What Happens to Your Security Camera Footage if the Company Shuts Down?

If a security-camera maker or its cloud provider shuts down, there is no universal outcome. Cloud playback, event uploads, alerts, account logins and other online features may stop, and recordings already stored online may become inaccessible. Whether you can recover them depends on the provider’s retention rules, your account status and any shutdown arrangements.

The safest response is to export important clips while your account still works and keep a separate copy. A microSD card or other local recorder can reduce your dependence on a vendor, but only if your exact camera supports it, recording was configured in advance and you can still view or export the files without the company’s app or servers.

What can stop when a camera company closes?

Most consumer cameras combine a physical device with online services. The camera may continue receiving power and connecting to your home network, yet functions that depend on the company’s servers can fail when those servers are retired.

  • Cloud-stored video may no longer be playable or downloadable.
  • Motion events may stop uploading, so new incidents are not saved online.
  • Push notifications, email alerts and remote live view may disappear.
  • Account sign-in, password resets, device activation and camera setup may fail.
  • The mobile app may remain installed but show errors because its back-end service is gone.
  • Firmware, support pages and configuration tools may no longer be available.

A shutdown notice may specify a download period, transfer process or final service date. It may also provide little detail. The official documents reviewed for this topic do not establish what a future bankruptcy, acquisition or permanent closure would do for every camera brand, so treat any promised transition as vendor-specific rather than an industry standard.

Different events have different consequences

Event Likely effect What determines the result
Temporary cloud outage Remote viewing, alerts and cloud playback may be unavailable temporarily. Whether the provider restores its servers and how long local recording continues.
Your account is closed Cloud recordings can be deleted permanently. The provider’s account-deletion policy and whether you exported clips first.
A paid plan expires Retention or features may change without the company closing. The specific plan, camera and retention terms.
Your internet or Wi-Fi fails Cloud uploads and remote access stop, but some cameras can record locally. Model support, advance scheduling, local media and continuous power.
The company permanently shuts down Online services may stop and cloud access may be lost. Shutdown arrangements, account status, retention policy and any local copy.

Do not treat these situations as interchangeable. Losing Wi-Fi is a network problem; ending a subscription is a contract change; deleting an account is an administrative action; and a company shutdown is a service-continuity event.

Why cloud recordings are not a permanent archive

Cloud storage is controlled by the service operator. Its terms can reserve the right to delete recordings, limit retention and disclaim guaranteed availability. In its Supplemental Terms for the Wyze Cam, Wyze says it may delete User Recordings at any time and does not generally guarantee that they will remain accessible for a particular period unless it has made a written commitment. The same terms tell customers not to rely on the service as storage and to arrange separate saving, backup or storage for videos they want to retain.

That language matters even while a service is operating: a cloud account is not the same as an archive you control. A provider can also change how long clips remain available when a plan changes. For example, Wyze’s support guidance for one Cloud 60 arrangement says that when the subscription expires, the account reverts to 14-day cloud storage and older cloud recordings are no longer available. The 14-day rule applies to that plan example; it is not a general shutdown policy or an industry statistic.

Account closure is a separate risk from a plan ending. Arlo’s support page, updated October 10, 2024, says closing an account permanently deletes account data, including recordings and cloud content, and that the deleted information cannot be retrieved. Do not delete an account merely because you have stopped paying for a plan until every clip you need has been exported and checked.

Cloud storage versus local recording

Local recording can preserve footage when an online service is unavailable, but it is not automatically independent of the manufacturer. The camera must support local media, the feature must be enabled and the files may still require the vendor’s app or a working account for playback or export.

Storage method Where footage resides What may continue during an internet outage Main shutdown risk
Cloud recording Provider’s servers Usually no uploads or remote playback while disconnected. Servers, accounts or retention systems may be retired.
microSD or built-in local storage Media inside the camera or recorder Some models can record scheduled video without Wi-Fi when powered. Playback, export or configuration may still depend on the vendor app or service.
Separate recorder or storage system A device you control on your network or premises Recording can continue if the camera and recorder remain powered and compatible. Compatibility, storage failure and setup requirements remain your responsibility.

The sources available here establish that local recording exists on some models; they do not establish that every card can be read in a generic video player or that every camera can be configured after its company’s servers disappear. Verify those points for the exact model before treating local storage as a shutdown plan.

What to do before access is threatened

  1. Export the clips that matter. Download incident videos, not just screenshots. Open several downloaded files to confirm that the transfer completed and that audio, timestamps and the full duration are present.
  2. Keep two independent copies. Store one copy away from the camera account, such as on a computer or removable drive, and another in a separate location. A second copy protects against account loss, device failure and accidental deletion.
  3. Check your exact camera model. Look up whether it has a microSD slot or another local-recording option. Do not infer support from a similar model in the same product family.
  4. Confirm the recording mode. Determine whether the camera supports continuous recording, event-only clips or scheduled recording, and learn how much capacity each mode consumes.
  5. Install and test compatible media. Use the manufacturer’s stated card type and capacity limits. Enable recording, create a test event, remove or disconnect Wi-Fi as appropriate, then verify that the file can be found and exported.
  6. Test the viewing path. Find out whether local footage can be viewed or copied without signing in to the cloud or using the company’s servers. Documentation does not answer this universally, so a real test on your model is more reliable than an assumption.
  7. Preserve account access. Keep the email address, password and two-factor recovery method current while you are exporting footage. Avoid closing the account until the backup has been checked.
  8. Read shutdown or plan notices carefully. Note the final download date, any retention change and whether the notice covers your camera, region and subscription tier.

What Wyze’s local-recording guidance shows

Wyze’s support page updated March 4, 2026 lists microSD support for nearly all of its camera line while naming exceptions. The model list can change as products are introduced or retired, so the live support page for your precise model is the controlling reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wyze’s guidance updated August 12, 2026 says certain cameras can record to microSD while Wi-Fi is down if recording was scheduled beforehand and the camera still has power. Scheduling must be completed while the camera is online. This is a fallback for a network interruption, not proof that the same camera will remain manageable after Wyze’s servers are permanently shut down.

Another Wyze support article, updated May 14, 2026, describes local modes such as continuous or event recording and notes that users may need to review events manually. A card therefore changes how footage is stored; it does not guarantee cloud-like notifications, searchable history or automatic off-site backup.

What Arlo’s account and trial policies illustrate

Arlo’s account-closure guidance is an example of why exporting must happen before administrative changes: it states that closing an account permanently deletes recordings and cloud content and that the data cannot be retrieved.

Arlo’s support page updated September 15, 2026 describes features that may remain after a trial ends without a service plan. It says some functions, including local-storage recording, may continue, while Video History is unavailable; local storage is not offered on every device. This is a subscription-end example, not evidence of what Arlo or any other company would do in a shutdown.

If a shutdown is announced

  1. Identify the deadline. Save the notice and write down the last date for downloads, account access or refunds.
  2. Export in priority order. Start with evidence, safety incidents, insurance material and irreplaceable family footage. Then export less important clips if time remains.
  3. Do not delete the account or reset cameras. Account deletion can be irreversible, and a reset may remove credentials or settings needed to retrieve local files.
  4. Configure local recording while the service still works. Set schedules, format the card and test playback before the announced cutoff.
  5. Keep power available. A local card cannot record when the camera is turned off, and some models require an online setup step before offline recording works.
  6. Record what the notice does not promise. If it says cloud playback will end but says nothing about local files, do not assume the app will remain capable of reading them.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Possible cause Practical response
Downloaded clip will not play Incomplete export or a proprietary file format. Download again while access works, retain the original file and test it on another device.
Camera records nothing to the card Unsupported card, disabled recording, no schedule or insufficient power. Check the model’s card requirements, enable the intended mode and run a supervised test.
Local files exist but the app cannot open them Playback may depend on vendor software or account services. Export footage before shutdown and verify whether the manufacturer documents another viewing method.
Older cloud clips vanished after a plan change Retention reverted to a shorter period. Download needed clips before changing or allowing the plan to expire.
Account deletion removed everything Deletion was permanent under the provider’s policy. Use independent backups; support may not be able to restore cloud content.

How to judge a future camera’s continuity

When replacing a camera, ask specific questions rather than accepting “local storage” as a guarantee:

  • What card types and capacities are supported, and how is the card formatted?
  • Can you copy files directly without a cloud account or internet connection?
  • Will recording continue after Wi-Fi is disconnected, and what setup must be completed first?
  • Can the camera be configured and updated if the vendor’s servers are unavailable?
  • What happens to stored cloud clips when a plan expires or an account is closed?
  • Is there a documented export process and a stated retention period?

A camera with local storage is a stronger continuity choice than cloud-only recording, but no device should be called shutdown-proof without confirming these dependencies for its model, firmware and software. Keep independent copies of important footage regardless of the brand or storage method.

The practical answer

If the company shuts down, assume cloud footage and online features are at risk until the provider proves otherwise. Download important clips now, maintain separate backups, configure compatible local recording and test whether you can retrieve those files without the cloud. The exact outcome remains vendor-, plan- and model-specific, and official policies can change.
