It does not automatically delete your chat history, erase account data, change every retention period, or remove information from models that were already trained. The exact result depends on the product, account type, setting, and exceptions in that provider’s policy.
What an AI-training opt-out actually changes
An opt-out is a restriction on one defined purpose: using eligible customer content to improve or train models. The setting normally applies prospectively to data covered by that product’s policy. It is not a universal “do not collect anything about me” switch.

Four separate questions determine what happens to your information:
- Training: Can the provider use prompts, responses, uploaded files, ratings, or other content for model improvement?
- Storage: Does the service keep conversations, logs, attachments, or account records after a session ends?
- Deletion: Has a chat, file, or account actually been deleted under the provider’s deletion process?
- Operational use: Can content still be processed for security, abuse prevention, support, legal compliance, or a requested feature?
Turning off training addresses the first question only. You must use separate history, deletion, retention, or account controls for the others. The documentation reviewed does not support a universal promise that an opt-out removes information from models trained before the change.

Training use and data storage are different
A conversation can remain in your account even when it is excluded from future model-improvement use. Conversely, a service may keep limited operational records after you delete a visible chat, for example to meet legal, security, or compliance obligations. The provider’s retention and deletion documentation controls those details, not the training toggle.
What may still happen after an opt-out
- Your existing conversations may continue to appear in chat history until you delete them using the product’s history controls.
- Information may be processed to deliver the feature you requested, such as generating an answer, synchronizing an account, or handling a support request.
- Safety, abuse, fraud, or security systems may inspect content under separate rules.
- Feedback actions, connected applications, and temporary-chat modes may have their own data-use terms.
- Records required for legal, billing, or compliance purposes may follow a different retention schedule.
For that reason, “not used for training” is narrower than “not stored,” “not reviewed,” or “deleted.” Read the wording attached to the exact product and control you use.
Why your account and product type matter
Consumer assistants, business workspaces, education editions, and developer APIs can have different defaults. A paid subscription or a business label alone does not establish a particular privacy result; the relevant plan terms and settings do.

How to opt out in ChatGPT
Personal ChatGPT accounts
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI also documents a privacy-portal option labeled Do not train on my content. Use the route that matches the account you manage and confirm that the setting is saved. This preference concerns model improvement; it is not a deletion request.
Deleting conversations separately
If you want a conversation removed, use ChatGPT’s chat-history deletion controls or the applicable account-deletion process. Do not assume that switching off training retroactively removes chats, files, or other stored records. Check the current deletion and retention terms for the product, because operational or legally required records can be handled separately.

Business, Enterprise, Edu, API, and Codex
OpenAI states that ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API inputs and outputs are excluded from model training by default. That is a product default rather than a statement that no data is retained or processed for other purposes. Codex adds an Include environments control, so decide separately whether full environment context may be included in training. Do not combine these controls with the personal ChatGPT toggle as though they were one account-wide setting.
How Anthropic separates Claude controls
Consumer Claude
Anthropic’s consumer Privacy Center guidance covers Claude Free, Pro, and Max. It states that Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if the main Model Improvement setting is enabled. Incognito is therefore a conversation-level choice with a defined training benefit; it is not a blanket statement about all chats, account history, or other records.

For ordinary consumer conversations, read the current Model Improvement setting and the consumer privacy terms together. The setting’s scope tells you which future content is eligible for improvement; it does not by itself specify deletion timing.
Claude API and commercial use
Anthropic’s API documentation says retained API data is not used for model training without express permission. The same documentation describes different retention arrangements for Anthropic services, cloud-provider platforms, and compliance-related records. An API customer should therefore evaluate the contract and platform path actually in use rather than rely on consumer Claude guidance.
What Google’s Gemini API documentation does—and does not—show
The documented Google controls in this comparison apply to the Gemini API, not the consumer Gemini app. Developer documentation describes choices about logging requests and responses and contributing datasets for product improvement and training. A developer must review project-level logging and data-sharing choices before sending sensitive content.

Zero-data-retention treatment
Google describes approved projects in which user content and identifiable metadata are cleared before logging. That treatment has exceptions. In particular, Search grounding prompts, contextual information, and generated output may be stored for 30 days for grounding and search-suggestion purposes under the current Gemini API documentation accessed in 2026.
“Zero data retention” therefore does not mean that every feature has no temporary storage. It also should not be presented as evidence about the consumer Gemini app, whose activity and training controls require separate documentation.
Exceptions that can survive a training opt-out
Providers commonly describe limited uses that are not the same as voluntary model improvement. The exact list differs by product, but you should look for these categories:
- Safety and abuse review: Content may be checked to detect attacks, fraud, policy violations, or threats to the service.
- Human review: A provider may reserve review of selected material for safety, support, or quality operations under its terms.
- Feedback: Clicking a thumbs-up, thumbs-down, report, or sending written feedback can create a separate submission with its own handling rules.
- Connected tools: Search, file stores, code repositories, and other integrations can receive information needed to perform the requested action.
- Legal and compliance records: A deletion or retention request may not override records that must be preserved under law, contract, or an organization’s compliance program.
- Grounding and temporary processing: A feature can retain prompts, context, or outputs for a limited period even when a broader zero-retention or training setting applies.
These exceptions do not prove that a provider will use your content to train a model. They show why a training preference cannot be treated as a complete data-disposal instruction.
What happens to chats sent before you opted out?
The safe interpretation is prospective unless the provider explicitly promises more. A newly disabled training setting tells the service how to treat covered content going forward; it does not establish that earlier conversations are removed from history, deleted from internal systems, or unlearned from models.

No universal retroactive-unlearning guarantee is established by the provider policies considered here. If older content is sensitive, take the separate actions available to you:
- Delete the relevant conversations, files, or account using the provider’s documented deletion controls.
- Review connected services and revoke permissions or remove imported data where the integration provides that option.
- Submit a privacy or deletion request if the normal interface does not cover the record you need removed.
- For a company or school account, ask the administrator which retention, legal-hold, and audit rules apply.
Deletion can reduce stored copies without changing the behavior of a model that has already learned from earlier data. Only a provider’s specific documentation can establish whether any additional remediation is offered.

1. Identify the exact service
Record the product name, account type, workspace, API platform, and any connected tools. “The company’s AI” is too broad to identify the applicable rule.
2. Read the control’s scope
Look for whether the setting covers prompts, responses, uploaded files, feedback, and future submissions. Check whether it is account-wide, workspace-wide, or limited to one conversation.

3. Check storage and deletion separately
Find the history, retention, export, and deletion documentation. Confirm what disappears from the interface, what may remain in backups or compliance records, and whether deleting a chat also removes attachments.
4. Review feature exceptions
Search for safety review, abuse monitoring, human review, search grounding, temporary chats, and connected applications. A setting can be effective within its stated scope while those functions follow different rules.
5. Verify the result
After changing a preference, confirm the saved state and note the date. In an organization, ask an administrator to verify the workspace policy rather than assuming a personal setting controls company data.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Mistake: treating opt-out as account deletion. Use the separate deletion workflow when removal is the goal.
- Mistake: applying consumer rules to an API. API retention, logging, and training terms can be different, even under the same brand.
- Mistake: assuming paid means excluded. Check the named plan and its terms; payment alone is not a privacy guarantee.
- Mistake: overlooking feedback. A rating or report may be handled under a separate pathway.
- Mistake: reading zero retention literally. Feature-specific exceptions, such as Gemini API Search grounding’s 30-day period, can still apply.
- Mistake: promising unlearning. Unless the provider documents retroactive removal from trained models, describe the opt-out as a future-use restriction only.
What you can reliably conclude
Opting out is useful when your goal is to stop a defined category of future content from being used for model improvement. It is not a single switch for collection, storage, deletion, safety processing, or connected tools. ChatGPT personal users have a documented Data Controls path; OpenAI’s business and API products have different defaults; Claude offers a specific Incognito treatment for consumer chats and separate API terms; and the Google evidence described here is limited to Gemini API behavior, including a documented 30-day Search-grounding exception under approved zero-data-retention arrangements.
