Turning off Reminders in iCloud disconnects only the device where you switch it off. The iCloud lists stop appearing in that device’s Reminders app, but Apple’s documentation says the reminders remain in your online account and on other devices already connected to the same Apple Account. Turn Reminders on again and the iCloud lists become available there again.
The important distinction is between disabling one service on one device and deleting an iCloud account. The first removes that device’s connection; it is not, by itself, a command to erase the cloud copy.

What the Reminders switch actually changes
On an iPhone or iPad, the Reminders switch in iCloud controls whether that device connects its Reminders app to the iCloud account. It is a per-device connection setting, not a global delete button.
- On the device you changed: iCloud lists no longer appear in Reminders while the switch is off.
- In iCloud: Apple says reminders remain in the internet account, such as iCloud.com/reminders.
- On other enabled devices: iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac devices signed in to the same Apple Account continue to show and update the iCloud reminders.
- Other accounts and local lists: Lists belonging to a different account or an “On My iPhone” style local location are separate from the iCloud switch and are not removed by disabling iCloud Reminders.
Apple’s general iCloud wording says that when an app is turned off, it no longer connects with iCloud and its data exists only on the device. For Reminders, Apple’s account instructions specifically explain that removing the account from a device makes those reminders disappear from that device while they remain in the internet account and on devices already set up. Use the Reminders-specific behavior when deciding whether your cloud lists are safe.

Turn off iCloud Reminders safely
Check the cloud copy before disconnecting anything. This gives you a reference if a list is hidden afterward and confirms that you are using the expected Apple Account.
- Open iCloud.com/reminders in a browser, sign in with the same Apple Account, and confirm that the lists and recent changes are present. You can also check another Apple device that is still syncing.
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
- Tap [your name] at the top, then tap iCloud.
- Tap See All to display the apps using iCloud. Some software releases use Show All instead.
- Tap or switch off Reminders.
- Open Reminders and look under the account sections. The iCloud lists should no longer be shown on that device while the service is disabled.
Read any confirmation sheet carefully. Apple does not guarantee that every iOS or iPadOS release presents the same “keep a local copy” prompt when only the Reminders switch is disabled. Do not treat the presence or absence of such a prompt as proof that the cloud data was deleted. Verify the online copy first and use Apple’s current wording on your device as the authority for any choice it presents.
What you will see after switching it off
The iCloud lists disappear from that device
Reminders that belong to the iCloud account are removed from the device’s visible iCloud section. Apple describes the result for a removed account this way: reminders in that account no longer appear on the iPhone. The same practical effect applies when the Reminders service is disconnected: the app cannot display lists it is no longer connected to.

The switch does not itself erase the online account. Apple says the reminders remain in the internet account and on other devices that were already set up. You can confirm this by signing in at iCloud.com/reminders or checking a second device with Reminders still enabled.

Other devices continue syncing
A Mac, iPad, iPhone or Apple Watch that remains signed in to the same Apple Account and has Reminders enabled continues using iCloud. Changes made on those devices continue to reach the cloud and the other connected devices. Disconnecting one iPhone does not pause synchronization for everyone else.
Do new reminders still sync while the switch is off?
Not from that disconnected Reminders app. Once the app no longer connects with iCloud, additions, edits and completions made there do not travel through the iCloud synchronization path.
If you create a reminder in a list that is local to the device or belongs to another enabled account, it follows that list’s storage and synchronization rules. It is not an iCloud reminder merely because it appears in the Reminders app.

How to restore your iCloud lists
You can reconnect the device later without deleting the account.
- Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad.
- Tap [your name], then iCloud.
- Tap See All (or Show All on releases using that label).
- Turn on Reminders.
- Open the Reminders app and select the lists in its iCloud section.
Allow the device to connect to the internet and give the lists time to load. If they do not appear, confirm that the device is signed in to the same Apple Account you checked online; an account mismatch is a more likely explanation than cloud deletion.
What happens to shared reminder lists?
A shared list is stored in the owner’s iCloud account and made available to invited participants. Turning off Reminders on your device removes your local access to that shared list along with your other iCloud lists. It does not revoke the invitations or erase the owner’s copy for other participants.
Participants whose devices remain connected can continue viewing and editing the shared list. Your disconnected device cannot reliably send edits, assignments or completions to that list. Because Apple does not document a guaranteed merge procedure for changes made while disconnected, make consequential edits only after restoring the iCloud connection and confirming that the current shared version is visible.

Turning off Reminders versus removing an account
These actions have different scopes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Choice | Effect on the selected device | Effect on other devices and iCloud | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn off Reminders in iCloud | The device stops displaying and syncing iCloud Reminders. | Other devices with Reminders enabled continue using the account; the online copy remains. | Temporarily disconnecting one device or troubleshooting synchronization. |
| Keep Reminders enabled | iCloud lists and edits remain available in the app. | Connected Apple devices and iCloud.com continue exchanging changes. | Normal cross-device use. |
| Remove an account or sign out | Services associated with that account are removed from the device, with separate prompts and consequences. | Apple says reminders remain in the internet account and on devices already configured, but other account services are affected by the broader action. | Changing accounts or preparing a device for another user. |
If your goal is only to stop Reminders from syncing, use the Reminders switch rather than signing out of the entire Apple Account.

Access on another Apple device requires the same Apple Account, an internet connection and Reminders enabled in iCloud. Apple also documents version limitations for upgraded Reminders. A device running older software may not show or fully support lists that use newer Reminders features.
When one device cannot see a list after reconnection, check whether its operating system is compatible with the current Reminders format before assuming data loss. Updating the device, where supported, can restore access; if it cannot be updated, use a compatible device or iCloud.com to view the account.

Common questions and failure cases
“Will my reminders be deleted if I turn off iCloud?”
Not by the single-device Reminders switch. The lists disappear locally, while Apple says the cloud account and already configured devices retain them. Confirm the online copy before changing the setting, especially if a confirmation dialog appears.
“Do my reminders stay on my iPhone?”
iCloud lists stop appearing on that iPhone while the connection is off. Lists stored locally or under another account are separate and can remain visible. The iCloud copy is still available online and on other connected devices.
“Will my other devices lose the reminders?”
No, provided those devices remain signed in to the same Apple Account with Reminders enabled and use compatible software. They continue to sync independently of the device you disconnected.

“Can I turn iCloud Reminders back on later?”
Yes. Re-enable Reminders under Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All, then open the iCloud section in Reminders. The lists should return after the device reconnects.
“Why is a list missing after I turned Reminders back on?”
- Check that the Apple Account shown in Settings matches the account containing the list at iCloud.com.
- Confirm that Reminders is enabled under iCloud and that the device has internet access.
- Open the Reminders app’s iCloud section rather than a local or third-party account section.
- Check software compatibility if the list uses upgraded Reminders features.
- Verify the list at iCloud.com/reminders or on another connected Apple device before making further account changes.
“What if I changed reminders while the service was off?”
Those changes were not sent through iCloud while the device was disconnected. Apple does not guarantee how such offline edits will be reconciled later. Reconnect, inspect the current cloud version, and recreate any missing important changes deliberately instead of assuming an automatic merge.
A low-risk way to manage the switch
- Check the target lists at iCloud.com/reminders first.
- Leave at least one trusted Apple device connected if you need uninterrupted access.
- Turn off only Reminders if that is the service you intend to disconnect.
- Avoid editing iCloud lists on the disconnected device.
- When reconnecting, verify the Apple Account, enable Reminders, and inspect the iCloud section before resuming edits.
- Keep software reasonably current when using upgraded Reminders features across devices.
The practical outcome is simple: disabling iCloud Reminders hides the cloud lists from one device and stops that device’s sync connection; it does not, by itself, delete the reminders from iCloud or from other configured devices.
