A national-team call-up selects a footballer for representative duty, but it does not automatically guarantee a place in a tournament’s final squad—or that the player will appear in a match. The player joins the team on the dates set for that international window or competition, then returns to the club under the applicable FIFA and competition rules.
What a call-up means
A national association has selected the player for a particular squad or period of duty. The call-up may be for an ordinary international window or for preparation for a major tournament. Eligibility and selection are separate: a coach’s choice does not, by itself, settle whether the player is eligible under FIFA rules.

For the rules governing player release and return, FIFA directs readers to Annexe 1 of its Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players. The applicable arrangements depend on the type of duty and competition, so there is no single reporting or return deadline that applies to every call-up. FIFA’s international match calendar shows scheduled windows and maximum matches per team; the page was last updated on 29 April 2026.

- The association selects the player. It communicates the call-up for the relevant squad or window. For a tournament, an early announcement may not be the official final squad.
- The player is released by the club. The timing is governed by the applicable international-window or competition rules, including the relevant FIFA provisions.
- The player joins the national team. They report for the association’s camp, preparation and scheduled matches. The exact itinerary varies by team and competition.
- The player returns to the club. The return timing follows the rules that apply to that duty; check the current regulations rather than assuming a universal interval.
How a tournament call-up can differ
A tournament may have its own release period, squad limits and confirmation process. For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA set the mandatory release period to begin on 25 May 2026, after players’ last official club matches on 24 May. FIFA allowed an exception, subject to its approval, for players taking part in specified confederation club finals through 30 May. These dates applied to that tournament, not to call-ups generally. See FIFA’s 2026 World Cup player-release guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Inspired by the world's largest soccer matchup, the adidas FIFA World Cup 26 soccer ball pairs design with performance. A seamless TSBE surface enhances touch. The butyl bladder ensures consistent shape retention for every match or practice session.
- TSBE TECHNOLOGY: Seamless surface for better touch and lower water uptake
- KEEPS ITS SHAPE: Butyl bladder for best air retention
- REQUIRES INFLATION: Ships flat, pump not included
- FIFA QUALITY AND OFFICIALLY LICENSED: Officially licensed by FIFA, the ball passed FIFA tests on circumference, weight, rebound and water absorption
For that World Cup, each association’s final squad was to contain 23–26 players, including at least three goalkeepers. Teams could announce squads earlier, but they would not become official until FIFA confirmation on 2 June 2026. FIFA also set restricted conditions for replacing a player after serious injury or illness. Those roster and replacement provisions are specific to the 2026 World Cup and should not be assumed for another tournament. Details are in FIFA’s 2026 World Cup squad-list guidance.

FIFA’s eligibility rules address nationality, residence, territorial criteria, prior appearances for an association and circumstances in which a player may change association. Updated guidance published on 10 September 2026 reflects jurisprudence through 30 June 2026. A player’s birthplace or a coach’s selection alone does not establish eligibility; a case involving prior international appearances or a change of association may require a separate assessment. Consult FIFA’s current eligibility and change-of-association rules for the relevant case.

What to check for a specific call-up
- Whether the selection is for an ordinary international window, a tournament camp or a final tournament squad.
- The dates in FIFA’s current calendar and the release provisions for the relevant duty.
- Whether an announced tournament squad has been officially confirmed under that competition’s rules.
- Whether the player’s eligibility is straightforward or depends on a change-of-association decision.
