Your save and your access to the game are separate. When a PlayStation Plus Extra title leaves the Game Catalog, you lose the ability to play it through the catalog, but a downloaded game’s save is stored on your PS4 or PS5 console. PlayStation says you can access that save again if you later buy the game, provided you have not deleted the saved data.
What changes when a game leaves the catalog?
The catalog entitlement ends: the game is no longer playable through your Extra membership once it leaves. That does not mean the game save is automatically deleted. PlayStation’s support guidance says saved data for downloaded PlayStation Plus games is stored on the console. Its May 2022 FAQ says that if you later purchase the title on PlayStation Store, you can access the save again as long as you have not deleted it. See PlayStation’s May 23, 2022 FAQ for that published guidance; availability and catalog end dates can change, so check the title’s current listing.

DLC and add-ons associated with the title can also become inaccessible when the game leaves the service. PlayStation says access can return if you resubscribe or buy the game.
Where is the save stored?

Streaming is a Premium feature, but the distinction matters if you have played the same title in both modes. PlayStation’s save and transfer instructions explain that downloaded and streamed saves are not automatically transferred between one another.

How to protect or move a save
Back up the save before changing consoles or switching between streamed and downloaded play. Cloud storage is a PlayStation Plus benefit. PlayStation’s US support page lists 100 GB for PS5 and PS4 saves and a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files; details may differ by region. Follow the interface steps for your console:
On PS5
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose the saved-data category for the console and game involved, then use the cloud-storage controls to upload the save.
- On the destination PS5, open the same settings area and download the save from cloud storage.
For PS4 saves managed on a PS5, PlayStation’s instructions specify Saved Data (PS4) and the Upload to Cloud Storage tab.

On PS4
- Highlight the game in Library.
- Press OPTIONS and select Upload/Download Saved Data.
- Select the save and upload it. On the destination console, download it from cloud storage.
Use the official PlayStation save-transfer guide if the menus or categories differ for your console or save type.
PS4 USB backup is limited
A compatible USB drive can be used for PS4 saved data. PlayStation’s PS5 storage guide says the drive must be formatted as FAT or exFAT and warns that not all devices work. This is not a way to back up PS5 saves or keep playing a game that has left the catalog.

What to do if you plan to buy the game later
- Do not delete the console save if you want to use it with a later purchase.
- Before replacing or resetting a console, upload the save to cloud storage and download it to the new console.
- If you switch between streamed and downloaded play, manually transfer through cloud storage rather than expecting automatic synchronization.
PlayStation’s 2022 FAQ also says downloaded Extra and Premium/Deluxe catalog games require a PSN connection at least every seven days to validate membership and maintain access. That is a membership-validation requirement, not a save-deletion schedule.
