Your digital Xbox games stay tied to the Microsoft/Xbox account that bought them, and supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S saves can sync to another console through the cloud. Disc games ordinarily still need both the disc and a console with a disc drive. Which games and saves work depends on the title and the generations involved, so switching consoles does not guarantee that every game or save will carry over.
What happens to your games when you sign in on a new Xbox?
Digital games
Sign in to the new console with the account that purchased a digital game, then find it in that account’s library and download it. The game does not have to be installed on the old console for you to download it again. An account’s purchase history is not a guarantee that every title will run on every Xbox: the game must be available for that console and compatible with it. Subscription access is also different from ownership; a game available through a subscription may require an active entitlement.

Disc games
For a disc-based game, keep the disc: in the ordinary case it supplies the license needed to play. The new console also needs a compatible disc drive. A disc-free console cannot use a physical disc as its game license.
Xbox announced a Disc-to-Digital option in August 2026 for eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. Eligibility and benefits depend on the title, and the entitlement must be claimed and attached to the appropriate account. Do not assume a particular disc qualifies. For an eligible game, the physical disc continues to work as before; the new option is not a blanket conversion of every disc into a digital purchase.

Quick comparison
| What you have | What you need on the new console | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Digital purchase | The purchasing account, then a download | Console compatibility and whether access is a purchase or subscription entitlement |
| Physical disc | The disc and a console with a compatible drive | Whether the title works on that console; for Disc-to-Digital, whether the title is eligible and the entitlement has been claimed |
| Installed game files on the old console | Either a download or a supported transfer of the installation | Moving files does not transfer ownership or sync saves |
Will your game progress transfer?
Game saves are separate from installed game files. For supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S titles, cloud synchronization can make progress available on another console. Before leaving the old console behind, connect it to the internet and give each game you care about a chance to sync its current save. Then sign in to the new console with the same account and launch the game while connected. Sync support and cross-generation behavior are title-specific, so do not assume that every edition of a game shares one save.
There is an important generation boundary: Xbox’s backward-compatibility information says saves from original Xbox and Xbox 360 games do not transfer as saves to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Once a save is created on Xbox One or Series X|S, supported saves can transfer between those consoles through the cloud. Compatibility for an older game does not itself mean that its earlier-generation save will migrate.

How to switch without losing access or progress
- Check the game’s license. For a digital game, identify the account that purchased it. For a disc game, keep the disc and confirm the new console has a disc drive, unless the title is eligible for Disc-to-Digital and you have claimed that entitlement.
- Connect the old console to the internet. Open the games whose progress matters and allow supported cloud saves to sync before you stop using the console. If you cannot confirm a game has synced, do not treat the new console as the only copy of that progress.
- Sign in on the new console with the same account. Find purchased digital games in the account’s library and download them. Install or launch only titles supported by that console.
- Check progress in each game. Launch the title while online and allow any save synchronization to finish. If the expected save does not appear, check that you used the same account and that the title and edition support the save transition; avoid creating or overwriting progress until you understand the game’s sync behavior.
- Choose how to move large installations, if needed. You can download games again or use supported network transfer or an external drive to move installed files. These options save download time, but do not move a digital license or replace save synchronization. Direct-play support from an external drive varies by console and game.
What if other people use the old console?
Digital sharing is tied in part to the purchaser’s designated Home Xbox. Other users can access shared games on that designated console, so changing the Home Xbox when you switch devices can affect household access on the old one. Review the Home Xbox assignment before changing it if family members or other users rely on the shared library. Sharing a library does not transfer ownership to those users, and Microsoft’s sharing documentation also describes a one-game-instance-at-a-time rule for an account.

Why might a game or save be missing?
- The wrong account is signed in: A digital purchase appears with the account that owns it, not simply because the game was installed on the old console.
- The console does not support that title: Backward compatibility is limited to a supported catalog, and features vary by game. Check the exact title rather than assuming every older Xbox game will work.
- The disc is unavailable or there is no drive: A disc license ordinarily requires the disc and a compatible drive. Check Disc-to-Digital eligibility separately; it does not apply to every title.
- The save did not sync or the edition differs: The old console needs to be online for cloud sync, and save roaming is not guaranteed across distinct editions, generations, PC, or other platforms.
- You moved the installation but not the license or save: Transferring game files is a storage convenience only. Sign in for digital rights and use supported cloud synchronization for progress.
