It does not instantly fall. A laser-powered drone loses its external energy source when the beam is interrupted, then normally switches to its onboard battery or another reserve bus. The flight controller should detect the missing optical power, reduce nonessential loads, attempt to regain a safe line of sight, return, or land. If the reserve is too small, the transition fails, or the battery runs out first, the aircraft can descend uncontrollably and crash.
There is no universal “time until it falls.” A quadcopter carrying a heavy payload in wind may have only a short controlled-flight window, while a lightly loaded aircraft with a substantial battery can remain airborne long enough to recover. The answer depends on the receiver, power electronics, battery state, tracking system, failsafe policy, payload and cooling design.

What the charging beam actually does
A laser-powered drone is not self-sustaining. The ground station remains the energy source: it aims a laser at a receiver mounted on the unmanned aircraft, and that receiver converts optical energy into electricity.

- Transmission: A ground transmitter sends a tightly controlled laser beam toward the aircraft.
- Reception: Photovoltaic or thermophotovoltaic cells on the drone collect the optical energy.
- Conversion: The receiver turns light into electrical power.
- Conditioning: Power electronics regulate that electricity for motors, avionics, communications and battery charging.
- Control: Pointing, tracking and safety systems keep the beam aligned and shut it down when operating conditions become unsafe.
In the Power-scaled Relay for Agile Drones (PRAD) demonstration, DARPA reported more than 800 watts delivered for 30 seconds across 8.6 kilometers (5.3 miles), with a receiver focusing the beam onto photovoltaic cells. That is a demonstration result, not a guaranteed performance level for every aircraft.

The exact sequence after beam loss
1. The optical link is interrupted
An obstruction, pointing error, tracking failure, transmitter shutdown or safety interlock can remove the beam. The interruption may be accidental, or it may be the correct response to a person, aircraft or other protected condition entering the hazard zone.
2. Receiver output falls
When the beam no longer reaches the photovoltaic or thermophotovoltaic receiver, beam-derived generation stops. The receiver cannot continue producing the same power from an absent beam; any energy already stored in capacitors or batteries is only a temporary buffer.

The aircraft’s power-management electronics draw from its onboard battery or reserve bus if one is available. A well-designed system can make this change nearly seamless. A less mature design may register a low-energy fault, brown out a payload, or reset avionics during the transition.
4. The flight controller executes a policy
After detecting the loss, the controller may keep the drone stable for a short period, reduce payload and communications loads, search for the beam, move to a location with clear line of sight, return to a designated recovery point, or land immediately. The correct action depends on mission rules and the energy margin.

5. The reserve is either recovered or exhausted
If the aircraft reacquires the beam or reaches a landing zone before the reserve is depleted, the incident can end as a controlled recovery. If reserve energy runs out first, motors lose the power needed for controlled flight and the aircraft may descend uncontrolled or crash.
Will it switch to battery power?
It will if the design includes a battery or reserve bus and its power electronics are configured to use it. A laser receiver generally supplies propulsion and avionics directly while also charging a battery, or it feeds a common DC bus that the battery supports. The switchover can therefore be automatic, but it is not guaranteed by the phrase “laser-powered.”
What determines a successful switchover
- Battery state of charge: A nearly empty battery may support only a brief descent or no controlled maneuver.
- Power-bus architecture: Separate regulated paths and adequate capacitance help prevent voltage dips when the beam disappears.
- Detection latency: The controller must recognize the loss quickly enough to change throttle, payload and navigation behavior.
- Motor demand: Hovering, climbing and fighting wind require far more power than a controlled descent.
- Payload priority: Cameras, radios, processors and other loads may need to be disconnected to preserve flight power.
A reserve is not necessarily intended to continue the original mission. In many designs it exists to buy time for beam reacquisition or a controlled landing, not to provide normal endurance indefinitely.
How long can it fly after losing the beam?
No single number applies. The available time is approximately the usable reserve energy divided by the aircraft’s instantaneous power demand, with safety margin removed. Both terms vary continuously during flight.
| Factor | Effect on post-beam flight |
|---|---|
| Battery state and temperature | Determines how much usable energy remains and whether the pack can deliver the required current. |
| Rotorcraft mass and payload | Higher weight raises hover and maneuvering power, shortening the recovery window. |
| Wind and flight path | Wind can increase motor demand and make a return-to-line-of-sight maneuver longer or impossible. |
| Receiver and power-conditioning losses | Less efficient conversion leaves less energy for propulsion or charging. |
| Failsafe policy | A system that lands immediately may use less energy than one that searches for the beam, but it needs a safe landing area. |
| Payload shutdown behavior | Shed loads can extend controlled flight; a payload that cannot be disconnected consumes reserve. |
For that reason, a published demonstration power level cannot be converted into a universal crash time. PRAD’s more than 800-watt, 30-second result describes delivered optical power under its test conditions, not the reserve endurance of another drone.

Why the beam may stop even when the drone is healthy
Laser power links are safety-critical and operate under constraints that ordinary wireless charging does not. The 2026 Aerospace study treats pointing, sensing and control as dedicated subsystems and identifies eye-safety, human-exposure limits and airspace restrictions as operating constraints.
Automatic safety shutdowns
A transmitter can be commanded to stop when a person enters a controlled area, another aircraft crosses the path, the tracking solution becomes unreliable, or a protective sensor reports an unsafe condition. In these cases, beam loss is intentional. The aircraft must treat it as a normal emergency input rather than assume that the transmitter will resume immediately.
Tracking and occlusion failures
Buildings, terrain, foliage, dust, atmospheric effects or a rapid attitude change can block or misalign the beam. A narrow optical link has less tolerance for pointing error than a broad radio link. The drone may still be mechanically healthy while the energy path is unavailable.
Transmitter or thermal limits
The ground unit can shut down because of an equipment fault, cooling limit or control-system error. Receiver temperature also matters. A 2021 feasibility study modeled net received power at 500 meters of 73.5 watts with gallium arsenide, 62.6 watts with cadmium telluride and 33.2 watts with crystalline silicon, while the laser module consumed about 600 watts. The authors proposed two-phase cooling because receiver temperature could become a limiting factor. Those are modeled values for specified assumptions, not a rating for every aircraft.
What the drone should do after detecting loss
A robust controller treats loss of beam as an energy-management emergency, not merely a communications warning. A practical response can follow this order:

- Confirm the event: Distinguish a brief sensor dropout from a sustained loss using receiver power, bus voltage and tracking status.
- Protect flight power: Disconnect or throttle nonessential payloads, high-bandwidth communications and auxiliary heaters.
- Stabilize: Maintain attitude and altitude only as needed to prevent an immediate obstacle strike; avoid energy-intensive climbs.
- Attempt reacquisition when justified: If the beam is expected to return and the path is safe, move toward a predefined line-of-sight corridor.
- Choose recovery: Return to a known safe area, descend to a designated landing point or execute an emergency landing according to mission rules.
- Abort the search: Stop looking for the beam when the reserve reaches the controller’s landing threshold.
The key design question is not whether the aircraft can hover briefly on battery. It is whether the reserve covers detection, decision-making, navigation and a controlled landing under the worst credible wind and payload conditions.
Designs differ in the ways that matter most
When evaluating a laser-powered aircraft, compare the complete failure chain rather than the laser’s headline wattage.
| Design axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Battery reserve | How much energy remains after beam loss, and what landing threshold is enforced? | Defines the recovery window. |
| Receiver and bus architecture | Does the battery support the propulsion bus without a voltage interruption? | Determines whether the transition is seamless or causes a reset. |
| Tracking quality | How quickly can the system reacquire after a brief occlusion or pointing error? | Shorter outages consume less reserve. |
| Loss-of-beam detection | Which sensors confirm the event, and what is the detection latency? | Delayed detection wastes energy and altitude margin. |
| Landing and recovery policy | Does the aircraft land, return, hold position or search first? | Policy determines both risk and energy use. |
| Payload demand | Can cameras, radios and processors be shed automatically? | Load shedding can preserve motor power. |
| Cooling margin | Can the receiver and laser operate without thermal shutdown? | Overheating can create a deliberate beam interruption. |
| Safety interlocks | What conditions stop the beam, and are those conditions tested in flight? | Safety events must be survivable, not unexpected crashes. |
Could it fall immediately?
Usually not, provided the battery or reserve bus is healthy and the transition works. Multirotors can remain controllable on battery power because the motors do not require the beam itself; they require electrical power. However, “not immediately” does not mean “for a guaranteed number of minutes.” A heavy aircraft at the edge of its reserve can lose altitude quickly, and a failed power handoff can remove the controller’s ability to command the motors.
If reserve energy is exhausted, the result depends on the aircraft. Some systems may perform a final controlled descent while voltage remains sufficient; others may lose flight control abruptly. There is no universal crash time because rotor configuration, battery chemistry, state of charge, payload, wind and software policy differ.

Power-beaming lasers can create serious hazards for operators and bystanders. An APS hazard-analysis abstract describes the need for laser-hazard zones and personal protective equipment. Eye-safety controls, exposure limits and airspace restrictions can therefore remove the beam at exactly the moment the aircraft is farthest from its recovery point.

What current demonstrations show—and what they do not
DARPA’s POWER program describes a future network of airborne optical relays and says the program is complete. On June 17, 2026, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory reported a dual-use laser demonstration that could transmit power and rapidly transition to a counter-unmanned-aircraft mission. NRL said the same laser could “immediately transition to counter a drone threat,” illustrating how one optical system might serve different missions.
Those demonstrations, along with the SBIR and STTR awards, show active development of custom transmitters, receivers, controls and power electronics. They do not establish a standardized consumer drone, a universal battery backup, or a guaranteed behavior after beam loss. Any specification must be read for its range, receiver type, delivered power, thermal conditions, safety rules and reserve policy.
Practical answer for a mission planner
Before authorizing a flight, require a written loss-of-beam procedure and verify it in the actual configuration. The test should interrupt the beam at different ranges, altitudes, payload weights and battery states; trigger the safety interlock deliberately; measure the time to detect the event; confirm load shedding; and document the landing margin. A system that cannot demonstrate a controlled recovery after an intentional beam cut should not be treated as fail-safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe bottom line is straightforward: losing the charging beam removes the external power input, not necessarily all electrical power. A capable aircraft switches to its reserve, protects essential controls and lands or reacquires the link. A design without enough reserve, fast detection, thermal margin or tested safety logic can lose control and crash.
