If you close the Microsoft account linked to your Xbox, your games and Xbox profile are recoverable only during the 30- or 60-day closure period you selected. Reopen the account before that deadline and Microsoft says your Xbox profile, Gamerscore, subscriptions and purchased content become available again. If the grace period ends, Microsoft says the account is permanently deleted along with its data and content. Subscription time keeps running while closure is pending, and a cancelled or expired subscription must be purchased again.
The outcome depends on the account’s status
Closing an account does not immediately produce the same result as permanent deletion. Microsoft describes two distinct states: a temporary pending-closure period and deletion after that period expires. The state of the account on the day you try to play or recover a game determines what options remain.

The 30- or 60-day choice is a recovery window, not a promise that access will continue forever. The exact deadline shown for your account controls the decision, so use that date rather than estimating from the day you submitted the closure request.
What the closure grace period means for Xbox players
You choose either 30 or 60 days
Microsoft’s account-closure process lets you select a 30-day or 60-day period in which you can change your mind. During that period, the account is pending closure rather than permanently erased. The account remains on a path toward deletion unless you reopen it.

This distinction matters because the Xbox purchases are associated with the Microsoft account, not merely with the physical console where you previously played. Microsoft’s reopening guidance specifically names the Xbox profile, gamertag, Gamerscore and purchased content as items that return when the account is reopened.
The clock is not paused for subscriptions
Pending closure does not freeze subscription time. Microsoft says remaining subscription time is available after reopening, but time that passes while the account is awaiting closure is not restored. For example, if a subscription has 20 days left when you request closure and you reopen after 10 days, Microsoft’s guidance supports expecting the remaining period after those 10 days have elapsed, not a reset to the original 20 days.
If the subscription is cancelled or expires during this process, Microsoft says it must be purchased again. That rule is separate from the availability of purchased games: reopening can restore the account’s prior content without reviving a subscription that no longer exists.

If you have just scheduled closure, act as soon as possible. Do not wait for the final day, because a failed sign-in, unavailable security method or account mix-up can consume the remaining time.

- Identify the account you closed. Use the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox gamertag and purchases, not simply any Microsoft address you currently use.
- Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in. Use the same credentials that were used to request closure.
- Complete the security-code prompt. Microsoft’s reopening process requires the account-security verification shown during sign-in.
- Confirm reopening. After the code is accepted, the account is reopened rather than left in pending-closure status.
- Sign in on Xbox after reopening. Check that the expected gamertag and profile appear, then review your purchased content and subscription status.
Microsoft summarizes the result this way: “After you enter the code, your account will be reopened. Subscriptions, profiles, and content that were on the account prior to closing will be available to you, including rewards points, Xbox profile gamertag, Gamerscore, and purchased content.”
If the site does not offer the reopening prompt, check the deadline and the account address you entered. An account past its selected grace period cannot be reopened through the documented process.
What comes back after reopening
Purchased Xbox games and other purchased content
Microsoft explicitly says purchased content that was on the account before closure will be available after the account is reopened. That is the clearest answer to the question “Can I get my Xbox games back?”: during the grace period, reopening is the supported recovery action; after successful reopening, Microsoft says the purchased content is available again.
The statement establishes account-level availability. It does not provide a separate technical explanation for every console-license state, download history, installation state or offline-play condition. If a title does not appear immediately, verify that the Xbox is signed in to the reopened account and that you are checking the account’s purchase history rather than another profile.

Xbox identity and progression
The Xbox profile, gamertag and Gamerscore are specifically included in Microsoft’s reopening guidance. These are not described as newly created replacements; they are the profile details that were on the account before closure.
Subscriptions
A subscription with time still remaining can be available after reopening, but its remaining time is reduced by the days that passed during pending closure. A cancelled or expired subscription is not restored simply because the account is reopened; Microsoft says that subscription must be purchased again.
What changes after the 30- or 60-day deadline
Once the selected grace period passes, Microsoft says the account is permanently deleted. Its guidance also says the account’s data and content are deleted. The documented recovery route—signing in, entering a security code and reopening—no longer applies after that point.

Do not treat the console’s local storage, a game disc or a previously visible library as proof that the deleted account can be recovered.

Digital games and installed copies
The official material establishes what happens to account-associated purchased content when an account is reopened or permanently deleted. It does not establish whether an already-installed digital game remains playable offline after permanent deletion, whether every console license is checked in the same way, or whether a particular title’s local files can be used by another profile. Those technical cases require separate, title- and console-specific confirmation and should not be assumed.
Physical-disc games
The reviewed Microsoft account guidance does not explain how physical Xbox discs behave when the Microsoft account used on a console is deleted. A disc-based installation and an account-linked purchase are different questions, but the available guidance does not provide a definitive result for offline play, updates, downloadable add-ons or ownership checks. If this is your situation, preserve the disc and identify the account issue first; do not infer an outcome from the digital-purchase rule.

Write down the exact gamertag shown on the console or in Xbox account details. Look for the Microsoft sign-in address connected to that profile. Do not rely on a remembered email address if your household has multiple accounts, aliases or child profiles.
Check purchase emails and receipts
Search Microsoft purchase confirmations for the account address that received the receipts. Match the dates, product names and purchaser identity with the Xbox profile you are trying to recover. A receipt tied to a different Microsoft account will not identify the account whose closure is pending.
Separate an account problem from a subscription problem
If the profile and purchased games return but a subscription does not, check whether the subscription was still active when closure was requested. Microsoft’s rules treat remaining subscription time, cancellation and expiration differently; a missing subscription is not by itself proof that purchased games were deleted.
A practical decision path
- You requested closure today or recently: Find the displayed 30-day or 60-day deadline and reopen the account immediately through account.microsoft.com.
- You can sign in but see the wrong gamertag: Stop and verify the Microsoft address. Use gamertag details and purchase receipts before changing anything else.
- You reopened successfully but have fewer subscription days: That is consistent with Microsoft’s statement that elapsed pending-closure time is not returned.
- Your subscription was cancelled or expired: Reopening does not reactivate it; Microsoft says it must be purchased again.
- The deadline has passed: Microsoft says the account is permanently deleted and cannot be reopened through its documented process.
- You are asking about offline play or a physical disc: The account-closure guidance does not settle that technical question. Treat it as unresolved rather than assuming either guaranteed access or guaranteed loss.
Timeline: from closure request to final deletion

What Microsoft’s guidance does—and does not—promise
The supported promise is narrow but useful: reopen the account within the selected grace period, and Microsoft says the subscriptions, profiles and content that were on it before closure will be available. That directly covers the Xbox gamertag, Gamerscore and purchased content.
The guidance does not promise that subscription time is frozen, that an expired subscription returns, or that every offline, installed-game and physical-disc scenario will behave in a particular way. Keeping those limits in mind prevents two common mistakes: waiting past the deadline because you assume the account is only “temporarily hidden,” and assuming that a local game installation answers the separate question of account ownership.
If your account is still within its deadline, reopening is the only time-sensitive action. If the deadline has passed, first verify that you have identified the correct Microsoft account and gamertag; after that check, Microsoft’s published process provides no reopening option for a permanently deleted account.
