A dead battery is more serious: electronic entry may stop entirely, and the emergency method depends on the exact model. If Wi‑Fi fails, a keypad, physical key, or nearby Bluetooth connection may still work, but remote unlocking, notifications, and scheduling can disappear. Check your lock’s manual now, identify its backup entry method, and keep the correct replacement batteries available.
What fails in each outage
Smart-lock access is made up of separate layers: the lock’s battery and motor, local controls such as a keypad or key cylinder, short-range Bluetooth, your home Wi‑Fi network, the internet, and the manufacturer’s app or cloud service. One layer can fail while the others continue working.

Schlage Residential’s August 1, 2025 support article states that its battery-operated residential electronic and smart locks continue to function during a power outage. The same article cautions that communication and features relying on Wi‑Fi or cellular data may not be available. That distinction applies to the power source and communications path separately; it does not guarantee the behavior of another brand or model.
How a smart lock can work without Wi‑Fi
Wi‑Fi usually provides the path between the lock and remote services. It is not necessarily required for the lock to read a code, turn its motor, or accept a physical key. The exact fallback depends on the lock’s design and how the manufacturer implements Bluetooth.

Keypad and physical-key entry
Schlage documents that Encode locks can be operated with their keypad or physical key when Wi‑Fi is unavailable. A stored access code is processed at the lock, so entering it does not require an internet connection. A key cylinder, where fitted, is independent of the network as well.
Nearby Bluetooth control
Some locks use Bluetooth for a direct phone-to-lock connection. Schlage says its app can be limited to Bluetooth when an Encode lock has no Wi‑Fi, with fewer connected features. Yale says Assure Lock 2 with Wi‑Fi can connect to the Yale Access App over Bluetooth during a home Wi‑Fi outage; depending on the phone, the connection may take a few seconds.
Do not generalize this into “the app works offline.” Bluetooth availability varies by model, regional version, firmware, phone permissions, and whether the app requires an internet connection to authenticate an action. Stand close to the lock, enable Bluetooth, and follow the model’s support instructions rather than repeatedly trying a remote command.

Without Wi‑Fi, Schlage lists real-time notifications and access-code scheduling among the Encode features that are unavailable. Remote unlocking and integrations that depend on the internet or a cloud service can fail even while a person standing at the door can unlock the lock locally. A code change made during an outage may also wait for synchronization, depending on the model; verify the result at the lock before relying on it.

If the smart-lock batteries die
When batteries are fully depleted, the lock may have no power to illuminate a keypad, accept a Bluetooth command, or drive the motor. Schlage’s troubleshooting guidance says fully dead batteries prevent electronic operation on the cited Connect models. An app cannot revive a lock that has no usable power.
Use the model-specific emergency method
- Identify the exact lock and variant. Read the label, packaging, installation record, or the app’s device page. “Assure” or “Encode” alone may not identify the electronics or regional version.
- Check the manual for dead-battery entry. Look specifically for “emergency power,” “9V,” “external terminals,” or “mechanical key.” Do not assume a procedure from a similar-looking lock is compatible.
- Try the documented method at the exterior side. Yale says compatible Assure Bluetooth deadbolts can be powered temporarily by holding a 9V battery against exterior terminals, then entering the normal code. This applies only to compatible models.
- Use the mechanical key if your model provides one. Yale says some Assure models include a mechanical-key backup. Keep that key accessible outside the locked home, such as with a trusted person, rather than inside the house.
- Replace the internal batteries immediately after entry. Install the type and number specified for your model, close the battery compartment securely, and test locking and unlocking with the door open.
A 9V emergency-power terminal is not universal, and neither is a key cylinder. If your lock has neither documented option, contact the manufacturer or a qualified locksmith instead of forcing the escutcheon or applying power to unmarked contacts.
Low-battery warnings are an early action signal
Yale says its Assure Lock with Bluetooth provides battery warnings, including advance notification. Its FAQ gives an estimate of approximately one year with normal usage, and describes warnings beginning about one month before batteries die and continuing from approximately five weeks before replacement is required. Because the page uses both descriptions, treat them as approximate, model-specific guidance rather than a universal countdown.

What to keep ready
- The exact replacement batteries listed in the manual, stored in their package and within their usable date.
- A 9V alkaline battery only if your model’s documentation confirms exterior emergency terminals.
- The physical key, if supplied, stored where it can be reached without entering the house.
- The lock’s model number and manual saved offline, because a dead lock or network outage can prevent online access.
If Wi‑Fi goes down
First determine whether the failure is only your home network or whether the internet, cloud service, or the lock’s own radio is affected. A router outage can leave the lock powered and locally usable. A broadband outage can leave the router working but prevent cloud commands. These cases look similar in the app but have different remedies.
At the door
- Try the keypad with a known code. Pause between key presses if the lock indicates processing.
- Try the physical key if the lock has a cylinder.
- If the model documents Bluetooth fallback, stand next to the lock, turn on phone Bluetooth, and open the manufacturer’s app.
- Do not repeatedly issue remote unlock commands while the network is unstable; a delayed command can execute after connectivity returns.
What you should expect to lose
Remote unlocking from outside Bluetooth range, real-time activity notifications, cloud-based access management, scheduled-code changes, and third-party integrations may all be unavailable. The exact list is model-specific. Schlage explicitly identifies notifications and access-code scheduling as unavailable without Wi‑Fi on Encode. Yale’s Bluetooth fallback for Assure Lock 2 with Wi‑Fi is described as a nearby connection, not a replacement for every internet feature.
Restoring service safely
Confirm that the router has power, check whether other devices are online, and restore the network before changing lock settings. Once connected, open the app near the lock and verify its status. Test one local lock and unlock cycle, then confirm that any code or schedule you changed during the outage is present. If the app still shows stale information, force a refresh only after the lock has a stable connection; avoid factory-resetting a lock unless support directs you to do so.

If the app stops working
An app crash, sign-in problem, phone permission change, or cloud outage can remove app-based control without disabling a powered lock. The official guidance available for the models cited here does not establish one universal recovery process for every app, phone, firmware version, or total cloud outage.

Use a non-app entry path first
At the door, use the keypad code or physical key. If the manufacturer documents nearby Bluetooth control, enable Bluetooth and location permissions as required by the app, stand close to the lock, and retry. If another authorized household member has a functioning app, use the local method rather than sharing account credentials.
Separate phone problems from lock problems
- If the keypad works but the app does not, the lock still has power; troubleshoot the phone, account, Bluetooth permissions, and app service.
- If the app connects but the motor does not respond, check battery warnings, door alignment, and whether the bolt can move freely with the door open.
- If neither keypad nor app responds, suspect depleted batteries or a lock fault before reinstalling the app.
- If every authorized phone fails at once, check the manufacturer’s service-status information when you regain internet access; a cloud outage cannot be fixed by replacing lock batteries.
Reinstalling an app can remove local settings or require account recovery. Have the account email, recovery method, and lock programming information available before doing it. Do not factory-reset the lock during an access emergency unless you have a documented re-pairing procedure and a way to keep the door secure.

A battery-powered lock generally continues to receive power even when the house loses electricity. Schlage says its residential electronic and smart locks continue functioning during a power outage. However, the Wi‑Fi router, broadband modem, cellular gateway, or cloud connection may lose power or service. You may still enter with a keypad or key while remote commands and notifications fail.

Treat backup networking as an optional continuity measure, not as a substitute for local entry.

Prepare before an outage
- Record the exact model. Photograph the interior label and note the hardware revision, region, and installed app.
- Test every supported entry path. With the door open, verify a keypad code, physical key, and documented Bluetooth method. Test the emergency-power procedure only as described by the manufacturer.
- Store recovery information offline. Keep the manual, programming code, account recovery details, and a trusted contact’s number on paper or in an offline file.
- Respond to warnings immediately. Replace batteries when the lock reports low power; do not wait for the warning to become an outage.
- Keep spares accessible. Store the specified batteries and, where confirmed compatible, a 9V alkaline battery outside the locked area.
- Explain the fallback to household members. Everyone who may need entry should know whether to use a code, key, or emergency terminals, and which actions are unsafe.
- Verify after updates. After changing batteries, firmware, phones, or Wi‑Fi equipment, test local and remote functions while the door is open.
How to compare outage resilience between locks
Do not rank locks by brand name alone. Compare the precise model and regional variant on these points:

Published battery figures are not interchangeable. Yale lists approximately one year with normal usage for the Assure Lock with Bluetooth and up to three months for Assure Lock 2 with Wi‑Fi under typical conditions with Wi‑Fi enabled. Schlage’s “less than six months” language in a troubleshooting guide is a trigger for investigating Encode battery life, not an average or guarantee. None of these figures establishes a cross-brand smart-lock lifespan or failure rate.
A quick diagnosis at the door
- Keypad lights and accepts a code: the lock has power; investigate Wi‑Fi, internet, app, or account connectivity.
- Keypad is dark, but a 9V procedure is documented: apply temporary power exactly as instructed, enter the code, and replace internal batteries.
- Keypad is dark and a key cylinder exists: use the mechanical key, then replace batteries and test with the door open.
- Keypad works but remote commands fail: local operation is intact; check Wi‑Fi, internet, cloud service, or app status.
- Motor turns only with the door open: check latch and strike alignment before blaming connectivity; a binding bolt can mimic an electronic failure.
The safest assumption is that local entry and connected features are separate. Keep one local method and one dead-battery recovery method available, maintain the specified batteries, and verify the exact procedure for your lock before an outage makes the question urgent.
