What Happens to Your Smart Home When You Replace Alexa or Google Assistant?

Replacing Alexa or Google Assistant does not transfer your smart home as a single package. Some devices can be shared through Matter, others must be connected again through the manufacturer’s app or a bridge, and routines normally need to be rebuilt and tested. Treat the change as three separate projects: devices, automations, and accounts or media features.

Leave the old assistant running until essential lights, locks, heating, alarms, cameras, and schedules work on the replacement platform. A careful inventory and one-device-at-a-time migration prevents the most common failures.

What actually moves when you change assistants

Your voice assistant is usually a control layer, not the device’s only home. A bulb, plug, thermostat, camera, or sensor may be connected through Matter, the maker’s cloud service, a local protocol such as Zigbee or Thread, or a bridge. The connection method determines what you can carry over.

Smart-home element Likely migration path What to expect
Matter-certified device Share it to the second Matter-certified app using Multi-Admin, when the receiving app supports that device type Usually faster than a full reset, but each participating platform needs a compatible Matter hub and support is category-specific
Works with Alexa or Works with Google Home device using the maker’s cloud Install or enable the manufacturer integration in the new platform Basic controls may return, while names, rooms, scenes, and advanced features may need reconfiguration
Device behind a bridge or hub Keep the bridge if the new platform supports it, then authorize the integration again The bridge, account, radio and target-platform support all remain dependencies
Routines, schedules and scenes Recreate them in the new platform There is no documented universal Alexa-to-Google or Google-to-Alexa routine import
Speaker groups, announcements, cameras and media services Set up and test each feature in the replacement platform These features are often platform-specific even when the underlying device connects successfully

Google says its ecosystem has more than 80,000 compatible Works with Google Home devices on its live compatibility page checked in 2026. That is an ecosystem scale claim, not a promise that every model or function will migrate. Amazon publishes its own list of Matter device categories; a category listing does not guarantee identical feature support for every product.

Why Matter helps—and where it does not

Multi-Admin sharing

Matter’s Multi-Admin feature lets one Matter device be commissioned into multiple certified apps. In practical terms, you can keep a device in the old home while adding it to the new one instead of deleting it immediately. The receiving app normally uses a temporary pairing code or QR code generated by the first app.

Sharing does not create two independent copies. The platforms refer to the same physical device, and its state is synchronized between them. Google’s documentation also notes that only one platform can actively control the device at a given moment. If two apps issue commands nearly simultaneously, the last accepted command determines the state.

Requirements for both platforms

  • The device must use Matter and the receiving platform must support its exact device category.
  • Each participating app needs a Matter-compatible hub. An existing speaker, display, router or other controller may qualify, but verify the current requirements before buying hardware.
  • For Google Matter setup, the home network needs IPv6 enabled. Google warns that setup can appear to complete and then fail during later control if IPv6 is unavailable.
  • Keep the manufacturer account, pairing code and phone nearby. Some products still require the maker’s app for firmware updates or advanced settings.

When Matter sharing is not enough

Support arrives on different schedules across platforms. A device may be Matter-certified yet expose only some functions in the receiving app, or the app may not support that category at all. A Matter light might provide on/off and brightness while a specialized effect, energy report or proprietary sensor reading remains available only in the maker’s app. Check the target platform’s current compatibility information for the exact device type before you start.

Inventory the home before touching anything

Write down the whole installation while the old system still works. This turns a vague migration into a checklist and gives you a recovery reference if a device disappears.

  1. List every device. Record the model, room, current name, physical location and whether it is safety-critical. Include bulbs, plugs, switches, thermostats, locks, cameras, sensors, appliances, speakers and displays.
  2. Record the connection path. Mark each item as Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread, manufacturer cloud, a bridge or hub, Zigbee, another local protocol, or an unknown method. Confirm the method in the maker’s app or manual instead of inferring it from the product name.
  3. Capture accounts and permissions. Note the manufacturer login, the household account used by the assistant, linked music or video services, and which family members have access.
  4. Export or photograph routines. Save each trigger, condition, action, schedule, room, device name and spoken phrase. Take screenshots if the platform offers no export.
  5. Mark dependencies. Identify routines that rely on presence detection, internet services, a bridge, a particular speaker, a camera event or a cloud account.
  6. Define a test list. Include a basic command for every room, a lock or alarm check, a camera view, a scheduled event and any routine that affects heating, security or water.

Step-by-step: move Matter devices

1. Confirm support and hubs

Check the receiving app’s current Matter list for the device category and confirm that a compatible Matter hub is online. For a Google destination, verify IPv6 on the home router and make sure the phone is signed into the intended household account.

2. Start the share from the existing app

Open the device details in the platform where it already works and choose the current option for sharing or adding it to another Matter app. The wording changes between app versions. The first app should display a temporary pairing code or QR code.

3. Add it to the replacement app

In the new app, choose the Matter-device setup flow, scan the QR code or enter the temporary code, select the destination home and assign the room. Use a clear, unique name that will not be confused with an old device entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Test locally and remotely

Turn the device on and off from both apps, then change a setting such as brightness or temperature if supported. Test while the phone is on the home network and again using the platform’s remote path. Confirm that state changes made in one app appear in the other.

5. Decide when to remove the old link

Keep the old association until the replacement works for at least one normal usage cycle. If you remove a Matter device from an app and will not use it elsewhere, follow the maker’s removal and reset instructions. Google’s documented move flow may call for a factory reset before adding a device to another home; do not reset indiscriminately because a reset can erase calibration, schedules or network credentials.

Reconnect devices that are not using Matter

For a cloud-connected product, install the manufacturer’s integration in the target assistant, sign in with the same maker account and authorize device access. Then rediscover devices, assign rooms and rename them. The old assistant may continue to show a stale copy until its integration is disabled.

Bridged devices require an extra check. The bridge must remain powered, connected to the home network and supported by the target platform. If the bridge exposes only selected device types, a switch or sensor that worked before may not appear even though another device on the same bridge does.

Some products use local Zigbee, Thread or a proprietary radio behind a hub. In that case, the radio network generally stays with its hub; you are migrating the hub’s integration, not pairing every end device directly to the assistant. If the new platform cannot use that hub, replacing the hub may require re-pairing each device, so postpone that decision until you have confirmed the target platform’s support.

Rebuild routines instead of assuming they imported

Official platform material describes automations inside each ecosystem, but does not document a universal transfer process between Alexa and Google Home. Plan to recreate every routine manually.

Recreate in a safe order

  1. Trigger: choose the voice phrase, time, sunrise or sunset event, presence change, sensor event or device state.
  2. Conditions: reproduce time windows, occupancy rules, modes and sensor thresholds.
  3. Actions: select the new device entries, set exact levels or temperatures, and preserve action order where it matters.
  4. Names and rooms: use one spoken name per device and place it in the correct room so voice commands address the intended item.
  5. Linked services: reconnect music, calendars, notifications, web services or security accounts individually.
  6. Test: run the automation from the app, trigger it by voice, and test its failure behavior if the internet or a device is unavailable.

Pay special attention to routines that combine platforms. A motion sensor may still trigger, while an announcement speaker, camera action or notification service is unavailable in the replacement ecosystem. Rebuild a simple version first, test it, then add optional actions.

Voice, media and household access can change

Device connectivity is only one part of the experience. Speaker groups, whole-home announcements, camera timelines, intercom features, music defaults and streaming accounts are controlled by platform-specific services. Validate each feature rather than treating a successful device pairing as proof that the entire experience transferred.

Check every household member’s phone access and permissions. Invite people to the new home, confirm which account owns the devices, and test voice recognition or personal results where used. Remove former household members and review linked services after the new setup is stable.

Comparing the replacement platforms

Decision point Questions to answer before switching
Device coverage Does the target support the exact model and the functions you use, or only basic on/off control?
Connection path Will the device use Matter, a maker cloud, a bridge or another protocol, and what happens if that service is offline?
Hub requirement Is a compatible Matter hub already present, and does it support Wi-Fi, Thread or the relevant radio?
Automation depth Can the target reproduce your triggers, conditions, schedules, delays, variables and integrations?
Household fit Can everyone use the phone app, voice controls, shared home and account permissions they need?
Network behavior Which functions work locally, which require internet access, and is IPv6 configured where required?

Google states that existing Works with Google Home products remain supported while Matter support expands. Amazon separately documents supported Matter categories for Alexa. Neither statement establishes feature parity for every model, so compare the exact functions that matter to your household.

Troubleshooting common migration failures

The device is missing from the new app

  • Confirm the exact model and category are supported, not just the product family.
  • Check that the required hub is online and assigned to the correct home.
  • For Matter, verify IPv6, Wi-Fi or Thread coverage, and that the phone is on the intended network during setup.
  • For cloud devices, reconnect the maker account and run discovery again.

Setup succeeds but control later fails

This often indicates a network or controller problem rather than a bad pairing. Check IPv6 for Google Matter installations, reboot the relevant hub and router, and test local control before testing remote access. Confirm that the device has not been removed from its original app or reset by another household member.

The device appears twice or responds to the wrong name

Rename one entry, assign rooms consistently and remove only the obsolete integration after testing. Avoid identical names such as “Light” in several rooms; use room-qualified names and check which app owns each entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A routine runs but skips an action

Open the automation and inspect each action’s target. The old device ID may have been replaced, a linked service may need authorization, or the target platform may not support that action. Split complex routines into smaller tests to identify the failing step.

Costs, resets and timing

There is no universal migration fee. Costs arise only if the target platform requires a new Matter hub, bridge or replacement device. Check existing speakers, displays, routers and hubs first; buying hardware before confirming compatibility can leave you with an unnecessary controller.

Plan the switch when you can observe the home for a full day. Keep the old assistant connected during the transition, migrate a low-risk plug or light first, then move critical devices. Do not factory-reset locks, alarms, thermostats or cameras until you have verified the replacement path and recorded their maker instructions.

Privacy and account cleanup after the change

Once the new platform has passed your tests, review the old account’s integrations and permissions. Disable obsolete links, remove former household members, revoke unused third-party access and check retained voice, camera and activity-history settings. Keep the manufacturer account if it is still needed for firmware updates, warranty service or advanced controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical outcome

A smart-home replacement is manageable when you separate Matter sharing, non-Matter reconnection and automation rebuilding. Matter can reduce pairing work, but it still depends on device-category support, a compatible hub for each platform and a correctly configured network. Everything else should be treated as a deliberate reconfiguration: inventory it, migrate it, test it, and only then retire the old assistant.
