What Happens When a Royal Navy Submarine Arrives at Its Home Port?

It depends on why the submarine is arriving. A boat reaching its home port for the first time may continue sea trials and prepare for service; a submarine returning from deployment may reunite its crew with family and friends before maintenance or training; a boat assigned to a major overhaul follows a longer engineering programme. There is no single public checklist or timetable for every arrival.

What happened when HMS Agamemnon arrived at Clyde?

The clearest recent example is HMS Agamemnon, the sixth Astute-class hunter-killer submarine. The Royal Navy reported that she arrived at HM Naval Base Clyde (HMNB Clyde), commonly called Faslane, on 2 October 2026, after sailing from BAE Systems in Barrow on 25 September. Submarine Flotilla personnel and senior officers welcomed the boat alongside. The report described a crew of around 100 Royal Navy submariners.

This was Agamemnon’s first arrival at her home port, not a return from patrol. She was still moving from construction and initial trials towards operational service. Sea trials were to continue over the following weeks and months, followed by operational preparation before she joined the operational fleet. The Royal Navy said her trials were assessing performance, manoeuvrability, speed and seaworthiness.

The milestones were specific to Agamemnon: her keel was laid in July 2013, King Charles III commissioned her on 22 September 2025, and she made her first dive at sea on the journey to Clyde. They do not describe a standard timetable for other submarines. Royal Navy: HMS Agamemnon arrives at her home port.

What does “home port” mean?

HMNB Clyde is the Royal Navy’s main presence in Scotland and the home of the core of the Submarine Service, including the nuclear deterrent and hunter-killer submarines. The Submarine Delivery Agency describes Clyde as the base port for the Faslane Flotilla, where routine submarine maintenance and dockings take place. HMNB Devonport, by contrast, supports maintenance, modernisation and refits for in-service submarines. An arrival at a home port therefore does not, by itself, mean a submarine is entering a major refit.

The King’s Harbour Master Clyde is responsible for safe and orderly passage through the waters of the Dockyard Port of Clyde. Public information does not set out a full harbour-entry, security or mooring procedure, so the precise arrangements should not be inferred from an arrival announcement. How is a first arrival different from a patrol return?

Type of arrival What it means What may follow
First home-port arrival A newly built or newly commissioned boat reaches its base as it moves towards service. Agamemnon’s October 2026 arrival is an example. Further sea trials and operational preparation; the sequence depends on the boat’s programme.
Return from deployment A boat comes back after an operational deployment. HMS Talent returned to Devonport in January 2014 after a five-month deployment. A welcome for crew may take place; maintenance and further sea training were planned in Talent’s reported case.
Transfer for major maintenance A boat enters a substantial maintenance or upgrade programme rather than simply arriving after routine operations. Engineering work may extend over distinct phases, as in HMS Victorious’s Deep Maintenance Period at Devonport.

The distinction matters because an alongside welcome does not reveal what work the boat will undertake next. In the Ministry of Defence’s account of HMS Talent’s 2014 return, around 100 family members and friends welcomed the crew. Some sailors received their “dolphins,” the badges signifying full submariner qualification. The report said a six-week maintenance period was scheduled, followed by further sea training. Those details describe Talent’s return, not a universal post-patrol routine. Ministry of Defence: HMS Talent returns home after five-month deployment.

What might happen after the submarine is alongside?

The next phase depends on the boat’s status and programme. A submarine still undergoing trials may continue testing and preparation for operations. After a patrol, a boat may have maintenance and further training. A major maintenance period can involve a much broader engineering effort.

For example, a 2025 Royal Navy account of HMS Victorious described a Deep Maintenance Period at Devonport with an afloat phase followed by a dry-dock phase. The work included capability upgrades and revalidation of safety-critical systems, coordinated by the Royal Navy, Babcock and the Ministry of Defence. It was an extensive overhaul, not the automatic next step after every home-port arrival. The Royal Navy account reported Victorious’s displacement as 16,000 tonnes and described a £560 million regeneration project; both figures refer to that specific account and boat, not to submarines generally. Royal Navy: HMS Victorious Deep Maintenance Period.

What can’t be assumed from the public welcome?

  • There is no published fleet-wide statistic in these accounts for what normally happens after a submarine arrives.
  • A family welcome is documented for HMS Talent’s return, but that does not establish a general visitor-access rule or mean every arrival is public.
  • The publicly described examples do not establish a standard maintenance duration, crew leave policy, harbour checklist or operational procedure.
