What Happens to Your Gear When You Fail or Abandon a Quest in ARC Raiders?

If you are eliminated or fail to extract in ARC Raiders, assume the gear and loot you carried into the raid are at risk. Equipment is lost on elimination except for items in Safe Pocket slots, and you keep items collected during a match only when you extract alive. Embark also warns that some quest progress may be lost when extraction fails. “Abandoning a quest” in the menu is a different action, and its consequences are not specified in the official guidance available here.

The short answer

ARC Raiders has several outcomes that players commonly call “failing” or “abandoning” a quest. They are not interchangeable:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Eliminated during a raid: carried equipment is lost, except for items placed in Safe Pocket slots.
  • Fail to extract: loot collected during that match is not secured, and Embark says quest progress bars show progress that may be lost.
  • Cancel or abandon an individual quest in a menu: the official material available does not explain whether progress, quest items or future availability are removed.
  • Complete an Expedition: this is a voluntary character reset that can remove far more than one quest’s progress, including levels, skills, inventory, workshop and crafting capabilities.

The practical rule is simple: do not enter a dangerous raid with equipment you cannot afford to lose unless it is protected by a Safe Pocket slot, and treat extraction as the point at which both loot and vulnerable in-raid progress become secure.

What happens when you are eliminated?

Carried equipment is lost except for Safe Pocket items

The ARC Raiders guide published through the Epic Games Store states that elimination costs all carried equipment except items stored in Safe Pocket slots. “Carried equipment” means the gear you brought into the match, not merely the quest rewards you hoped to collect. The Safe Pocket exception is specifically stated for equipment lost on elimination; it should not be treated as a universal guarantee that every quest item survives every type of failure.

That distinction matters when deciding what to equip. A weapon, armor piece, consumable or other item outside the protected slots can be gone after an elimination. An item in a Safe Pocket is the stated exception, so use those slots for valuables whose loss would most damage your next run.

Items found during the match require a successful extraction

The same guide explains that you must make it out alive to keep items collected during the match. Finding an item does not make it yours permanently while you are still in the Rust Belt. Until extraction succeeds, it remains part of the raid’s risk.

This applies even if you collected the item while working on a quest. A quest-related object in your backpack is still exposed to the raid outcome unless a current game rule specifically places it in a protected slot. Do not assume that a quest label overrides the normal extraction requirement.

Can failing to extract erase quest progress?

Some progress may be lost

Embark’s Patch Notes 1.22.0 describe a change to quest tracking bars: “Progress bars now indicate what progress may be lost if you fail to extract.” The wording is deliberately qualified. It tells you that the bar can identify vulnerable progress, but it does not say that every quest resets completely after every failed extraction.

Read the progress indicator before committing to a fight or a long detour. If the bar marks progress that may be lost, a failed extraction can set that portion back. The official note does not establish a universal loss percentage, a fixed reset point or an identical rule for every quest type.

You can review the wording in the ARC Raiders Patch Notes 1.22.0. The page is hosted in Embark’s support center; the quoted sentence is the relevant rule for quest progress.

What “may be lost” means in practice

  • It is not a promise that all progress disappears.
  • It is not a promise that all progress is retained.
  • The progress bar is the game’s warning that the marked portion is exposed if extraction fails.
  • The available official explanation does not provide a single reset behavior for every quest or objective.

Therefore, avoid saying that “all quest progress always resets.” That claim goes beyond Embark’s wording. The accurate expectation is conditional loss, shown by the quest tracking interface.

Failed extraction, elimination and menu abandonment compared

Situation Gear and loot Quest progress What is established
Eliminated in a raid Carried equipment is lost except Safe Pocket items. The available guide and patch note do not define a separate progress reset for every quest. Explicit equipment rule from the official guide.
Fail to extract Items collected during the match are not kept because successful extraction is required. Progress identified by the tracking bar may be lost. Loot condition from the official guide; progress warning from Patch Notes 1.22.0.
Abandon or cancel a quest in a menu Not stated by the official material used here. Not stated; do not infer a reset, refund or deletion. Separate from failing a raid.
Complete an Expedition Inventory and other items are among the listed losses. Levels, skills, workshop and crafting capabilities can also reset. Voluntary character reset, not an ordinary quest failure.

What if “abandon” means cancelling the quest itself?

Players often use “abandon” to mean two different things. One meaning is giving up on the current raid or dying before extraction. The rules above cover that situation. The other meaning is selecting an Abandon, Cancel or similar command for an individual quest in a menu.

The official guidance available for this topic does not specify what happens after that menu action. It does not establish whether partially completed objectives are deleted, whether collected quest items remain in storage, whether the quest returns later, or whether the task can be accepted again. Those outcomes should not be guessed from the failed-extraction rules.

If you are looking at a cancellation prompt, read its exact text and consider recording the current objective state before confirming. A menu cancellation is a quest-management action; it is not evidence that your entire carried loadout will be destroyed, nor is it evidence that the quest will be safely paused.

How to reduce the risk before entering a raid

Use Safe Pocket slots deliberately

Because the explicit elimination exception is tied to Safe Pocket slots, place the most costly or difficult-to-replace essentials there when the interface allows it. The protection described by the guide is for items in those slots, so do not assume that an item elsewhere receives the same treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check which quest progress is exposed

Open the quest tracker and inspect the progress bars before you leave. Patch Notes 1.22.0 say the bars indicate what progress may be lost if you fail to extract. That warning is more useful than treating every objective as equally safe or equally fragile.

Separate “found” from “secured”

During a run, keep two mental inventories: what you brought in and what you found. Brought-in equipment is subject to the elimination rule; newly collected items remain unsecured until you extract alive. This prevents the common mistake of taking a valuable quest item and then assuming the objective is effectively complete before reaching an extraction point.

What to do after losing equipment

Use a free loadout

Nexon’s official ARC Raiders gameplay FAQ recommends using a free loadout after you lose equipment. This is a way to get back into the game without immediately risking another valuable set of gear. The FAQ presents it as a recovery option, not as a restoration of the equipment lost in the previous raid.

Use Scrappy

The same FAQ also points to Scrappy, an in-game companion described as collecting items. Scrappy can help you rebuild supplies after a bad run, but the guidance does not say that it returns the exact weapons, armor or loot lost on elimination. Think of it as a way to gather resources again, not an automatic insurance claim.

The recovery recommendation appears in Nexon’s official ARC Raiders gameplay FAQ. It does not state a special refund process for quest progress or a guarantee that a lost loadout can be recreated immediately.

Do not confuse a failed quest with an Expedition reset

An Expedition is a separate, voluntary system. Embark’s “Expedition Project,” published October 9, 2025, describes it as a character reset that follows completion of a separate project. Completing the reset can remove:

  • Character levels
  • Skills
  • Items and inventory
  • Workshop progress
  • Crafting capabilities

Those losses are much broader than losing one raid’s carried equipment or vulnerable quest progress. An Expedition should therefore be treated as an opt-in progression decision, not as the automatic punishment for abandoning a normal quest.

Virgil, ARC Raiders’ design director, explained the intent: “Players who have less time to dedicate to the game don’t have their progress reset outside of their control.” The full explanation is in Embark’s Expedition Project article. Its voluntary nature is the key difference from an unexpected elimination.

Practical decision guide

  1. You are still in the raid: treat all newly collected loot as unsecured and prioritize reaching extraction alive.
  2. You are deciding what to carry: put the most important protected items in Safe Pocket slots, because that is the stated exception to equipment loss on elimination.
  3. The quest tracker shows a warning: assume the marked progress may be lost if you fail to extract, as Patch Notes 1.22.0 explains.
  4. You have been eliminated: expect non-Safe-Pocket carried equipment to be gone; use a free loadout or Scrappy to rebuild rather than expecting an automatic refund.
  5. You see an Abandon or Cancel button for a quest: do not assume the raid-loss rules answer what that button does. The consequences of menu-level cancellation are not established in the official information cited here.
  6. You are considering an Expedition: read it as a voluntary character reset with losses that can include levels, skills, inventory, workshop and crafting capabilities.

Examples of the different outcomes

You find a quest item but die before extraction

The item was collected during the match, so the guide’s successful-extraction condition applies. You should not count it as secured merely because it entered your backpack. Your carried equipment is also at risk, apart from Safe Pocket items.

You extract successfully after making partial quest progress

Extraction preserves the items collected during that match. The patch note does not say that every quest bar fills automatically, so extraction protects the raid outcome without turning partial progress into completed progress.

You abandon a quest from the menu while in the hub

The available official material does not say whether the objective, its items or its future availability changes. Do not apply the elimination exception or the failed-extraction warning to this menu action without a specific in-game explanation.

You complete an Expedition project

This is the broad reset case. The listed losses can reach beyond one loadout or one quest and include character development, inventory, workshop and crafting systems. It is not an accidental raid failure.

Bottom line for a raid decision

When the choice is between pushing deeper and extracting, assume that extraction is the point at which your collected loot is secured and that the quest tracker’s flagged progress is vulnerable before then. Safe Pocket items are the stated protection against equipment loss on elimination. After a loss, a free loadout or Scrappy can help you restart, but neither is described as restoring the exact gear you lost. Treat a menu-level quest cancellation as an unresolved, separate mechanic, and treat an Expedition as an explicitly voluntary character reset rather than a normal quest penalty.
