When a game leaves Xbox Game Pass, your subscription access to launch it ends, but that is separate from your save data and achievements. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit policy says game progress, saved state, preferences and achievements are associated with the user who recorded or earned them. It does not specify that those records are deleted when a title leaves the catalog.
Do you lose your save when a game leaves Game Pass?
Leaving the catalog changes whether Game Pass lets you play the game; it does not, under Microsoft’s published policy, automatically erase your account-associated progress. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit policy XR-052, version 2.0 dated 2025-11-01, says: “Titles must associate progress, saved state, preferences, achievements, and other rewards with the user(s) who have recorded that progress, chosen the preferences, or earned the rewards.” Read Microsoft’s XR-052 policy.

If you regain access by purchasing the game or through another entitlement, you may be able to resume with the same account-associated save. Use the Xbox account that played the game, and make sure you have access to the same title or a version that supports the relevant save path. A different edition or storefront is not automatically guaranteed to share progress.

Cloud saves also depend on the game’s implementation. Microsoft’s GDK documentation explains that title storage holds game-save data in the cloud and is automatically synced when a user initiates Game Saves; it does not establish how long a save is retained after a game leaves Game Pass. Will your achievements disappear?
Microsoft’s XR-052 policy associates achievements with the user who earned them, and does not say they are removed when a game leaves the subscription catalog. Losing Game Pass access can prevent you from launching the title through the subscription, but that is different from deleting achievements already recorded on your account.

Can a save move between Xbox and PC?
It depends on the game and the platforms involved. Xbox console save roaming is specified for titles using the same TitleID, and Microsoft’s requirements also cover roaming across Xbox console generations. That does not mean every edition sold through every store shares a save.

For supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles, Microsoft says players can continue on another Xbox or a Windows 10/11 PC, bringing saves, add-ons and achievements with them. What to check before you return to a game
- Sign in with the Xbox account you used when playing and earning achievements.
- Confirm that the version you can launch is the same title or explicitly supports the save transfer you need.
- For Xbox-to-PC continuation, check whether the game is an Xbox Play Anywhere title rather than assuming all PC versions sync with Xbox.
- If the save is missing, check the game’s title-specific support information; the general policy does not establish how every game handles local saves, cloud syncing or cross-store transfers.
