exact model; applying the wrong voltage or connector can damage the lock or simply do nothing.

Interior release can remain available

Nuki states that an empty battery prevents the lock from receiving commands, while its interior rotary knob remains usable. That is useful for someone already inside, but it does not guarantee outside entry. Nuki also notes that outside key operation depends on a cylinder with an emergency-and-hazard function, which allows a key to operate even when another key is inserted on the inside. Standard cylinders may not have that feature.

What happens when Wi-Fi or the internet goes down?

Local control can continue

A nearby phone may connect directly over Bluetooth even when the home internet is unavailable. Wyze says that, during a Wi-Fi outage, users can unlock manually with a key or connect to the Wyze Lock over Bluetooth to issue lock and unlock commands. Nuki similarly says a phone in Bluetooth range can control its lock locally when internet access is lost.

Other models may offer keypad, fingerprint, or touch-to-open entry that is processed inside the lock rather than in the cloud. Whether those methods work offline depends on how the lock stores credentials and on its firmware. A lock that validates every credential through a remote service may behave differently from one that stores codes locally.

Remote features usually fail first

When the internet is down, you may be unable to lock or unlock from work, receive live status notifications, view activity history, use voice-assistant routines, or run cloud automations. Wyze specifically says its Auto-Unlock feature will not trigger while the lock is offline. The door may remain physically secure; the unavailable part is the remote path to the lock.

A gateway can be the missing link

Some products use a separate bridge or gateway rather than connecting the lock directly to Wi-Fi. Kwikset says the Kevo Plus Gateway needs both power and internet for remote access. If either is lost, local phone-and-Bluetooth control remains available, but remote access does not. Nuki describes the same architectural distinction: internet control is unavailable during a power or Wi-Fi failure, while Bluetooth control near the lock can remain.

How a household power outage changes the answer

Most residential smart locks use batteries, so a brief electrical outage does not automatically turn off the lock. The outage can nevertheless disable the router, Wi-Fi access point, bridge, or gateway that supports remote commands. If those networking components are connected to an uninterruptible power supply, remote access may continue until its backup battery is exhausted. If the lock itself is wired or has a powered accessory, the lock may lose power directly.

After an outage, check which component is dark before changing batteries. A powered lock with a dead router calls for local entry or network recovery; an unpowered lock calls for its documented battery fallback.

Battery warnings and how much notice they provide

Do not treat a warning percentage or runtime estimate as a universal smart-lock specification. Xiaomi says its Automatic Smart Door Lock warns below 20% and estimates about three weeks of theoretical operation from that warning point. That is manufacturer guidance for that named lock, not a guaranteed interval under every temperature, usage pattern, or battery type.

SimpliSafe says its Smart Lock provides low-battery warnings for multiple weeks before the battery is fully exhausted. The support page, updated June 26, 2026, does not turn that statement into a fixed number of days for every installation. Replace batteries at the warning rather than waiting for the final cycle, especially on a door without a second entrance.

Prepare a reliable backup before you need it

  1. Identify the exact model and revision. Record the name printed inside the battery compartment or in the app. Similar-looking locks can use different emergency procedures.
  2. Read the manufacturer’s emergency-entry section. Confirm whether the fallback is a key, an interior knob, a USB Type-C port, a power bank, 9V contacts, or another method. Do not infer compatibility from another brand.
  3. Test the physical key with the smart hardware installed. Turn it from outside while the door is closed but not latched, then confirm that the key can retract the bolt. If the cylinder requires an emergency-and-hazard function, verify that feature specifically.
  4. Keep the required backup where it is reachable. A spare key can be held by a trusted person or stored in a secure location away from the door. If the manual calls for a power bank or 9V battery, keep a charged, compatible unit and the correct cable.
  5. Learn the local method. Pair an authorized phone for Bluetooth and practice issuing a local command with the router disconnected. Confirm how close the phone must be and whether Bluetooth must be enabled before opening the app.
  6. Replace batteries on the warning, not at zero. Use the chemistry, size, orientation, and replacement sequence specified by the manufacturer. After replacement, check that the lock reports a normal battery level and that the bolt fully extends and retracts.
  7. Protect networking equipment if remote access matters. A small UPS for the router and gateway can preserve connectivity during a short outage, but it cannot help if the lock’s own batteries are empty.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The app says the lock is offline, but you are at home

  1. Try the mechanical key or the keypad first if immediate entry is needed.
  2. Stand within the documented Bluetooth range, enable Bluetooth, and open the lock manufacturer’s app.
  3. Check whether the lock responds locally. If it does, the internet, router, or gateway is the likely problem rather than the lock motor.
  4. Restore router or gateway power, wait for it to reconnect, and then check the app status.

The lock has no response at all

  1. Use the key or interior release if available.
  2. Inspect the battery compartment for depleted or incorrectly installed cells.
  3. Apply emergency power only through the interface named in the exact manual.
  4. Replace the batteries after entry and test the bolt with the door open. If the motor strains, stops halfway, or the bolt binds, correct door alignment before locking it again.

Bluetooth works but remote control does not

This pattern usually indicates a network path failure: the router, bridge, gateway, or internet service is unavailable. Continue using the local method, restore the network, and verify that the gateway has power. Do not factory-reset the lock while you still need existing codes and access permissions.

How to evaluate a smart lock’s outage resilience

Before buying or installing a lock, compare the following capabilities in the product manual rather than relying on the word “smart”:

  • Entry fallback: physical key, keypad, fingerprint, interior turn control, or documented emergency external power.
  • Local operation: whether Bluetooth or another local protocol works without internet and the required phone distance.
  • Remote dependency: whether remote commands require a powered hub, bridge, router, and cloud account.
  • Battery notification: the warning method, threshold if stated, battery type, and replacement instructions.
  • Mechanical compatibility: whether the existing deadbolt and cylinder support outside key operation after installation, including emergency-and-hazard capability where relevant.
  • Credential storage: whether keypad or biometric credentials are stored in the lock and continue working offline.

A useful minimum is a smart lock with a physical key backup plus a second local method such as a keypad or Bluetooth. That combination reduces dependence on both a charged phone and a working network, but only if the specific model’s manual confirms those features.

What is not known about smart-lock lockouts

Manufacturer support pages explain how named products behave, but they are not independent comparative tests. There is no reliable cross-brand statistic establishing a universal smart-lock failure frequency or lockout rate from the information available here. Battery life, warning time, Bluetooth range, motor performance, and offline behavior can change with climate, door alignment, usage, firmware, battery quality, and installation.

The practical rule is therefore simple: keep a tested, non-cloud entry method and follow the exact emergency procedure for your model. A Wi-Fi outage should usually remove remote convenience rather than physical entry; a dead lock battery is more serious and requires the key, interior release, or model-specific emergency power described in its documentation.
