Your digital car key may keep working for a limited time after a low-battery shutdown—but only on supported phones and vehicles, and only under the right settings. Apple says supported Apple Wallet car keys can work through Power Reserve for up to five hours; Google says some Android keys may work for a few hours. Neither duration is guaranteed for every phone or car. If the phone key fails, use the backup key or card intended for your vehicle.
What happens when the phone shuts down?
Some phones retain a restricted power reserve for digital-key functions after shutting down because of low battery. This is not the same as keeping the phone operational: the display and ordinary phone functions may be unavailable even while a supported key can still work. Whether it does depends on the phone, wallet setup, vehicle, and key configuration.

- Android: Google says you may still be able to unlock and start the car for a few hours after the phone battery powers down due to low battery. Google does not give a more precise duration on its help page. Google’s digital car key instructions.
These are platform-specific descriptions, not a universal reserve time. BMW, for example, says an iPhone with Express Mode enabled can lock, unlock, and start a BMW for up to five hours after the battery has run out; that is BMW’s stated condition for its own system, not a rule for other vehicles. - Try the vehicle’s documented low-battery method. On some supported setups, hold the phone near the driver’s door handle to unlock. A phone that no longer supports hands-free entry may need to be tapped or held at a specific point.
- Use the in-car key reader to start. Google’s instructions say to place the phone on the car’s key reader. Follow the location and sequence in the owner’s manual or automaker instructions; reader positions and procedures vary.
- If it does not work, switch to the vehicle’s backup. Use the physical key or fob, key card, or other fallback supplied or approved for that exact vehicle. Do not assume a card is included.
- Once you are in, charge the phone. A compatible, charged power bank can replenish the phone, but it is not a substitute for a vehicle key and cannot help if you do not have it or it has no charge.
Why a tap may work when hands-free entry does not
Digital keys can use different radio technologies and interactions. Depending on the phone and vehicle, normal operation may involve passive entry or proximity features such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Ultra Wideband (UWB). After a low-battery shutdown, the method still available may instead require NFC: tapping the phone at the door and then placing it on the in-car reader. For Android, Google specifies configuration requirements for low-power use: on vehicles with passive entry, passive entry must be enabled; on vehicles without passive entry, “verification required” must be turned off. Availability is limited to supported vehicles and markets. Google’s setup and management guidance.
What determines whether it works?
- Phone and operating system: The device must support the relevant reserve-key behavior, and the key must be set up in the compatible wallet or automaker system.
- Vehicle and market: Digital-key features vary by make, model year, trim, software, and country. A feature documented for one vehicle does not establish compatibility for another.
- Settings: Express Mode, passive-entry state, verification requirements, and manufacturer-specific options can affect low-power use. BMW’s up-to-five-hour statement, for example, specifically requires Express Mode on the iPhone.
- Backup equipment: Some vehicles offer a physical key, fob, or NFC card; what is included and how it works is vehicle-specific.
For setup and device compatibility, consult Apple’s instructions for adding a car key to Apple Wallet or the automaker’s guidance for your exact vehicle. Toyota Europe’s Smart Digital Key+ guide, for example, describes NFC use with a low or depleted phone battery when NFC Express Mode is enabled; that is a Toyota-system-specific instruction, not a general rule for digital keys. Set up a fallback before you need it
Check the owner’s manual or automaker support page for your precise make, model year, market, and digital-key system. Confirm whether the backup is a physical key, fob, or card, where it is stored, and how to use it. Cadillac says its key card, when equipped, can lock, unlock, and start the vehicle if the phone is out of battery; the “when equipped” qualification matters because not every car has that card. Test the approved fallback and any low-battery procedure while the phone is charged and you can still access the vehicle’s instructions. That way, you know what your particular setup supports rather than relying on a reserve duration or method documented for a different car.
