Your temporary right to play ends when the Free Weekend ends, but Steam does not document a universal rule that deletes your save. The game normally stays in your Steam library, where you can uninstall it, while continued play requires buying the full version. Whether your progress is still available after purchase depends on that game’s save design: it may be synchronized through Steam Cloud, stored only on the computer where you played, or affected by an unresolved Cloud conflict.
Valve’s Free Weekends documentation describes the promotion as time-limited access. Steam Support’s Steam Cloud guidance makes clear that developers decide which files are uploaded. Those are separate systems, so the end of the license does not by itself answer what happened to your save.

What changes when the Free Weekend ends?
The Steamworks Free Weekend package is automatically deactivated and removed after the promotion. Players who participated can still see the game in their Steam libraries, but the temporary play license no longer launches the game for continued use. Steam’s documented post-event behavior is that you can uninstall the title; to keep playing, you must purchase the full version.

Valve says Free Weekends typically run from Thursday at 10 a.m. Pacific to Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific and recommends running one for at least four days. That is operational guidance, not a guarantee that every promotion uses exactly those times. The end time shown on the store page or in the client controls your access for that particular event.

The license change does not state that save files are erased. A save is data created by the game, while the Free Weekend package controls whether you are licensed to launch it. Steam’s public documentation explains the access expiration but does not promise that every game’s save will persist, transfer to another computer, or remain compatible with a later purchase.
Does Steam delete your Free Weekend save?
There is no universal “yes” or “no.” Valve does not say that Steam routinely deletes Free Weekend saves, and it does not guarantee that every save remains usable. The result depends on the game’s implementation and where it wrote your progress.
- Cloud-enabled game: The developer may configure Steam Cloud to upload some or all user files. If the save was among those files and synchronization completed, it may download when you install or start the purchased copy.
- Local-only game: The save can remain on the original computer even though the temporary license has ended. It will not automatically appear on another computer.
- Partial or custom Cloud support: A game can synchronize selected files while leaving other progress, settings, profiles, or screenshots local.
- Unresolved sync conflict: Steam may have both a local and a cloud version with different timestamps. Choosing the wrong version can replace newer progress.
Steam Support explicitly says that “Developers are able to completely customize how The Steam Cloud is used for their games, including which user files are uploaded.” It also notes that many games do not use Steam Cloud for save games. Therefore, the store page’s Cloud indicator is a useful starting point, not proof that your particular save is covered.
How to check whether your game uses Steam Cloud
- Open the game’s Steam store page and look for the Steam Cloud indicator in the feature list.
- Read the game’s support page, manual, or community guidance to identify the save files and folders it synchronizes. The developer, not Steam, decides the file scope.
- After playing, allow Steam to finish syncing before closing the client or shutting down the computer. A Cloud icon or status message that reports an error means the copy may not be current.
- If the store page does not show Cloud support, assume that progress may be local until the developer confirms otherwise.
The indicator cannot tell you whether every mode, profile, character, or configuration file is included. A developer may synchronize one save directory but exclude another, or use a separate account service for online progress. For a definitive answer, use that game’s support information or ask its developer or established community.

Where local Steam saves are stored
When Steam Cloud is disabled, or when the game keeps files outside its Cloud configuration, progress normally remains on the computer where you played. Steam’s default userdata locations are:

These folders contain Steam account and application data, but a game’s actual saves can be elsewhere. Third-party developers choose their own locations; common examples include a Documents folder, a user profile’s application-data directory, a home-directory configuration folder, or a folder inside the game’s installation directory. Search the game’s support documentation for its exact path rather than assuming every title uses Steam’s userdata tree.
If you still have the original computer, make a copy of the relevant save folder before reinstalling, changing Cloud settings, or resolving a conflict. Keep the untouched copy separate from the Steam folder so an automated sync or overwrite cannot destroy your only known-good version.

Buying the game restores the right to launch the full version; it is not a save-recovery service. Your progress can continue when the purchased edition reads the same save format and the file is available to it, but several different situations are possible.

Do not assume that a Free Weekend build and the retail build always use identical save formats. Most games are designed to let a trial or event build hand off to the purchased version, but compatibility is a game-specific implementation detail. Check the developer’s instructions if the new copy does not recognize the save.
How to handle a Steam Cloud conflict safely
Steam can report a synchronization problem when the local and cloud copies differ. This often happens after playing offline, using another computer, interrupting a sync, or changing files manually. Steam warns that ignoring a sync problem risks conflicts or lost progress and says lost saves are unlikely to be recoverable.
- Stop launching the game repeatedly. Repeated starts can create newer files and make it harder to identify the version you want.
- Record your play history. Note when you last played and which computer contains the newest progress.
- Compare the conflict details. Use the timestamps and file-size information Steam presents to distinguish the local copy from the cloud copy. A later timestamp is not automatically better if the later file was created by a reset or empty profile, so relate it to what you actually played.
- Preserve the local files first. Copy the game’s save folder to a separate location before choosing an option in the conflict dialog.
- Select the version that matches your verified progress. Let Steam complete synchronization, then launch the game and inspect the in-game load menu.
- If the result is wrong, stop syncing changes. Restore the preserved copy only according to the game’s support instructions; blindly replacing files can trigger another overwrite.
Cloud synchronization is not a version-control system with an unlimited history. Once a newer or incorrect file has propagated, Steam may not provide a restore point. A manual copy made before troubleshooting is therefore the safest protection for a local save.

Steam Support’s Using the Steam Backup Feature article warns that Valve-created game backups omit saved games. The backup can help reinstall the game files, but it should not be treated as a backup of your personal progress. Because third-party save locations vary, use the game’s own instructions to copy the save folder separately.

A reliable personal backup should include the complete save directory, preserve the original files unchanged, and be stored outside the Steam installation. If the game supports multiple profiles or characters, copy the whole documented folder rather than a single file whose purpose is unclear.

If your progress matters, perform these checks while the event is still active or immediately afterward:
- Confirm the promotion’s end time on the game’s Steam page.
- Finish your session online and wait for Steam to report that Cloud synchronization completed.
- Check the game’s support documentation for the save path and Cloud coverage.
- Copy local saves from the original computer before uninstalling, reinstalling, or changing account or Cloud settings.
- Record the last quest, level, character, or checkpoint you reached so you can identify the correct file if Steam presents a conflict.
Uninstalling the game removes installed program files, but the fate of saves depends on the game’s storage behavior and any uninstall prompt it provides. Do not delete the save folder manually until you have confirmed that a Cloud copy exists or that your personal backup is complete.

Playing offline
Offline play can leave the newest progress only on the local machine. When you reconnect, Steam may need to reconcile that file with an older cloud copy. Resolve the warning rather than automatically accepting the first option.
Using more than one computer
Different computers can each contain a valid but different local save. Cloud synchronization helps only for files the developer integrated. If the game is local-only, transfer the save using its documented procedure and keep both originals until the imported file is confirmed.
Limited Steam accounts
Steam’s Limited User Accounts guidance says Free Weekends do not remove limited-account restrictions. The promotion ending does not unlock account features, and account limitations are separate from whether a save exists.
Different editions or platforms
A save may not transfer between separate editions, operating systems, or non-Steam releases even when the game title is identical. Verify compatibility with the developer before moving files or assuming a cross-platform Cloud copy will load.
The practical answer
Steam ends the temporary play license and leaves the game listed in your library, but its official Free Weekend information does not say that saves are deleted. To continue where you stopped, buy the game and then verify the save path and Cloud behavior for that title. A synchronized, compatible save may return automatically; a local save requires the original computer or a manual transfer; and a Cloud conflict must be resolved by comparing versions and preserving originals first.
