For an Indian mutual-fund SIP, pausing or cancelling changes only future scheduled purchases. Units already allotted remain in your folio; they are sold only when you submit a separate redemption or switch request. The practical effects depend on how the SIP was registered, the scheme’s rules, and whether the units have any lock-in.
What a SIP instruction actually controls
In this article, “SIP” means an Indian mutual-fund Systematic Investment Plan. The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) defines it as a method of investing a fixed amount in a mutual-fund scheme at fixed intervals instead of making one lump-sum investment.

Each successful instalment normally results in units being allotted at the applicable net asset value (NAV). The SIP registration is a standing instruction to attempt those future purchases. The units created by earlier instalments are recorded separately in your mutual-fund folio. Changing the instruction does not erase that transaction history.
| Action | Effect on future instalments | Effect on units already allotted | Is a redemption request needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pause | Scheduled purchases are suspended for an approved period. | Units remain invested and continue to be valued at the scheme’s NAV. | No, unless you also want to withdraw money. |
| Cancel | The standing SIP instruction is stopped, subject to the route’s cut-off and confirmation process. | Units remain in the folio. | No, unless you separately instruct a sale. |
| Redeem | Does not by itself change whether a future SIP is active. | Specified units are sold and removed from the folio. | Yes. Redemption is the sale instruction. |
| Switch out | Does not automatically cancel a future SIP. | Units are exchanged for units of another scheme according to the switch terms. | A switch request, rather than a cash redemption, is required. |
Consequently, stopping contributions does not lock in a profit or prevent a loss. The remaining units continue to rise or fall with the scheme’s investments and market conditions.

Pause and cancel are different decisions
A pause is temporary
A pause asks the responsible provider to skip instalments for a defined period and then, where the facility allows it, resume the original SIP. The permitted pause length, number of pauses, eligible frequency, notice period and restart behavior are not uniform across India. Some facilities restart automatically; others may require a fresh instruction or may not be available for the route through which you registered.
Because a pause leaves the original instruction alive, check the first instalment that will be attempted after the pause. A pause that ends before your cash-flow problem does can create an unexpected debit.
A cancellation ends the standing instruction
Cancellation is the appropriate instruction when you do not want the scheduled purchases to restart. It does not mean “sell everything.” Existing units stay invested until you submit redemption or switch instructions for them.

An AMC or registrar may control the SIP record, while a bank, exchange or investment platform controls the electronic mandate. Ask the provider that registered the instruction which component must be cancelled and obtain confirmation for both where applicable.

Why there is no single India-wide pause rule
Official scheme documents illustrate how much the terms can differ. They are examples of the named schemes’ procedures, not guarantees for every fund or platform. Read the current terms attached to your own folio before relying on a deadline.
| Document example | Notice stated in the document | Eligible frequency or route | Maximum pause described | Restart wording |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SBI Mutual Fund scheme document | Request received 15 days before the next SIP date | Several frequencies; availability excludes SIPs registered through some outside platforms | Up to one year | SIP restarts after the pause; multiple mandates may require separate forms |
| Another scheme document | At least 30 calendar days before the instalment | Monthly or quarterly SIPs through specified routes | Three consecutive monthly instalments or one quarterly instalment | Original SIP resumes after the permitted pause |
| Mirae Asset Mutual Fund additional information | At least 10 days before the next instalment | Monthly SIP only | Three or six instalments | Automatic restart is described |
See the documents for their full conditions: SBI Mutual Fund scheme document, the separate scheme pause document and Mirae Asset Mutual Fund additional information. A platform’s interface may also impose its own submission cut-off even when the scheme document permits a request.
How to cancel a SIP without leaving a debit running
The exact screens differ, but the control path follows the system that registered the instruction. Use this sequence rather than simply allowing instalments to fail.
- Identify the registration source. Check your SIP confirmation, account statement or mandate details. Determine whether the instruction is held by the AMC or registrar, a bank, an exchange, or an investment platform.
- Find the next scheduled date and cut-off. A request submitted after the provider’s cut-off may not stop the immediately upcoming instalment. Keep enough balance available until you receive confirmation that the debit will not be presented.
- Submit the cancellation through the controlling provider. Use the provider’s authenticated portal, form or service channel. If the SIP was created through an outside platform, that platform may be the only place that can amend its instruction.
- Handle the associated bank mandate. Ask whether the SIP cancellation also terminates the recurring debit mandate. If it does not, follow the bank or mandate provider’s separate cancellation process. Do not assume that deleting a platform entry revokes a bank authorization.
- Save written confirmation. Keep the request number, effective date and confirmation message. The record is useful if a debit is attempted after the stated effective date.
- Check the next statement and bank account. Verify that no further instalment was processed and that your folio still shows the units you intended to retain. If a debit occurs after confirmed cancellation, contact the provider promptly with the reference number.
If you only need a temporary break, use the pause facility instead of cancelling, but confirm its automatic restart date and the first instalment amount that will be attempted.
What happens when you want the money back?
To turn existing units into cash, submit a redemption request for the scheme and number of units (or amount) you want to sell. Cancelling the SIP is not a substitute for this instruction.
NAV and exit load determine the proceeds
AMFI describes the redemption price as the applicable NAV adjusted for an exit load when one applies. The relevant NAV depends on the transaction and the scheme’s rules; the load, if any, depends on the units’ holding period and the current scheme documents. There is no single exit-load percentage that applies to all mutual funds.
Before confirming a redemption, check the scheme’s current offer documents or factsheet for the applicable load, the valuation point used for your request, minimum redemption amount and any other conditions. The amount credited can therefore differ from the amount you originally invested and from the value displayed earlier in the day.

ELSS units have individual three-year lock-ins
Equity Linked Savings Scheme (ELSS) units cannot generally be redeemed until three years have elapsed from the allotment date of the respective units. AMFI investor education material states the three-year lock-in, and scheme wording applies it to each unit’s own allotment date.
A monthly ELSS SIP therefore creates a series of separate lock-in clocks. Cancelling future instalments stops new units from being purchased, but it does not shorten the remaining lock-in on units already allotted. Once an individual allotment reaches three years, that lot may become eligible for redemption subject to the scheme’s current process; later lots can remain locked longer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why letting instalments fail is a poor cancellation method
An unpaid instalment and a properly cancelled SIP are not the same event. AMFI describes circumstances in which repeated failed instalments are treated as a SIP being ceased or discontinued, but the practical effect depends on the actual provider, mandate and scheme records.
A failed debit may leave uncertainty about whether the SIP is still active, whether a later attempt will be made, and whether the bank mandate remains in force. It also gives you no written effective date. If you intend to stop the plan, submit an explicit pause or cancellation request and verify the result with the responsible provider.

How to choose between pausing, cancelling and redeeming
You expect a short-term cash-flow gap
Ask the AMC or platform whether a pause is available for your registration route. Compare the permitted pause period with the length of the gap, and set a reminder before the automatic restart. If the facility is unavailable or too short, cancel deliberately rather than relying on missed debits.
You no longer want this recurring purchase
Cancel the SIP, confirm the mandate status, and decide separately whether the existing units should remain invested. The cancellation decision does not require an immediate sale.
You need liquidity now
Submit a redemption for the amount or units required, then check NAV timing, exit load, settlement expectations and any lock-in. Cancelling the next instalment alone will not create cash.

Confirmation checklist
- Write down whether your intention is pause, cancel, redeem or switch.
- Record the SIP folio, instalment date and registration route.
- Check the provider’s notice period and cut-off before the next debit.
- Confirm whether a bank or electronic mandate needs a separate action.
- Save the acknowledgement and effective date.
- Review the next bank statement and mutual-fund account statement.
- For ELSS, list each allotment date before planning a redemption.
- For any redemption, verify current NAV rules, exit load and scheme-specific settlement timing.
Stopping a SIP is therefore an instruction-management decision, not an automatic liquidation of your investment. Your units, their market value and any scheme restrictions continue on their own terms until you separately transact on them.
