If a lifetime hosting company closes, your website may go offline, and you may lose access to its files and database unless you have independent backups. “Lifetime” is defined by the provider’s terms; it does not automatically promise perpetual hosting, data access, or a migration. Your domain registration is separate from hosting, so the domain may remain yours even if the hosted site stops working.
What happens when a lifetime host shuts down?
The host stores and serves your website. If its service ends, visitors may no longer be able to reach the site, and you may be unable to log in to download its content. Whether the provider offers a notice period, export window, migration, refund, or credit depends on the specific plan and agreement. The reviewed terms do not establish a universal recovery period or guarantee that a closing host will provide a copy of your data.

GoDaddy’s Hosting Agreement, for example, says customers are responsible for moving website or server content before termination and warns that content not moved may be deleted without a copy being provided: GoDaddy Hosting Agreement. That is an example of one provider’s terms, not a rule for every host.

Does “lifetime hosting” mean hosting forever?
No universal definition applies. Read the actual offer and terms: “lifetime” can describe a product or service’s commercial life rather than an unconditional promise to host your site for the rest of your life.

- LTHost defines “Lifetime” by the life of its hosting product or service, not the natural lifetime of the customer or the perpetual existence of particular infrastructure. Its terms also recommend that customers keep their own copies of important files, databases, and media. LTHost terms
- LifetimeVPS defines “Lifetime” as the shorter of the operational life of the host hardware or platform and the period the operators continue commercially offering the service. Its terms say the provider will endeavor to migrate active VPS instances where commercially reasonable, but do not make migration a binding guarantee. The terms were last updated June 3, 2026. These examples illustrate why the label alone is not enough to assess continuity. A company may discontinue a product, change infrastructure, or stop operating; the contract determines what it says it will do in those circumstances.
Will your domain still work if hosting ends?
Possibly, but the domain and the website are separate services. A domain is the address; hosting stores and serves the site. ICANN explains that a domain registrar can be different from a web-hosting or email provider, and registrants are not required to buy hosting from their registrar. If you retain access to your registrar account and DNS controls, you can generally point the domain to replacement hosting. ICANN: Registrars

Keep the registrant email address current and check renewal arrangements with your registrar. ICANN’s Expired Registration Recovery Policy (ERRP) addresses domain-registration notices and disclosure of renewal and restore fees; it does not require a web host to preserve your website files or arrange a migration. How to protect your website before access is lost
- Export the complete site while the account works. Save the website files, database, and media—not just a copy of the homepage. A backup held only inside the hosting account may be inaccessible when the service ends.
- Keep independent copies. Store them somewhere you can access without logging in to the host, such as a separate computer or external drive. LTHost’s terms specifically recommend customer-held copies of files, databases, and media. LTHost terms
- Check that you can restore them. Keep the credentials and instructions needed to restore both files and the database on another host. A backup is useful only if it can be accessed and restored.
- Secure domain and DNS access. Know which registrar manages the domain, keep its contact email current, and make sure you can sign in to manage DNS. Hosting and domain registration can be with different companies. ICANN: Registrars
- Read the plan’s exit terms. Check when data may be deleted, whether you must move content before cancellation, how backups can be downloaded, and whether the provider promises migration or only says it may try. Provider agreements differ. GoDaddy Hosting Agreement LifetimeVPS terms
What to check when comparing lifetime-hosting offers
| Check | What to find in the offer or agreement |
|---|---|
| Meaning of “lifetime” | Whether it means the customer’s lifetime, the service or product’s life, or a period tied to hardware, platform, or commercial availability. The reviewed providers use different definitions. LTHost terms LifetimeVPS terms |
| Export rights | Whether you can download files, databases, and media at any time, and what access remains after cancellation or discontinuation. |
| Backup scope and access | What is backed up, who controls the copies, how long they are retained, and whether you can retrieve them if the service ends. LTHost’s terms describe weekly automatic backups retained for up to 30 days; that is a provider-specific example, not an industry standard. LTHost terms |
| Shutdown and deletion | Whether the agreement requires you to move content before termination and when files or backups can be deleted. GoDaddy’s reviewed agreement puts responsibility for moving content before termination on the customer. GoDaddy Hosting Agreement |
| Migration | Whether migration is a firm obligation, an optional service, or only an effort the provider may make. LifetimeVPS’s terms describe an endeavor where commercially reasonable, not a binding guarantee. LifetimeVPS terms |
| Domain and DNS control | Whether domain registration is separate and where you manage renewal and DNS. ICANN notes that the registrar and host can be different providers. ICANN: Registrars |
| Refunds, credits, and fees | What the agreement says applies if the plan ends, and whether domain renewal, post-expiration renewal, or restore fees are disclosed by the registrar. ICANN Expired Registration Recovery Policy |
What if the hosting company has already closed?
- Check whether you can still sign in to the host’s control panel and download the files, database, and media.
- Contact the provider through its published support or closure channels to ask whether a data export or migration window exists. Do not assume one is available.
- If you have independent backups, arrange replacement hosting and restore the site there. Then use your registrar’s DNS controls to point the domain to the new host.
- If you cannot access the hosting account or an independent backup, the reviewed sources do not establish a universal way to recover the data. Check any notices and plan terms for specific export, retention, or recovery options.
