Your Character.AI chats are not guaranteed to survive a sale or shutdown. Character.AI is operating during a voluntary Chapter 11 case announced on October 12, 2026. The company says the platform remains available and that it is seeking a court-supervised sale, but also warns that the platform will be wound down if no suitable bid is available. No buyer has promised to preserve every conversation, user-created character, memory, or the same chatbot behavior. Request an account-data export now, keep a local copy, and manually save the conversations and character details you cannot replace.
Character.AI is still operating, but shutdown is an explicit contingency
Character.AI has not shut down as of October 18, 2026. In its October 12 announcement about a voluntary Chapter 11 case and court-supervised sale, the company said: “The Character.ai platform remains up and running, and you can continue to access all services at this time.” It also stated: “If such a bid is unavailable, however, the platform will be wound down.”

The company expects the sale process to finish by the end of November or early December 2026. That is an expected timetable, not a guaranteed closing date, and no confirmed shutdown date has been announced. A Chapter 11 filing or a sale does not itself decide what happens to individual chat histories. Those outcomes depend on the eventual transaction, court orders, technical operations and any later decision to discontinue the service.

A buyer may receive business data without promising a live-chat experience
A purchaser could acquire or license parts of the company’s technology, accounts, databases and intellectual property. That possibility does not create a promise that your existing conversations will remain visible, searchable or playable in the same interface. The current official FAQ says users can delete their account or export their data, but it does not promise that a buyer will preserve all conversations, user-created characters, memories or interactive behavior.

The reported Disney proposal illustrates why headlines need careful reading: Tom’s Guide described it as a $20 million, non-exclusive, perpetual license to certain Character.AI intellectual property. That report does not establish that Disney would acquire the app, assume the user database or preserve the existing chatbot community. A license for selected intellectual property is different from an acquisition of the service and its operating infrastructure.
Your characters may not behave the same even if text is retained
Character definitions, greetings, memories, moderation settings and model behavior can be stored or processed separately. A new owner could retain text while changing models, safety systems, context limits or account features. Therefore, a preserved transcript would not necessarily reproduce the same responses or relationship history when you reopen a character.
Privacy protections continue under the current operator
Character.AI says in its October 12 announcement that “Your information continues to be protected under our Privacy Policy, and our data privacy and security practices are unchanged.” That describes the current period; it is not a guarantee that a future owner will provide identical policies or retain the same controls. Read any future sale or service notices for changes affecting retention, transfers, account access or deletion.

What a shutdown could mean
Access could end even if you never delete your account
If the platform is wound down, the website and app may eventually stop accepting logins or serving conversation history. The company has not published a final cutoff date, retention period or post-shutdown download window. Do not assume that an account left untouched will remain available for later retrieval.
Exporting later may be impossible
Character.AI’s download guide, updated October 8, 2026, says an export can take 3–4 weeks to process. The email download link is valid for only 7 days after it is issued. Because that processing window is long compared with the expected sale timetable, waiting for a shutdown notice creates a real risk that your request will still be pending when access changes.
Copies are preservation, not automatic migration
An export gives you a copy of account data; it does not guarantee that another chatbot can import it. Character.AI has not announced a universal migration format or a tool that recreates characters, memories and conversation state on another service. Treat the download as an archive you control, then adapt material manually if you choose to use a different chatbot.

- Sign in to Character.AI in a web browser.
- Open Profile.
- Select Profile Settings.
- Open Account.
- Choose Manage Account & Data.
- Select Export Data and submit the request.
In the mobile app
- Open the app and tap Profile.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Legal & Privacy.
- Tap Export Data and submit the request.
Plan for the processing and download windows
Character.AI says exports may take 3–4 weeks to process. When the export is ready, the service sends an email containing a download link that remains valid for 7 days. Check the email address on your account, watch spam and quarantine folders, and download the file promptly. Store one copy on your computer or an encrypted external drive and a second copy in a separate location. Do not rely on the email link as your only backup.

If an important chat is missing or unreadable, preserve it manually while the live service still works.
Manually save irreplaceable chats and characters
Use manual copies for stories, role-play sessions, research notes or character setups that would be difficult to recreate. While logged in:

- Copy the full conversation into a text document, including dates or turn order when those help you follow the story.
- Save the character’s name, description, greeting, example dialogue, persona instructions, scenario notes and any memory details you can view.
- Capture screenshots when formatting, images or interface context matters, but keep a selectable-text copy as well.
- Record the account or character URL only as a convenience; a link will not work if the service closes.
- Label files clearly and keep separate copies so one damaged drive does not erase your archive.
Remove private information from any copy you plan to share. Chat logs can contain names, contact details, health information, location data or other sensitive material that you did not intend to publish.
Which preservation method should you use?

The safest approach is layered: submit the export request, manually copy irreplaceable material now, and keep using the service only as a temporary source while those backups are prepared.

Can you move Character.AI conversations to another chatbot?
You can reuse text, character descriptions and story outlines elsewhere, but there is no stated one-click transfer that preserves the original conversation state. Another service may use different prompt fields, context limits, memory systems, moderation rules or models. A long transcript may need to be shortened or divided into chapters, and a character’s greeting and persona may need to be rewritten for the destination’s format.

Before uploading an archive to another provider, read that provider’s privacy and retention terms. Character.AI’s privacy summary, updated October 29, 2025, says the service collects information supplied at account creation and data generated through interactions, including usage data and IP address. It says information may be used to operate, improve and personalize services, including improving AI models, customer support, security and legal compliance. Moving those records creates a new disclosure of the people and subjects mentioned in your chats.
Subscriptions and billing during the sale process
Character.AI’s October 12 announcement says subscriptions remain active and billing is unchanged for now. The company intends to notify subscribers in advance if changes affect paid features. That is a statement about the current period, not a promise that a subscription will continue after a sale or shutdown.
If you no longer want the service, cancel through the same app store or payment channel you used to subscribe and keep the cancellation confirmation. If you keep the subscription, monitor official account notices and your payment statements for changes. Do not assume that continued billing proves the service will remain available for the full period you paid for.
Your privacy and data-rights options
Depending on your location, Character.AI’s privacy summary says you may be able to request access, correction, deletion, objection or restriction, and portability. Privacy questions can be sent to [email protected]. These rights apply to requests under the current policy and applicable regional law; they do not guarantee that a future owner will preserve the live chatbot experience.
If you submit a rights request, describe the account information or conversations involved, use the account email where appropriate, and keep a copy of your request and any response. A deletion request may conflict with your desire to preserve chats, so export or manually copy material first if you want an archive.
A practical timeline for protecting your chats
Today
- Submit the export request through the web or mobile path above.
- Confirm that your account email can receive the delivery message.
- List the characters and conversations that would be hardest to recreate.
While the service remains available
- Manually save those priority chats, character descriptions, greetings and memory notes.
- Keep local and separate backup copies, and protect them if they contain sensitive information.
- Check official announcements for changes to access, billing, privacy or the sale timetable.
When the export email arrives
- Download it within the seven-day link window.
- Open the files and verify that they are readable and contain the material you expected.
- Store the archive separately from your working copy.
Common assumptions that can leave you unprotected
- “A buyer must keep all user chats.” No buyer has made that promise, and a transaction can involve selected assets rather than the complete service.
- “A shutdown date will be announced well in advance.” No confirmed date or guaranteed post-shutdown download period has been published.
- “The export will recreate my characters elsewhere.” It is a data copy, not a guaranteed migration or behavior-preserving import.
- “A saved browser link is a backup.” The link depends on the service and your account remaining online.
- “My subscription means access is guaranteed.” Billing is unchanged for now, while future paid-feature changes remain possible.
Bottom line
Character.AI is operating during Chapter 11, but the company has stated that it will wind down the platform if a suitable sale cannot be completed. Because no buyer has guaranteed preservation of chats, characters or interactive behavior, request the official export immediately, manually copy irreplaceable material, and keep your own verified backups. That is the only way to control what you still have if access changes.
