If you lose your Switch but can still sign in to the Nintendo Account that bought your games, you can sign in on a replacement console and download them again. If you lose access to the purchasing account, recover that account: Nintendo says digital purchases cannot be transferred to another Nintendo Account. Game downloads and save files are separate, so getting a game back does not necessarily restore your progress. Nintendo’s North American support instructions cover redownloading games when the original console is unavailable.
What happens to my digital Switch games if I lose access to my Nintendo Account?
A digital game is associated with the Nintendo Account that purchased it. Losing a console and losing access to that account are different problems: a missing console does not, by itself, erase the purchase, but losing the purchasing account can prevent you from using its library. Nintendo’s published policy is explicit: “It’s not possible to transfer digital purchases from one Nintendo Account to another.” The policy applies to digital games and DLC, so creating a new account is not a way to move the old library.

For a lost or unavailable console, Nintendo says you can log in to the purchasing account on a new console and download the games. If you cannot sign in, the practical priority is account recovery—not buying a replacement console, memory card, or software utility. Those cannot reassign a Nintendo eShop license. These instructions draw on Nintendo Support’s North American English pages; account procedures can vary by region, so use the support site for your country when following recovery or transfer steps.
First identify which problem you have
- The old console is missing, but you can sign in: Sign in on a replacement Switch or Switch 2 with the account that made the purchases, then download the games. Nintendo’s console transfer and download guidance addresses a situation where the original system is unavailable.
- You have a console, but cannot sign in: Use Nintendo’s sign-in recovery steps for the specific missing credential or contact support if you cannot access the account email or identify the account. Recovery is not the same as transferring purchases.
- You requested account deletion or deactivation: Check whether the 30-day reactivation period is still open. After it passes, Nintendo says the account and associated licenses or funds cannot be restored.
- You can sign in and redownload a game, but your progress is missing: Check whether the game had a supported Save Data Cloud backup or whether a direct save transfer is possible. A game license does not contain a copy of every save.
How to download your games on a replacement console
- Use the Nintendo Account that bought the games. Sign in to that account on the replacement console. If the old Switch is unavailable, Nintendo says you can still log in on the new system and download your digital games. Switch 2 transfer guidance also directs users to sign in to the account on the new console. See Nintendo’s Switch instructions and its Switch 2 transfer guidance.
- Open the console’s digital game library or Nintendo eShop download area. Find the purchased game associated with the signed-in account and choose the download option shown on the console. The exact interface can differ between Switch and Switch 2 and may change with system updates; follow the current on-screen instructions.
- Let the download finish, then open the game. Redownloading restores access to the game software, subject to the account and console settings in effect. It does not automatically bring over a save that was never backed up or transferred.
- If the old console was lost or stolen, secure the account. Nintendo’s regional transfer guidance recommends changing the account password when the old console is missing. Review the instructions for your region, especially if you suspect someone else could access the device. Nintendo Switch 2 transfer instructions are one relevant North American support page.
Signing in on a new system does not make the purchase belong to a different person or a different account. The account that bought the game remains the key to its digital license.

If you cannot sign in, recover the purchasing account
Start with the credential you have forgotten. Nintendo’s North American sign-in information guide distinguishes between recovering a password, finding account details, and situations that require support.
You forgot the password
If you know the account email and can open that inbox, use Nintendo’s account sign-in process to request a temporary sign-in link and reset the password. Then sign in with the purchasing account on the new console. Keep control of the email account as well: access to the inbox is part of the recovery route described by Nintendo.

You forgot the account email or sign-in ID
If you can still use a console where the account is signed in, Nintendo says User Settings may show partial email details. Its guide notes that the full address can be checked through the console when you know the account password. If you cannot find the address or sign-in ID using the available console information, Nintendo directs you to contact support rather than offering a way to move the game purchases to another account.

You no longer have access to the email inbox
Nintendo directs users who cannot access their account email to contact support. The support route is a request for help identifying or recovering the account, not a guarantee that Nintendo can verify ownership or restore access in every case. Have the details Nintendo requests available and explain that you need access to the account holding the purchases. Do not assume a new account can inherit them.

You think someone else accessed the account
Nintendo’s account recovery guidance recommends changing the password, signing out of devices, checking linked payment methods, and securing linked accounts as well as the email account. Take those steps through Nintendo’s current instructions. If the mailbox itself may be compromised, secure it too; otherwise someone may continue to use the account’s recovery path.
Deleted or deactivated accounts have a 30-day deadline
A forgotten password, temporary lockout, and account deletion are not the same thing. Nintendo says a deactivated account can be reactivated within 30 days. If that window has passed, the account is permanently deleted and Nintendo says it cannot restore the account or associated licenses or funds. Read Nintendo’s account deletion and deactivation guidance before deciding what to do.

If deletion is pending and the 30-day period has not ended, use Nintendo’s reactivation instructions promptly. If more than 30 days have elapsed, do not expect ordinary sign-in recovery or a support request to recreate the deleted account’s game licenses. This deadline concerns deletion or deactivation; it does not mean that a person who simply forgot a password has only 30 days to recover access.

Nintendo’s current Switch and Switch 2 FAQ describes access through virtual game cards and Online License settings. It says virtual game cards can be played on up to two consoles when loaded, or on any console when Online License is enabled, subject to Nintendo’s settings and usage rules. Other users can play virtual game cards loaded on the console they use. See the current Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 FAQ for the relevant settings and rules.

That console-level access is not a transfer of ownership. A family member or other user may be able to play a loaded virtual game card under the applicable setup, but the purchase remains tied to the Nintendo Account that bought it. Do not rely on older “primary console” explanations alone: Nintendo’s current FAQ discusses virtual game cards and Online License, and the exact options depend on the system and its settings. Check the menus and current support information for the consoles involved.
Game downloads and save files are separate
Downloading a purchased game gets the software back on the console; it does not guarantee that the latest save will be there. Nintendo says Save Data Cloud backups can be downloaded on another system while the Nintendo Switch Online membership is active, but cloud backup is limited to supported games. An active membership cannot recreate a save that was never backed up. Nintendo also describes direct save-data transfer between consoles; that route depends on having the systems available and following the applicable transfer process. Nintendo’s transfer guidance and its Switch and Switch 2 FAQ cover these distinctions.
Before assuming progress is gone, check the save options for the particular game and whether a cloud backup exists for the account. Game-by-game support can differ, so do not assume every title supports cloud saves. If the original console is still available, a direct transfer may be another option; if it is gone and there is no eligible backup, redownloading the game alone will not recover the missing progress.
Would a physical game card prevent this problem?
For a future purchase, a physical edition can be an alternative if the specific game is sold on a game card. Nintendo says physical games can be played on any console. That makes the cartridge itself less dependent on access to the Nintendo Account that bought a digital copy, but it is not a recovery method for an existing digital purchase.
A game card does not replace a digital license, transfer a purchase between accounts, or preserve save data. Save handling remains a separate issue. Check that the title actually has a physical edition in your region before choosing that format; availability is title-specific. Nintendo’s format and console FAQ discusses physical games alongside current Switch and Switch 2 access rules.
Quick Recap
What to do next
- If you still control the purchasing account, sign in on the replacement console and download the games.
- If you have lost a credential, follow the relevant sign-in recovery route; if the email is unavailable or the account cannot be identified, contact Nintendo Support for account recovery assistance.
- If the account was deleted, check whether the 30-day reactivation period is still open.
- If your main concern is progress, check the individual game’s save support and any existing cloud backup or direct transfer option.
