When a game leaves Xbox Game Pass, your subscription stops providing access to it. Your progress is expected to remain in cloud saves, but that guidance is not a guarantee for every game. To keep playing, you’ll need another way to access the title, such as buying it.
What changes when a game leaves Game Pass?
Game Pass access and save data are separate. Once a title leaves the catalog, Game Pass no longer supplies the entitlement to play it. Xbox’s Game Pass catalog includes a “Leaving soon” category and points members to buying a game to keep playing. The catalog does not establish a universal notice period.

A game might still appear installed on your console or PC, but having its files is not the same as having a license to launch and play it. Check the title’s current availability and your account’s entitlement if access changes.
Will your save still be there?
Microsoft Community answers say cloud progress remains available after Game Pass access ends and can be resumed when you regain access by renewing or purchasing the game. Treat this as expected guidance rather than a formal promise that every title’s saves will be retained indefinitely. The official Xbox Game Pass FAQ did not provide readable save-specific text in the available source material.

Save behavior can depend on the game and the version you return to. If you plan to switch between Xbox and PC, or between editions, check whether those versions share saves and whether any publisher account or separate save system is involved; a universal transfer rule is not established.
How can you keep playing?
Buy the game
Buying the matching game edition is the direct way to restore access without waiting for it to return to Game Pass. Confirm the platform version and current listing before purchasing so the entitlement matches the version you play.

Check the member offer
Xbox advertises a Game Pass member discount of up to 20% on its catalog, and its 2020 Xbox Wire article recommended using the discount for games due to leave. “Up to” is a maximum, not a guaranteed discount on a particular title: check the game’s live price, offer, and eligibility before buying.
Wait for access to return
If you do not buy the game, you can wait until it becomes available to you again through Game Pass or another entitlement. Until then, the subscription does not provide access to that departed title.

What to check before you stop playing
- Look for the title in Game Pass’s “Leaving soon” category; it does not imply a fixed number of days’ notice.
- Check the game’s save system and platform or edition compatibility if you may resume on a different device or version.
- If buying, verify the specific listing, platform, current price, and any displayed member discount.
