If a service removes a movie or song you bought digitally, you may lose the ability to stream or redownload it there. A digital “purchase” is often access under that service’s terms, not an irrevocable promise of permanent availability. Your options depend on the provider’s policy, whether you downloaded the file, and the consumer-protection law where you live.
What “removed” means for a digital purchase
A title can disappear in several different ways. It may no longer appear in search, stop playing while already listed in your library, become unavailable only in your country, or remain visible but lose its download option. A subscription cancellation, rental expiry, account problem, or device-authorisation error can look similar, so identify the actual failure before assuming the provider has revoked a purchase.

Licensing is a common reason. A storefront or streaming service may have obtained distribution rights for a limited period or for selected territories. If the content owner changes or ends that licence, the service may no longer be allowed to stream or distribute the title. Provider terms commonly reserve the right to remove content in that situation.

Read the terms attached to the transaction rather than relying on the word on a button or receipt.

What major services say in their terms
The following policies illustrate why there is no single rule for every digital storefront. Terms can change, and the exact purchase route, country and edition matter.

These provisions are different. One service may emphasise downloads, another may disclaim liability, and another may describe a conditional refund or replacement. None establishes that all digital purchases on that service, or on every service, are permanently safe.
What to do when a movie or song disappears
Work through these steps before deleting apps, changing accounts or disputing a charge. Keep screenshots and receipts while the issue is being investigated.

- Confirm the transaction. Find the receipt, order number, purchase date and account used. Check whether you bought the title outright, rented it, or accessed it through a subscription. A subscription entitlement and an individual purchase follow different rules.
- Check the correct library and device. Sign in with the account shown on the receipt. Verify the device’s region, parental controls and authorisation status. Try the provider’s web library and its current app help page. Store catalogues and playback rights can vary by country.
- Distinguish a removal from a technical fault. Note the exact message: “unavailable,” “not currently available in your region,” “purchase missing,” or an authorisation error. Test another supported device only if doing so will not erase an existing offline copy.
- Read the applicable terms. Look for sections covering content-provider licences, redownloads, offline use, account closure, device limits, replacement and refunds. The terms in force on the purchase date may differ from the current version, so save both versions if you have them.
- Contact support with specific evidence. Give the title, edition or album, purchase date, account identifier, country and error message. Ask whether the restriction is temporary, territory-specific or permanent; whether a replacement edition is available; and what refund, credit or replacement process applies.
- Request the remedy in writing. Quote the relevant policy language without claiming that it overrides local law. Ask support to confirm the decision and any deadline. Preserve the case number, emails and screenshots if you later need to escalate.
- Escalate only after checking local rights. If the provider refuses a remedy, a consumer-protection agency, payment dispute process or qualified lawyer may explain the options in your jurisdiction. Do not assume that a chargeback is appropriate merely because a catalogue entry changed.
Downloads, offline playback and backups
Downloading is the most useful preventive measure when a service permits it, but “download” does not always mean an unrestricted file. Some downloads are encrypted, playable only in the provider’s app, tied to an account or device, or subject to periodic online authorisation. A local copy can therefore preserve practical access without becoming a portable, permanent archive.
Apple’s support guidance states: “Once downloaded, you can access content without an internet connection, and Apple can’t remove it from your device.” That is useful for eligible content already downloaded to a supported device. It is not a guarantee that every movie, television episode, book or music format can be downloaded, transferred or played indefinitely on every device.
Apple’s terms also advise downloading purchased media to a device in your possession and backing it up. An external hard drive can be useful for files the service actually permits you to download, provided the files remain usable with the required software and account. A drive cannot preserve streaming-only access, recover a title removed before you downloaded it, bypass digital-rights controls or make an incompatible format playable.

A sensible backup routine
- Download the highest-quality version the service officially offers while the title is available.
- Confirm that the download opens or plays in offline mode before relying on it.
- Keep the account credentials, purchase receipt and device-authorisation information in a secure place.
- Make a second backup on separate storage when the service and format allow ordinary file copying.
- Do not modify or redistribute protected files in ways prohibited by the service terms or local law.
- Periodically check that the app still recognises the device; some services require occasional authorisation even for offline playback.
How the legal position varies
There is no worldwide rule requiring a service to restore every removed digital title or refund every buyer. The contract, the wording presented at checkout, the reason for removal and the law where you live all matter. A provider’s statement that it may remove content is not automatically the final word on enforceability.

In the European Union, the Digital Content Directive establishes rules on conformity of digital content and services and sets a framework for consumer remedies. Its effect on a particular removal depends on national implementation and the facts, such as whether the content failed to conform, whether the trader supplied an update, and what remedy is proportionate. The directive should not be presented as an automatic refund guarantee for every disappearing film or song.
Elsewhere, statutory consumer guarantees, unfair-contract rules, payment-network procedures and ordinary contract law may produce different results. A short-lived licensing change, an account termination for breach, and a service shutdown are not necessarily treated alike. If the amount is significant or the provider has closed your account, obtain advice specific to your country rather than relying on a general internet summary.

Compare the transaction before you buy
The risk of losing access is easier to assess before checkout. Use these questions for a storefront, a subscription catalogue or physical media.

Physical media can avoid a particular platform’s licence and account dependency, but it has its own risks: discs can be damaged, players can fail, and some releases include region or format restrictions. The relevant comparison is not “digital versus physical” in the abstract; it is which form gives you a usable copy, a realistic backup path and remedies you understand.

The title vanished from search but remains in your library
Check the title’s detail page, region settings and download menu. A catalogue listing may have been withdrawn for new buyers while existing access remains, or the service may be experiencing a temporary rights or metadata issue. Do not delete an existing offline copy while asking support to investigate.

The title is listed but will not play
Record the error and test the provider’s supported offline mode. If the file was downloaded, keep the device unchanged and avoid reinstalling the app until support confirms that the download can be restored. Ask whether an authorisation refresh, replacement edition or refund applies.
You changed country or moved abroad
Availability and rights can change by region. Confirm the country attached to the account and the country in which the purchase was made. A title that is unavailable in one region may remain available in another, but changing region can itself affect library access and payment settings.
The provider closed or discontinued the service
Look for a shutdown notice, export or download window and the provider’s stated remedy. Download eligible purchases immediately if the service offers that option. If no download or replacement exists, preserve receipts and communications before seeking advice about local consumer remedies.
