In most cases, a temporary sign-in problem does not automatically erase your purchases. Start with Sony’s account-recovery process or PlayStation Support. In Sony’s US terms, digital Store purchases are personal licenses tied to the account used to buy them—not a library that automatically transfers to a new account. Suspension and account termination are different situations and can have more serious consequences.

What happens to your games and purchases depends on why you cannot sign in

“Lost access” can mean a forgotten password, a compromised account, a suspension, or a terminated account. Those situations do not have the same outcome. Sony’s recovery and terms information cited here is for the United States; terms and remedies may differ by country or region.

Situation	What it means for access
Temporary sign-in problem	Sony provides account recovery and support routes. A temporary lockout does not, by itself, mean purchases have been deleted. See Sony’s account-recovery page and sign-in troubleshooting.
Account suspension	You may be unable to sign in or use PlayStation features, including the Store; some products or services, even paid ones, may be unavailable while the suspension lasts. This is not the same as account termination. See Sony’s suspension guidance.
Console suspension	The suspended console cannot access PSN with any account or access Store-purchased content on that device. This does not establish that your account itself has been terminated. See Sony’s suspension guidance.
Account termination	Sony says termination ends PSN access and can make account information and content that depend on PSN unavailable. Its US terms describe termination as irreversible and do not generally promise refunds for account-linked items or unused wallet balance except where required by law or the agreement. See the March 2025 US terms.
Third-party account closed or unlinked	Some third-party-published games rely on a linked publisher account. Closing or unlinking that account may affect access to the particular product; it is not a universal rule for every PlayStation purchase. See the March 2025 US terms.

Why digital purchases do not automatically move to a new account

Sony’s March 2025 US terms say that ordering PlayStation Store content grants a personal license for private, non-commercial use. The content is accessed through the account used for the order, and the license is not transferable unless applicable law says otherwise. As Sony puts it, “If you delete or close your Account, you may lose access to and use of any purchased Content.”

That means creating a new PSN account should not be treated as a way to inherit the old account’s digital library, wallet balance, or purchase history. If the account is merely inaccessible, pursue recovery before assuming the content is lost. If it has been terminated, Sony’s US terms do not promise that the account or its purchases can be restored.

How to try to recover your account

Open How to recover your account for PlayStation. Sony says, “If you’re unable to access your account for PlayStation, you can recover your account online.”
Use the route that matches your sign-in setup. If you use a passkey, follow the passkey recovery route. If you can access the email address associated with the account, use Sony’s account-recovery flow.
Contact Sony if self-service is not possible. If you no longer have access to the account email, cannot provide verification information, forgot your sign-in ID, or see account details changed without permission, use the Online Assistant or PlayStation Support. Sony’s sign-in troubleshooting page also directs users to support for account-access problems.
After recovery, secure the account. Follow the security guidance linked from Sony’s recovery page, especially if you suspect someone else changed account details.

If Sony says the account or console is suspended

Check Sony’s suspension notice and account status, then use the support or appeal route that applies to the case. Sony says an account suspension can prevent sign-in and access to PlayStation features, including the Store; some paid products or services may also be unavailable during the suspension. A console suspension is different: the restriction applies to that console, which cannot access PSN using any account.

If the suspension relates to a reversed payment, use Sony’s account-debt support flow. Sony says a payment reversal can restrict access to online services. Where a debt is owed, repayment can restore access, but the result depends on the reason for the restriction and the individual case.

Avoid chargebacks as a recovery shortcut

A payment reversal is not an account-recovery method. Sony warns that reversing a PlayStation Store payment can lead to an account restriction, and a restriction related to an unpaid debt may remain until the debt is repaid. If you believe a charge is incorrect, use the applicable Sony support process rather than treating a chargeback as a way to regain access.

Do not assume recovery, transfer to another account, or a refund is available; check the terms and support options for your region and circumstances.
