But the digital access remains tied to that disc: Microsoft says you must continue to possess it, so selling or giving it away can lead to digital access being suspended or revoked.
What “convert to digital” actually means
This is an entitlement claim, not a permanent digital replacement for the disc. For an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game, insert the disc into a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game. Xbox says that is how you claim the digital entitlement. Its August 26, 2026 announcement says the feature covers most, but not all, disc-based games and is starting with thousands of titles, with more expected over time. It does not give a precise count or a complete, stable eligibility list. Xbox’s feature announcement

Can you still use the disc?
Yes. Xbox says the physical disc continues to work as it did before. Claiming the digital entitlement does not disable or erase the disc.

Do you need to keep the disc?
Yes. Microsoft’s Digital Goods Usage Rules describe this as a limited-access digital license conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may revalidate eligibility, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess the disc. The digital license cannot be transferred separately from the disc. That means you should not sell or give away the disc assuming you will keep digital access. Microsoft Digital Goods Usage Rules

Which digital benefits might you get?
Xbox lists Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming as possible benefits of the digital entitlement where supported. They are not guaranteed for every eligible disc or game. Play Anywhere is limited to participating titles, and Microsoft says a Play Anywhere game can be played on one device at a time. Check the individual game’s support before counting on PC play or cloud streaming. Xbox Play Anywhere

How to check a game before relying on the entitlement
- Check disc eligibility. Eligibility is title-specific, can change, and is not established for every Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc.
- Use a supported console. Insert the qualifying disc in an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game to claim its entitlement.
- Check the extra features separately. Confirm that the particular game supports Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming if you want those benefits.
- Keep the disc. The license depends on continued possession of the qualifying disc; it is not a digital copy you can retain independently.
