When a League of Legends mode is retired, the first confirmed change is usually access to that mode’s queue. Your owned skins and champions are not documented as being deleted, but Riot does not publish one universal rule for every retired mode’s rank display or rewards. Those details are set by the retirement announcement and the season rules for that specific mode.
Riot’s retirement of Twisted Treeline shows why the distinction matters. Players could still earn that season’s end-of-season rewards through the mode before it closed, including the Victorious skin for qualifying players. Riot also said there would be no Twisted Treeline-specific chroma that year and planned small rewards for especially dedicated players after retirement. Those choices were part of that sunset plan, not a permanent promise for every future mode.

The short answer: queue access changes first
A retired mode is removed from the active game rotation or its queue is shut down. That is an access decision, not an automatic statement that every piece of account content disappears. Riot’s documented Twisted Treeline announcement described when the queue would be retired and how that season’s rewards would work. It did not announce deletion of skins or champions already owned on player accounts.

- Can the mode still contribute to the current season’s rank or end-of-season rewards?
- What happens to the mode’s historical rank information after the queue closes?
- Are there participation-based or commemorative rewards after shutdown?
Do not assume that a “yes” to one question answers the others. A mode can stop accepting games while its earned cosmetics remain in an account, or it can preserve a seasonal reward path while ending a mode-specific cosmetic.
What Riot documented for Twisted Treeline
Riot’s State of Modes announcement used Twisted Treeline as a concrete retirement case and stated that the mode would be retired at the end of that season. The notice made three reward decisions that are useful examples:
| Area | Documented Twisted Treeline treatment |
|---|---|
| End-of-season rewards | Players could continue earning that season’s end-of-season rewards through Twisted Treeline before retirement, including the Victorious skin for players who qualified. |
| Mode-specific chroma | Riot said there would be no Twisted Treeline-specific chroma that year. |
| Post-retirement recognition | Riot planned a few small rewards for the most dedicated Twisted Treeline players after the mode was retired. |
| Eligibility for the extra rewards | Eligibility would be based on games played before the announcement; Riot said the details would be announced later. |
This is a historical example of a sunset plan. It tells you what Riot chose for Twisted Treeline in that season, not what every future mode must receive. A later notice could preserve a reward, end it at a cutoff, substitute a different cosmetic, or add a new participation requirement.
Do retired modes delete skins or champions?
Riot’s cited Twisted Treeline announcement does not state that owned skins or champions are removed from accounts. The documented change concerns the mode’s availability and its special reward program. Therefore, the safe conclusion is that retirement does not automatically document deletion of account-owned cosmetics or champions.
That wording is deliberately narrower than an unconditional guarantee. The announcement does not establish a universal policy covering every future mode, every type of cosmetic, or every account system. If Riot ever changes how a particular item is granted, refunded, converted, or displayed, the relevant mode notice or support guidance would control.
Skins earned through the general account system
A skin you already own is account content, while a retired mode is a queue. The Twisted Treeline notice did not say that owning a champion or skin depended on keeping the queue active. It also did not announce a rollback of previously granted items. Keep those categories separate when reading a retirement post: removal of a place to play is not the same as removal of an item in your collection.

Mode-themed cosmetics
A cosmetic tied to a mode’s season or participation can have its own eligibility rule. Riot’s decision not to issue a Twisted Treeline-specific chroma in that retirement year demonstrates that a mode can lose a planned reward even while other season rewards remain available. A future notice may define a final date, a minimum number of games, or another qualification, so check the exact wording rather than inferring treatment from an item’s name.

Rank is the least safe area for a universal answer. Riot’s Twisted Treeline announcement preserved the ability to earn that season’s end-of-season rewards through the mode, but it did not establish whether a retired mode’s rank would remain visible in the client, be archived as historical information, or be converted into another queue’s rank.
That means a rank associated with a retiring mode should be read through two documents: the mode’s retirement notice and the season’s ranked-reward rules. The first tells you when the queue stops accepting games and whether any final competitive window remains. The second tells you what qualification is required for end-of-season rewards. Neither document should be silently generalized to a different mode or season.
Rank you have already earned
The cited announcement does not promise permanent display of a Twisted Treeline rank. It also does not say that such a rank is erased. Treat the record as mode-specific historical information unless Riot explicitly explains a continuing display or archival location. Do not assume that a retired queue’s rating can be used to seed, replace, or transfer into another queue.
Rank still in progress when closure is announced
Only the retirement notice can tell you whether games played before the cutoff remain eligible and whether the season’s normal qualification rules still apply. In the Twisted Treeline example, Riot explicitly allowed the mode to contribute to that season’s end-of-season rewards before shutdown. That permission does not prove that every unfinished placement, promotion series, or rating calculation in another retiring mode will be handled the same way.

Can you still earn rewards before the mode closes?
Sometimes. Twisted Treeline players could still earn that season’s end-of-season rewards through the mode before retirement, and qualifying players could receive the Victorious skin. The announcement therefore created a final opportunity rather than cutting off all reward progress immediately.

Whether a future mode gets the same opportunity depends on its own announcement. Check four details in order:
- Final queue date: identify the last date and time on which a completed game can count.
- Eligible reward types: verify whether the notice includes end-of-season rewards, a mode-specific cosmetic, or both.
- Qualification threshold: read the season’s requirements for the reward; access to the queue alone is not qualification.
- Cutoff timing: allow for the difference between starting a game before the deadline and having the result recorded before the deadline if Riot specifies one.
For Twisted Treeline, the important distinction was that normal season rewards remained earnable while a special mode-specific chroma was not being issued. A player who qualified for the Victorious skin therefore had a documented reward path, but could not assume that every planned Twisted Treeline cosmetic would exist.
What rewards can arrive after retirement?
Riot said it would grant a few small rewards to the most dedicated Twisted Treeline players once the mode was retired. Eligibility was based on games played before the announcement, and the announcement said the details would be provided later.
This establishes two principles:
- A retirement can include a separate recognition program after the final match, rather than ending every reward at the queue’s closing time.
- Post-retirement eligibility can be measured from an earlier participation cutoff, not from games played up to the final day.
The announcement did not name the exact items, quantity, or delivery date for those rewards in the documented statement. Do not turn “a few small rewards” into a specific skin, icon, border, currency amount, or guaranteed grant unless a later official notice supplies that detail.
Could a retired mode return?
“Retired” does not prove that a mode can never return. Riot said it would look for opportunities to bring back older modes with long-term potential and named One-for-All as an example of a mode that could return. That language describes a possibility, not a schedule or a guarantee for Twisted Treeline or any other particular mode.
A return could also be different from the original version: a mode might appear in a limited rotation, use revised rules, or be evaluated separately from its old queue. Until Riot announces a comeback, treat the retired queue as unavailable and its prior rank and reward rules as historical.

How to read any future retirement announcement
When Riot announces that another mode is leaving, compare the notice on these four axes instead of searching for a single blanket policy:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →1. Final date and queue availability
Find the exact season, patch, date, and time. Confirm whether the mode disappears permanently from the client at that point or simply leaves the current rotation. A rotation change and a full retirement have different implications for future access.
2. Rank status
Look for explicit wording about ongoing ranked games, final placements, displayed history, archived results, or conversion. If the notice says nothing about post-retirement display, it has not established a universal answer for that rank.
3. Rewards before closure
Check whether games in the mode still count toward the season’s end-of-season rewards and whether any mode-specific cosmetic is included. Twisted Treeline shows why these can diverge: the Victorious skin remained available to qualifying players, while the special chroma did not.
4. Rewards after closure
Look for a participation threshold, an eligibility cutoff, and a delivery explanation. If Riot measures games played before the announcement, games after that announcement may not increase eligibility even if the queue remains open for a while.
A practical player checklist
Use this checklist without assuming that one mode’s treatment will be repeated:
Best Value
- UNLOCK A UNIVERSE OF EXPERIENCES and compete with a global community of millions across multiple battlefields with Riot Games
- Unlocks in-game currency that can be used to purchase in-game items
- Redeemable in VALORANT, League of Legends, Wild Rift, Teamfight Tactics, Legends of Runeterra, and 2XKO
- PC, mobile, console… it all works. Just enter your code at shop.riotgames.com/redeem and choose the game you want to use this virtual currency for
- This code is only redeemable on Riot Accounts in North America and Canada
- Save the official retirement notice and note the stated season and final queue date.
- Separate ordinary end-of-season rewards from mode-specific cosmetics in your goals.
- Verify the current ranked-reward qualification rules before investing more games.
- Record your participation before any eligibility cutoff mentioned for post-retirement rewards.
- Do not expect a retired mode’s rank to transfer to another queue unless Riot says so.
- Keep account-inventory questions separate from queue-access questions; the Twisted Treeline notice did not announce deletion of owned skins or champions.
- Check later official updates for the names and delivery timing of any promised post-retirement rewards.
Common misconceptions
“Retired” means every related cosmetic is removed
No such deletion was stated in Riot’s Twisted Treeline announcement. The documented changes were the queue’s retirement and the reward plan. That is evidence against treating retirement as an automatic account wipe, but it is not a promise about every future mode.
If the mode’s rank is not visible, it must have been deleted
The announcement does not establish how rank history is displayed after closure. A display change, an archive, and deletion are different outcomes; only an explicit Riot explanation can distinguish them.
If one end-of-season reward remains, every mode reward remains
Twisted Treeline disproves that assumption. Qualifying players could still earn the season’s Victorious skin, while Riot said there would be no Twisted Treeline-specific chroma that year.

Riot has said it looks for opportunities to bring back older modes with long-term potential. That leaves the door open, but it does not create a timetable or guarantee.
Bottom line for Twisted Treeline and future modes
For Twisted Treeline, retirement removed the queue at the end of the season, preserved a final path to that season’s end-of-season rewards for qualifying players, withheld the mode-specific chroma, and included planned participation-based rewards for dedicated players after shutdown. Riot did not state that owned skins or champions would be deleted, and it did not define a universal post-retirement display rule for rank.
Apply the same discipline to any future announcement: treat queue access, account ownership, rank history, pre-closure rewards, and post-closure recognition as separate decisions. The mode’s own notice—not assumptions from another retirement—determines the answer.
