What Happens to Your iPhone Payments and Trade-In If You Leave Your Carrier?

Leaving your carrier does not erase what you owe on an iPhone. Depending on your installment agreement and promotion, cancelling service may make the remaining device balance due and stop future trade-in or promotional credits. Your phone’s unlock eligibility is a separate question, so confirm both the payoff and unlock status before switching.

What happens to your iPhone balance when you cancel?

Your wireless service and your phone financing are separate obligations. Cancelling a line ends service, but it does not automatically cancel an installment agreement. Some carrier terms require the unpaid device balance to be paid when service ends; some offers may allow payments to continue if you meet specific conditions. The result depends on your carrier, agreement, promotion, account status and, in some cases, state.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For example, Verizon says cancellation on a line receiving a device promotion ends the credits and normally makes the remaining device-payment-agreement balance due. Verizon says Missouri customers have the option to continue paying the remaining balance over time. T-Mobile says cancellation generally stops recurring device credits and may make the full device balance due; its offer-details page advises customers to contact the company before cancelling to ask whether payments can continue. Verizon’s device-deals FAQ and T-Mobile’s 2026 offer details set out those policies.

AT&T’s published terms for a particular trade-in offer state that cancelling wireless service ends credits and makes the remaining installment balance on the purchased device due. That is an example of a specific offer’s terms, not a universal rule for every AT&T agreement. Read the offer tied to your account rather than relying on a general description of the carrier’s policies.

These are different pieces of the switching cost: the amount still owed on the phone and the value of promotional credits you will no longer receive. Don’t assume the credits already applied erase the remaining device agreement, or that the carrier will keep applying future credits after the line closes. Check the agreement and promotion together to understand what you owe and what stops.

Will you lose the trade-in credits?

Often, future promotional credits depend on keeping a qualifying line and meeting the offer’s plan and account conditions. Cancelling service can stop the credits before they finish, so the switching cost may include both the unpaid phone balance and the credits you will no longer receive. Compare that total with the cost of staying until the promotion ends; looking only at the new carrier’s monthly price can understate the cost of leaving.

Credits may also stop for reasons other than cancellation. Verizon says they can end if you change to a non-qualifying plan, pay off the agreement early, make certain account transfers or use an early-upgrade option. The exact terms depend on the specific promotion. See Verizon’s device-deals FAQ.

A promotion is not necessarily a simple discount that follows the phone wherever you go. Check which line, plan and account conditions are attached to it, how many credits remain, and whether a change you are considering counts as a disqualifying event. The offer ID and the installment start date can matter, so use the terms for your own purchase rather than assuming another customer’s offer works the same way.

Timing matters when you are waiting for trade-in credits to appear. Verizon says some credits begin after it receives the trade-in and can take 1–2 billing periods to show up. Under the cited AT&T offer, credits begin within three bills after trade-in completion and are spread across the installment term. If the expected credit has not appeared, confirm receipt and processing status before assuming it was rejected or cancelling service.

What does “trade-in” mean in your deal?

A trade-in can refer to a phone you have already sent in, a device you promised to send but have not yet submitted, or a turn-in under an early-upgrade program. These situations can have different deadlines and financial consequences. Find the offer ID and determine which stage applies to you before you cancel.

A trade-in already sent to the carrier

Check whether the carrier has received and accepted the device, and whether credits have started. Verizon says eligibility can depend on the required plan and the trade-in phone’s working and cosmetic condition. Some promotions for existing customers also require 60 consecutive days of activity on a Verizon account. The terms of the particular offer govern; a submitted phone alone does not establish that every condition has been met.

If credits have not shown up yet, check the trade-in tracking or account record and ask whether the device was received and processed. The published timing windows are not a guarantee that every promotion posts on the same bill: Verizon says some credits can take 1–2 billing periods after receipt, while the cited AT&T offer says within three bills after completion. Keep in mind that the carrier’s receipt, acceptance and the start of credits may be separate milestones.

A promised trade-in that has not been completed

Check the submission deadline and the steps needed to complete the trade. For one AT&T offer listed when its terms were accessed in 2026, the customer must have an eligible smartphone on a qualifying installment agreement, maintain qualifying postpaid service and trade in within 30 days of activation. Those conditions apply to that offer, not to every AT&T promotion. Its credits begin within three bills after trade-in completion. Read the cited AT&T offer terms and compare them with the offer in your own account.

That 30-day window is a deadline in the cited offer, not a general grace period for trade-ins. If you are still within a promised return window, determine exactly what action completes the trade and whether cancelling first could affect eligibility. Do not treat a trade-in commitment as completed just because you bought the new phone or received a shipping kit.

An early-upgrade turn-in

An early-upgrade turn-in is not the same as an ordinary trade-in for promotional credits. AT&T’s installment agreement describes a Next Up Anytime option under which a customer with an active feature and an agreement in good standing must make a required payment and return the device in good physical and functional condition within the designated period. If the turn-in succeeds, AT&T says it will pay off or settle the outstanding installment balance. Cancelling the add-on forfeits that turn-in option and requires remaining installment charges to be paid. This is a distinct program; do not assume a regular trade-in or cancellation will settle a device balance in the same way. See AT&T’s installment agreement, section 17.

Can you keep paying after cancelling?

Do not assume you can continue paying a phone in installments after ending service. Ask the carrier whether your specific agreement permits it, whether you must make a request before cancellation, and whether there is a deadline. Save the answer in an account message or other record. If cancellation has already happened, contact the carrier promptly: some exceptions are time-limited and promotion-specific.

T-Mobile says results vary by promotion and EIP start date. Its offer-details page says customers who have already cancelled must call within 60 days to request continued installments for certain eligible EIPs. That exception does not apply to every customer or promotion. Verizon’s stated option to continue the balance over time applies to Missouri customers; it should not be generalized to other states. T-Mobile’s offer details and Verizon’s FAQ describe these limited cases.

T-Mobile’s own wording urges customers to contact it before cancelling to find out whether payments can continue or credits will stop and the full remaining balance will be due. Its 60-day request window is for certain eligible EIPs only; it is not a universal right to keep financing after service ends. If you have already cancelled, do not assume the exception applies—call and ask about your specific EIP and its start date.

Does paying off the iPhone unlock it?

Paying off the installment balance and unlocking the phone are separate steps. A paid balance may be relevant to eligibility, but do not assume the phone will unlock immediately or automatically. Ask your current carrier to confirm the device’s status and its applicable unlock requirements, then request an unlock before relying on the iPhone with another service.

T-Mobile’s 2026 offer-details page says: “If your device is paid in full and has been used for 40 day or more on our network, you may request an unlock when you contact us to cancel.” That is T-Mobile’s published criterion and wording; it is not a universal unlocking rule. Check the conditions that apply to your carrier and device at the time you switch. T-Mobile’s offer-details page.

Ask for the actual unlock status, not only whether the device appears eligible. If you plan to move the iPhone to a new carrier, build the request and confirmation into your switching plan; a payoff by itself does not establish that unlocking is complete.

How to check the real cost before switching

  1. Find the exact device payoff. Check your account for the remaining installment balance, and ask whether cancelling your line makes it due immediately.
  2. Identify the promotion. Record the offer ID, remaining credit schedule, qualifying-plan requirements and cancellation terms. Calculate the credits you would forfeit, not just the monthly cost difference between carriers.
  3. Check the trade-in status. Confirm whether the old phone was received and accepted, whether credits have begun, and whether a promised trade-in deadline remains.
  4. Check for a turn-in program. If you have an early-upgrade feature, ask whether turning in the iPhone under that program would settle the balance, and confirm its condition and timing requirements.
  5. Ask whether payments can continue after cancellation. Confirm whether you need to request this before cancelling and whether a deadline applies. Keep the carrier’s response.
  6. Confirm unlock eligibility separately. Ask whether the iPhone is paid off, eligible for unlocking and actually unlocked before depending on it with another carrier.
  7. Review the final bill. Check for the device payoff, stopped credits and any separately applicable plan-discount chargeback. Verizon distinguishes device-promotion credits from commitment-plan discounts in its FAQ.

For a useful comparison, write down what happens in each category: whether the balance accelerates, whether promotional credits stop, whether payments can continue after cancellation, whether a trade-in or turn-in deadline is pending, and what unlock conditions remain. This keeps a plan-price comparison from hiding costs or steps tied to the iPhone.

Why the exact offer matters

Carrier policies are not interchangeable, and a broad summary can miss an offer-specific exception or deadline. An installment start date, qualifying plan, offer ID, account status and state may change the outcome. The examples above describe the cited carrier pages checked on October 13, 2026; your signed agreement and the terms attached to your account are the documents to verify before making a decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no population-wide figure in these carrier terms for how much customers typically owe or how often credits are lost. Your relevant amount is account-specific: the unpaid device balance plus any future credits you would forfeit, adjusted for any payment continuation or turn-in option you actually qualify for.

Also distinguish phone-promotion credits from other discounts or charges on the account. Verizon’s FAQ treats device-promotion credits and commitment-plan discounts separately, so review the final bill for each applicable line item rather than assuming that all prior loyalty discounts are part of the phone payoff. Ask the carrier what a listed chargeback or discount adjustment refers to if it is unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I leave my carrier, will I still owe on my iPhone?

You may. Cancelling service does not erase the installment agreement, and some carrier terms make the remaining device balance due when service ends. Check your specific agreement and ask whether the payoff accelerates or whether installments may continue.

Will I lose my remaining trade-in credits if I cancel my line?

Often, future promotional credits stop when the qualifying service ends, but the exact result depends on your offer. Check the promotion ID, remaining credit schedule, plan requirements and cancellation terms before switching.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep paying my iPhone after cancelling service?

Do not assume so. Ask your carrier before cancelling whether your agreement permits continued payments and whether you need to request it by a deadline. T-Mobile’s published continuation exception applies only to certain eligible EIPs; it says customers who already cancelled must call within 60 days to request it.

Does paying off my iPhone automatically unlock it?

No. Payoff and unlocking are separate checks. Ask your carrier whether the device is eligible and actually unlocked before relying on it with a new service. T-Mobile’s cited 2026 page, for example, describes a paid-in-full device used on its network for 40 days or more as eligible to request an unlock when contacting the company to cancel.

What if my trade-in credits have not appeared yet?

Confirm the carrier received and processed the trade-in and check the timing in your offer. Verizon says some credits take 1–2 billing periods after receipt; the cited AT&T offer says credits begin within three bills after trade-in completion. Those are offer-specific timing examples, not universal guarantees.

Does an early-upgrade turn-in pay off the phone?

Only if the specific program’s conditions are met. AT&T’s Next Up Anytime terms describe a separate turn-in option requiring an active feature, an agreement in good standing, a required payment and a timely return in good physical and functional condition. Do not assume an ordinary trade-in has the same payoff effect.

The Bottom Line

Before you leave, get the payoff, remaining credits, trade-in status, payment-continuation terms and unlock status confirmed for your exact iPhone and offer. Cancellation can stop credits and make the balance due, but account terms and limited exceptions vary. Save the carrier’s response and review the final bill.
