The consequences depend on the rules that apply to the player, the circumstances of the departure and which body handles the matter. A national association may discipline a player under its regulations or team rules; a club may also become involved if the player’s contract or a separate obligation is implicated.
What happens when a footballer leaves an international team camp without permission?
The player could face a warning, reprimand, fine, suspension or another disciplinary measure—but none is guaranteed solely because the player left camp. The governing association, applicable competition rules, team requirements and, in some cases, the player’s contract determine the process and possible outcome.

The reason for leaving can matter. A case involving a player who departed without approval may be treated differently from one involving a claimed injury, illness, safety concern or permission to leave. Whether the player was formally called up, what instructions were given and what rules apply are also relevant. The available sources do not establish an outcome for an unspecified player or country.
What disciplinary measures can FIFA impose?
FIFA’s 2023 Disciplinary Code lists measures its disciplinary bodies may impose on natural persons, including warnings, reprimands, fines, suspensions for a specified number of matches or period, and bans on football-related activity. The code’s list describes possible tools; it does not prescribe an automatic penalty for leaving an international-team camp.

The FIFA player-release provisions address obligations around clubs releasing players to representative teams and sanctions for violations of those obligations. They do not set out a universal player penalty for walking out of a national-team camp. The available reproduction of those provisions is from 2021 and has not been verified as the current edition.
What does a documented camp fine show?
A dispute decision reproduced by Dirittocalcistico.it records a club disciplinary case involving Modou Barrow at Çaykur Rizespor in 2020. The club imposed a €15,000 fine for leaving its camp without permission and not following the schedule, plus a separate €50,000 fine concerning non-participation or schedule compliance; the decision excerpt describes the combined amount as €65,000.
This was a club-employment dispute, not a FIFA fine and not a precedent establishing what a national association will do when a player leaves international camp. It illustrates that a club can discipline a player under its own rules in a club setting, but it does not determine the outcome of a national-team case.
Could the player’s country impose a separate consequence?
Potential consequences can depend on national law as well as association rules. An Associated Press report about Spain’s 2023 national-team dispute said that failing to answer a call-up could expose players to fines or a ban on playing for their clubs under Spanish sports law. The players disputed the circumstances and validity of the call-up. That report concerned attendance at a call-up in Spain; it does not establish a global rule or decide what happens when a player has already joined camp and then leaves.

What determines the outcome in a particular case?
- Call-up and team rules: Whether the player had been called up, accepted the call-up and was subject to specific camp instructions.
- Reason for departure: Whether permission was sought or granted, and whether the player cited injury, illness, safety or another justification.
- Applicable regulations: Which national-association, competition and employment rules govern the player and the incident.
- Who handles the matter: Whether the national association, club or another body has authority over the conduct at issue.
- Procedure: What process the applicable rules require, including any available appeal rights.
Without those details, it is not possible to say that the player will definitely be fined, suspended or barred from football. FIFA’s code shows the kinds of measures that may be available to its disciplinary bodies; the relevant rules and facts determine whether any measure applies.
