Delisting removes or limits new sales; it does not, by itself, delete a save stored on your PS4 or PS5 or wipe trophies already synchronized to your account. The practical outcome depends on four separate questions: whether you already own the game, whether you can download it again, whether it still works offline, and whether its online services remain available.
Back up saves, synchronize trophies, and check the game’s own service notice before a shutdown. A server closure can remove multiplayer, shared creations, or online trophy requirements while leaving a single-player campaign usable. Closing or losing a PlayStation account is a different and more serious event than a delisting.

Delisting, server shutdown and account termination are different events
“Delisted” means a game has been removed from sale or is no longer offered to new buyers through a particular PlayStation Store. It does not describe what happens to every copy already purchased. Sony’s service notices often list a separate date for taking a title off sale and a later date for shutting down its servers. Destruction AllStars is an example: its notice gives a May 2026 removal-from-sale date and a November 2026 service-shutdown date.

Always identify which event occurred, for which console generation, in which region and on what date. A notice for one title or platform cannot be treated as a universal PlayStation policy.

Will a delisted game delete your local save?
A save stored in console storage is not described by Sony as being erased merely because the associated game is removed from sale. The save remains useful only if the game can still be installed or launched on a compatible console and does not require an unavailable online service to read or validate it. Keeping the installed game in place avoids relying on a future download.
What can make a local save unusable
- The game was deleted and no longer can be downloaded to your account or console.
- The title depends on a server that has been closed for authentication, progression, matchmaking or other required functions.
- The save belongs to a different edition, region or platform than the copy you are trying to launch.
- A console failure, storage failure or account problem destroyed access independently of the delisting.
These are availability or compatibility problems, not evidence that delisting itself scrubbed the file. Treat a local save as valuable data and make a current backup before changing consoles or waiting for a scheduled service closure.
How to protect PS4 and PS5 saves
PlayStation Plus cloud storage
PlayStation Plus members can store up to 100 GB of PS4 saved data and up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data in online storage. Sony’s PS4 documentation also specifies a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. Cloud backup requires an active PlayStation Plus membership; it is not a free, universal archive for every account.

On PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), then manage the copy in console storage or cloud storage. The separate PS4 and PS5 categories matter: a PS4 save and a native PS5 save do not use the same transfer route.
USB copying and a PS4-to-PS5 move
Sony permits copying PS4 game saves to a USB drive. The practical sequence is:
- Format a compatible USB drive on a computer or console if necessary, and leave enough free space for the saves.
- On PS4, open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Copy to USB Storage Device.
- Select the game and save files, then copy them to the USB drive.
- Connect the drive to the destination PS5 and open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > USB Drive.
- Choose Copy to Console Storage and verify that the game sees the transferred progress.
Sony explicitly says that you cannot copy PS5 saved data from a PS5 console to a USB drive. Do not treat a USB export as a PS5-save backup method. For native PS5 saves, use PlayStation Plus cloud storage or the console’s supported data-transfer process instead.

- Launch the game and save normally, so the newest progress is present before backing up.
- Confirm the game is installed, or confirm that your account still lists the purchase in its library.
- Upload the relevant saves and check the cloud timestamp.
- For PS4 saves, keep a second copy on USB when moving to PS5 or protecting against storage failure.
- Keep the original console, drive and account details until the replacement copy has loaded successfully.
What happens to trophies?
Trophy records are associated with your PlayStation account and its services, while the conditions for earning a particular trophy belong to the game. A delisting does not, by itself, remove trophies that have already synchronized. Synchronize while signed in and online, before transferring consoles or before a known service shutdown.

Synchronize before you move data
Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 transfer checklist tells users to synchronize trophy information first. On either console, open the Trophies area while connected to PlayStation Network and use the available synchronize command. Wait for the operation to finish before starting a transfer or signing out of the old console.
This is a precaution, not a promise that every future trophy operation will work. A trophy earned locally but never synchronized is vulnerable to console loss, corruption or account-access problems. A trophy that requires an online event, leaderboard, user-created level or server-side validation may become impossible after that service closes.
Offline and online trophy requirements
- Offline trophy: It may remain earnable if the game launches and the objective can be completed without a server.
- Online-session trophy: It can fail once matchmaking or multiplayer servers are closed.
- Server-validation trophy: It may depend on an account check, leaderboard or cloud event that no longer exists.
- Previously earned trophy: It should remain part of the synchronized account record, subject to continued access to that account and PlayStation services.
There is no universal Sony guarantee that every trophy in every delisted game remains earnable. For a specific title, read its current service notice and inspect the trophy requirements for online dependencies.

Can you still play a game you bought?
Often, yes, provided the game is installed or remains available in your account library and the console can run it. Delisting mainly affects new purchases. Playability can still change if a license check, required server or platform compatibility requirement is removed.

Offline play can survive a server closure
Sony’s service notice for LittleBigPlanet 3 says its PS4 online servers are offline indefinitely. Access to other players’ creations is unavailable, but locally stored user-generated content remains available and the offline campaign remains playable. Sony gives similar guidance for inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS Festival of Blood: offline features, including the main campaign, remain playable after their user-generated-content servers close.
These examples show why “servers are shutting down” is not the same as “the game is deleted.” Read the notice for the exact title to see which features are listed as remaining and which are ending.
What to do if the game is already installed
- Do not delete the game simply to test whether a future download will work.
- Start it while your account is signed in and connected, then test the story or other offline mode.
- Open your saved game and create a new backup after confirming it loads.
- Record any online-only activities you still need to complete before the published shutdown date.
Can you redownload a delisted PS4 or PS5 game?
Redownload rights depend on the platform, region, account purchase record, licensing system and the publisher’s support for that title. A prior purchase is not a blanket guarantee that every delisted game will remain downloadable forever. Check your Game Library and the game’s current support notice while the title is still installed or listed.
A specific PS3 and PS Vita notice
Sony’s US notice says the PS3 and PS Vita stores will stop accepting new purchases beginning in July 2027, while previously purchased content will remain downloadable for the foreseeable future. The same notice qualifies continued play by the availability of each game’s online features and services. This statement is limited to those devices and the US region; it is not a promise covering PS4, PS5, every country or every title.

When a redownload is not enough
A successful download does not restore a closed service. You may be able to install and launch the game but lose multiplayer, shared creations, competitive rankings or online trophy conditions. Conversely, a game may still have functioning servers while no longer being purchasable. Treat download availability and feature availability as separate checks.
What account termination changes
Do not apply Sony’s account-termination rules to an ordinary delisting. The March 2026 US English Terms of Service state that account termination is irreversible and that, after termination, information saved on or requiring a connection to PlayStation services will not be retained or accessible. The terms specifically include game rankings, scores, trophies, virtual items, subscriptions and other service-dependent information.
If you are considering closing an account, first synchronize trophies, upload saves, verify access to the account you intend to keep and understand that an account closure can remove service access even when the game itself remains installed. Delisting alone does not trigger that account-termination clause.

Practical preservation checklist
- Identify whether the announcement is a delisting, a server shutdown, an account action or several events with different dates.
- Check the console generation and region named in the notice.
- Leave the game installed when storage allows.
- Launch the game and confirm the latest save opens.
- Upload PS4 and PS5 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage if you have membership.
- Copy PS4 saves to USB when appropriate; never assume that route works for native PS5 saves.
- Synchronize trophies while signed in and connected to PlayStation Network.
- List online-only modes and trophies, then complete them before the service deadline if possible.
- Keep the old console, backup drive and account credentials until the replacement copy has been tested.
- Recheck the title’s current service notice because dates and supported features can change.
