What gets stored, used for training, or deleted depends on the specific service, provider, and feature—not simply on the fact that you used an aggregator.
How prompts and files travel through an AI aggregator
A useful way to understand services such as OpenRouter and Poe is to follow the request: you → aggregator → selected or automatically routed model provider → aggregator → you. The aggregator receives your input, routes it to a model, and returns the result. The provider processes the request under its own terms.

This is a model of those services, not a guarantee about every product described as an AI aggregator. A request can also involve account and device information, usage or request metadata, operational screening, and optional features such as logging, persistent storage, memory, or shared chats. Those create separate handling paths and potential copies of data.

For example, OpenRouter says it retains request metadata such as token counts and latency even when prompt and response content is not being logged under its documented default settings. Its terms and privacy policy also distinguish its own handling from the selected provider’s retention and training practices. Do AI aggregators store your prompts?
Some may, and the answer can differ between the aggregator and the model provider. OpenRouter’s documentation says it does not store prompts or responses unless users opt in to private input/output logging or to the use of that content for product improvement. That does not mean no request-related information is retained: OpenRouter says it collects metadata, and the provider receiving a request has its own data terms.
Check which layer a privacy setting covers. An aggregator’s setting may govern what the aggregator logs or uses; it does not automatically establish what a downstream provider retains. OpenRouter describes provider practices as varying, so review the terms for the provider and model receiving the request as well.

Can an AI aggregator use prompts to train models?
There is no single rule for aggregators. OpenRouter says some model providers may use inputs and outputs for training or improvement. Poe distinguishes official bots using listed model providers from third-party bots and apps: its Privacy Center says interactions with a bot or app may be used for training, and its privacy-shield indicator describes whether provider sharing or additional developer and external-resource access applies.

A half-shaded shield indicates data may also be shared with bot or app developers or external resources and may be used for training. The shield is a feature-specific disclosure, not a general promise about all aggregators. Review Poe’s Privacy Center and the selected bot or app details.

What happens to files you upload?
“Upload” can mean sending a file as part of a model request or saving it in persistent storage for later use. Those are different operations, and the selected model provider may receive files submitted with inference requests under its own data terms.
Files sent as inference inputs
OpenRouter says image, audio, and video inputs are transmitted to the provider and are not persisted by OpenRouter beyond routing, except where needed for operational, security, billing, or legal purposes. This is OpenRouter’s stated practice; it should not be assumed to describe other aggregators.

Files saved to persistent storage
OpenRouter’s separate Files API supports persistent uploads. Its privacy policy says those files remain until you delete them or close your account, subject to policy exceptions and applicable deletion timeframes. Stored files may be screened and transmitted as needed to fulfill requests. OpenRouter also says each provider processes uploaded files under its own data-handling, retention, and use terms.
Before uploading, establish whether the feature sends a file only with a request or retains it for later use. Do not infer that a file is transient merely because you attached it to a chat.

How memory, bots, and shared chats can widen access
Optional features can change who receives or can see information beyond the basic request route.
- Poe bots and apps: Poe says interactions are shared with the providers powering the bot or app. A half-shaded shield indicates possible additional sharing with developers or external resources.
- Memory: Poe says memory can preserve helpful context and share that memory with other model providers. Deleting a chat does not necessarily remove memory summaries; those must be deleted separately.
- Group chats: Other participants can see interactions shared in the group, so avoid treating a group conversation as private from its members.
Check the feature’s disclosure and access controls before adding confidential details, rather than assuming that the privacy terms for a basic one-to-one chat cover it.
How to check a service before sharing sensitive data
- Identify the route. Check the selected model and provider, and whether automatic routing can choose a provider for you.
- Review logging and training controls. Determine whether prompt and response logging or content use for improvement is on, optional, or unavailable, and what each control actually covers.
- Check file handling. Find out whether an attachment is a transient inference input or a persistent upload, how deletion works, and what exceptions apply.
- Inspect feature access. Review bot or app permissions, memory, external resources, and whether chats are shared with other users.
- Read provider terms. Confirm the downstream provider’s retention and training terms; an aggregator’s setting may not control them.
- Plan for deletion. Use the service’s deletion controls and check for separate memory, provider, backup, or legal retention terms.
For confidential, personal, client, or regulated information, the safest choice is not to submit it unless you have verified the commitments that apply to both the aggregator and the provider for your use case.
What deletion does—and does not—promise
Deletion controls are service-specific and may not erase data from every system at once. OpenRouter says persistent Files API uploads are retained until deletion or account closure, then removed subject to stated exceptions and applicable deletion timeframes. Poe says deleting chats removes them from Poe systems, but memory summaries may remain until memory is separately deleted. Neither disclosure establishes immediate removal from all downstream providers or backups.
These examples reflect official disclosures: OpenRouter’s Terms page reports “Last Updated: August 31, 2026,” and Poe’s Privacy Center reports “Last updated: Apr 30, 2026.” Policies can change, and those disclosures are not independent audits. There is no universal retention period or privacy guarantee for AI aggregators as a category.
